  1. A stat from the podcast. Of the guys drafted in the top 5 in the last 10 years who played college basketball Jabari Smith landed DEAD LAST by a significant margin in 2pt FG%. He shot 43.5% from 2. No other player shot below 45% and only 6 or 7 guys shot below 50% from 2pt range and most of those guys below 50% were PGs like Khris Dunn, Trae Young, Deangelo Russell, Cade Cunningham to name a few. Forwards just don't typically shoot this low a FG% around the basket. The 2pt FG% correlates to an ease of scoring for a player and leads to easy assist. Even guys who weren't known as scorers in college like Scottie Barnes or Franz Wagner, or even Evan Mobley all shot exceptionally well (56.1, 56.3, & 61.5 respectively) from 2pt range. For comparison in this year's draft Chet Holmgren shot 73.7% and Paolo shot 52.5% from 2pt range. Mind you, my criticism of Jabari is mostly about his struggles as a shot/playmaker (ie the best player on the team) and whether these struggles are too much for him to be the considered for the top pick in the draft. Now Jabari's skillset as a deep shooter and defender definitely mean that he'll excel in the right role, but I have trouble seeing him as the best player in this year's draft because of this particular flaw. Go back and watch Auburn's loss to MIami. Now Auburns guards are admittedly trash, but Jabari absolutely refused to attack his defender off the dribble. The best player in a given year's draft needs to have the potential to be an offensive hub as a player and I don't see it in Jabari.
  2. I'm highly skeptical of Jabari Smith's star potential in the league. I admit he's a great 3pt shooter, but I'm not exactly sure he'll be much more than a starting level stretch 4 or a 3 and D type player. Jonathan Tjarks mentioned awhile back on one of his podcast that a big predictor of elite level play in the NBA is 2pt FG% in college. And for being a big Jabari Smith shoots a woeful 43.5% on 2pt FGs. That's absolutely abysmal for a big. For comparison 6'4" guard, Jaden Ivey shoots 53.1% on 2pt FGs. Smith's anemic 2pt FG% is instructive of his mindset, particularly his lack of aggression and his willingness to settle. In other words he may be too soft to grow into an elite player, but who knows.
  3. That's how I watched the 4th qtr of our first trip to the Rose Bowl vs Michigan. At some point during the game I noticed something good would happened every I was out of my seat. By the end of the 3rd quarter I decided I had to sacrifice myself to get the win.
  4. I doubt Paul saw what happened. He's probably reacting to whatever his family relayed to him. So to say he's overreacting isn't taking into account that his family probably amplified whatever they endured.
  5. While I'm willing to give the new front office a try I agree with @Porterhouse that Cuban is the fly in the ointment. His meddling has been part of why the Mavs have had such atrocious luck with the draft over the last 20+ years.
  6. The resulting lack of structure is a function of the fact that we're unwilling to admit what this actually is. There's a tension that is created in still pretending this is an amateur endeavor while simultaneously running a professional operation and it leaves us in a quandary where we're left without adequate rules in place to curtail this new world from being the wild wild west. Paying the athletes as employees destroys the myth all of us are holding on to, but paying them as employees also means they'd be beholden to contracts and other controlling mechanisms available with employer/employee relationships.
  7. Yeah, but he doesn't provide near the defensive quality we need from a guy getting minutes like he would require.
  8. The Mavs are basically a quality rim running defensive center and a Cam Johnson like wing away from having a championship caliber roster. Finney and Bullock are great, but if we had one more wing of their defensive quality but more capable of consistently attacking closeouts it would throw us over the top. Maybe if Green had a Finney-Smith like improvement from outside over the next year he'd fill that hole in our roster, but so far choosing him over Saddiq Bey was a major mistake.
  9. The NBA needs to get rid of the breakaway fouls teams constantly commit.
  10. Yeah it's obvious they're saving Luka's legs. He's taken on an overwhelming load so far this series. I thought way too much was made of Booker and Paul hunting Luka at the end of the game. It was clear that their success had a lot more to do with Luka being fatigued as opposed to him being a poor defensive player. A significant number of those 50 possessions against Luka happened in the first half and they didn't have nearly the same level of success when he had his legs.
  11. Luka began almost every possession in the high post to start the game as opposed to initiating the offense from the wing. In fact most of his offensive work today has been in the post.
  12. Powell has allowed us to get 2 offensive rebounds early in this game.
  13. Had the NCAA not dragged their feet on this issue and now totally abdicated any responsibility towards creating a suitable structure this could've been a boon for college basketball in keeping stars in school longer. Imagine if NIL was around for the Fab 5.
  14. The guy who actually came up with the draft pick valuation chart was a Petroleum engineer from the university of Arkansas. I forgot his name, but "It's Just Banter" discussed him on a recent podcast episode.
  15. Cowboys haven't traded a player that returned a top 3 round draft pick since the Hershel Walker trade. They're the only team in the league to go even a decade with this sort of drought. Conversely they've traded for a number of players over this time period for 1st round picks. You'd think that an owner would take the lessons learned from the most successful period of his ownership and utilize those tools again, but Jerry has taken that lesson and done the exact opposite.
  16. We have a shitload of crawfish for $5s a lb at Catty Corner for anyone in the area. It's a fundraiser for Sinclair elementary and we ordered way too much.

  19. His real life brother, Steve Harris, is playing Magic's business manager on the show, Dr. Day.
