The coup thread. Fuck the traitors to the Constitution.
In the article that I read regarding her death, her friend mentioned a long standing health issue. I realize these are the days where skepticism is the rule and not unfounded to have that as a benchmark, but it may be that her death was for wholly natural reasons.

Do people really still use baby oil instead of sunblock? RFK's going to block your mRNA therapy when the melanoma appears, although the 'beetus may strike first.

Transgender man tortured for 30 days then killed
*Observations Upon A Springtime Walk Tethered to each hand a child The sun is soft, the air is mild. Walking to the park ahead Upon the left a high voice said, 'Fire ants, I see the mound!' Pointing to the object found. 'And over there's a butterfly,' Continued the child's excited cry. A tug on the right as progress halted And a louder voice exalted 'Stop, stop I needs a stick, To poke the mound, oh where's a brick!?' *From Personalities and Peculiarities: A Poem. The Kids (Aren't) Alright - World Happiness Report
Yeah, I was thinking about that. The young progressive women on the healthcare chart replying affirmative to the question is IMO because any halfway intelligent woman with any type of health condition mental OR physical has a ten times great chance of actually RECEIVING care is if she's progressive. In addition, in some areas, sitting in the exam room and listening to a condescending evangelical doctor about certain issues may lead to an on-the-spot diagnosis of mental illness due to possessing the need to roll one's eyes repeatedly. Or, one could consider the very conservative husband in our city who is sitting in jail this week because he tried to kill his wife. She is the sweetest person and would likely tell everyone how happy she was...because her very life depended upon it. I hope that mf doesn't make bail.

Um, you know that's not real, right? That was first on social media about 3 years ago and the screenshot/article is from a satire site.

Covid/Influenza/Black Death. 2024 and beyond
Measles has a somewhat long incubation period: 10-14 days. There were some promising reports of people lining up to get vaccinated, but lately, the misinformation seems to have taken hold. Next week's update (post spring break for many children) will give an idea of how it's going.

Covid/Influenza/Black Death. 2024 and beyond
Latest numbers from Texas Health & Human Services: 309 cases of measles. Lubbock had been mostly keeping the virus at bay but now has 8 cases, perhaps due to the Lubbock hospital where many children are being treated, which increases exposure risk to others. Gaines County still the leader with 211 cases. In addition, there are ~18 states with cases for a total of 378 nationwide. However, the CDC does not have Oklahoma listed as one of the states, and their health officials have reported several cases so I guess the Oklahoma govt doesn't even bother with sending in data to the feds that, I don't know, might be useful to others. That's no surprise though, their newborn screening lab is/was messed up.

Running Alt-Right Thread of Mockery and Hypocrisy
And the most obtuse thought process ever award goes to Minnesota Senate Minority Leader, GOP member Mark Johnson from Grand Forks for this quote from the article: "if you’re accused with a felony, I think that’s serious enough — our law has distinguished that as a very serious crime." Gee, wonder who else he knows with a felony record....

So my kiddo got accepted to UC Santa Barbara
My oldest was at UCSB for a summer STEM internship funded by an academic fellowship and had a wonderful experience. Perhaps not the same as enrolling and attending (oldest at a different uni for undergrad), but had a lot of compliments for the facilities (labs, etc) and the overall vibe of the place. IOW, there to study and focus but also having a lot of options to de-stress was a plus.

Trump’s America
It's vandalism and there are already laws that handle that within each state. In Texas depending upon the damage, it can be a first degree felony with lengthy prison time and a fine. The GOP frequently uses the 'already laws on the books' excuse, then so can everyone else.

Covid/Influenza/Black Death. 2024 and beyond
Well, I am rather happy that smallpox has been eradicated, because the RFK method of letting disease run rampant so as to prune a species of its weaker members seems to portend a grim future for more than just our avian friends.

Jay Hartzell is not out standard
If the proposed SB 37 I posted about Saturday in the Destruction of Public Education thread gets passed in the lege, banning drag shows at UT and elsewhere is going to seem tame. They're going after curricula, profs, etc in that one.

Covid/Influenza/Black Death. 2024 and beyond
State health officials report from Tuesday: 279 cases. Upon further investigation, the two vaccinated cases from this outbreak received the vaccine just prior to getting the measles (1-2 days before symptoms started) and therefore likely within the infection window as their immune systems had not the opportunity to build immunity. (According to Texas DHHS.)

Trump’s America
Rather sad when one thinks of the monuments men, you know the ones who risked their lives to repatriate art during WWII to save for future generations. Just as science surrounds us, so does and should art (and humor is part and parcel with that, no matter its form) and has been with us from the beginning. A constant disdain for that creative instinct which can both inspire and force us to reflect. The beacon and the mirror to societies for centuries and all for naught. Because, what one does not seek nor care to understand one will destroy. That is what I know when I observe that meme and the people who believe it to be funny.

Texas -- a failed state
To put it succinctly since I'm derailing the thread: money. Less succinctly, the way I understand it has to do with a messy convergence of private property rights, high vs. low fencing, canned hunts on large tracts of private land (where one can introduce those bred deer), and a general trend towards serfdom in rural areas wherein a few wealthy landowners (either individuals or corporate) own swaths of land and the remaining smaller outfits exist to provide services (plumbing, HVAC, etc). If one essentially creates a barrier wherein wildlife cannot escape, then it's been argued that the situation resembles the sheriff of Nottingham and the monarchy wherein the public no longer can access 'their' deer and it is the possessive 'their' that is the sticking point. Wild life as was mentioned were considered as belonging to the state, but some landowners having gone to the trouble of feeding them and whatnot, considered them 'theirs.' Thus when enterprising folks began breeding deer, it introduced a whole 'nother level of complications. Add CWD to the mix and the usual corrupt nature of Texas politics and here we are. (I didn't even get into the whole poaching and/or setting up blinds near fence lines type behaviors. I don't have a dog nor deer in this hunt, just things I've observed and if I'm off base, feel free to chime in)

The article said they were to visit friends. It's spring break for colleges, not just K-12, so they may have friends who also have a break.
