  1. Not near as many mid to upper 90s fastball guys as were anticipated. And I think LSUs guys like that were transfers. Ruger/Sanders - transfers. Not near as much power either.
  2. If you have the right horses relative to your competition, anything can work. And, if you can confuse the opponents D because they see it so infrequently, that can make a difference too. Liberty Hill is an example of this. I’m old enough to have been in a wing T offense then shortly after seen my high school transition to more open offenses. Then seeing the evolution since that time. I have a biased, personal preference of which offense I’d choose. And a key support of that is the number of QBs from Texas that have succeeded at higher levels. Thirty years ago Cam award is likely never heard from beyond high school. Obviously, the reasons run deeper than simply the offense, but that’s one reason.
  3. The right place at the right time is quite significant. For much of this Longhorn roster that is the case. I’m not sure there’s ever been a time when competition has been higher or profiles have been elevated more at Texas than now. And there are far more coaches that are able to bring you down than lift you to your maximum potential.
  4. Was it most prevalent in the 80s/90s in Texas? The time period in which few Texas high school QBs went on to be good college QBs and even fewer to the NFL. Some have said QB is the most important position. So, let’s run an offense that limits the QB. Just cause the Marlin Bulldogs ran roughshod over you with it does not mean it was a beautiful offense.
  5. What a terrible offense. His story kinda tells you that.
  6. I agree. The RPI needs retooling. Go on the road to beat Mizzou, and you get a quad 3 win. Nevermind they have been run ruled in 4 straight. 3 at home. One by a barely above .500 team. Half their SEC games have only lasted 7 innings. They have 3 quad 1-3 wins - UConn, Illinois and SIEU. Playing the #101 team at home is not equivalent to beating the last place SWAC team. Yet it is. At some point, games should be thrown out. That way there’s fewer reasons to cancel. If we’re weighing Tuesday/Wednesday games in the same manner you weigh weekends/conference games, that’s dumb. Using a metric for post season seeding that gives such an impact to pitchers you likely won’t see in the post season is not indicative of how the post season will play out. And all that bs leads to games being canceled.
  7. I am not sure I’ve ever said much about his talent being limited. Generally, I’m never going to limit what a player can do. He’s no different. When I say he has some uniqueness to him, that is not meant in a negative sense. But when one discusses actual production, that surrounding talent matters. My life experiences tell me that slow pass catchers make your margin for error much smaller. That any QB reads are more difficult because the defense remains condensed longer while at the same time creating less separation. If you add in a mediocre pass protecting unit, then these timeframes are condensed even more. And all this before you consider whether these pass catchers have above average to elite abilities to make defenders miss. That has not been a Texas issue of late. I’d say less so than any other team. Personally, I wouldn’t compare a G to a QB. Overall, in my opinion, our offense has underachieved relative to their talent the past 3 years. Allocate that however you like. It’s not one player or one factor.
  8. I’m not following you. Are you disputing my comments or just saying I’m a dumbass because I interjected the surrounding talent?
  9. Now that much of the gang is back I had to jump into the fray. 1. You are correct on the first part. You may be correct on the second. 2. This is a difficult one. Objectively, based on the PFF grading system, he was at best mediocre in 2 of 3 seasons and one better than mediocre but not likely elite. 3. OFEI says we were never a top 10 offense. Yet the past 2 drafts say we had the draftable talent of a top 5 offense both in overall offensive talent but also top end talent. With the advent and availability of advanced stats, passing stats don’t tell anywhere near the story. As referenced above, we have had/will have had tons of draftees the past two years. We had the fastest combine 40 WR of all time. We had the fastest pair of all time. Then followed that up the next year with the fastest WR 40 time and the fastest WR top-end speed. Three OTs drafted over the 2 years. Two TEs drafted - in back to back years. The highest drafted RB one year. Objectively, no other QB had access to that level of mature talent. No other Texas team can match that. And as for wins, the past two years our backups are undefeated in their starts. One of those QBs reportedly was asked to leave his new program so he’s not the second coming of Patrick Mahomes. Yet he won. As for Ewers it’s all in front of him. His experiences here have likely prepared him well for the next level. He has some uniqueness to his game. I’d bet he gets drafted higher than many expect - no later than round 2 is my bet. I’d put his chances of success at pretty solid. None of that changes his career here. As for many QBs, he needs that right environment.
  10. Warner is pretty level headed and has a unique experience. From what I gather, he doesn’t seem to place limits on a player which goes along with your point above about where they should get drafted and whether QBs are quality or a miserable failure waiting to happen. His comment about progressions is interesting. That can be a coaching flaw that may overrule a players instincts. You go here #1 then here’s #2, and here’s #3 rather than the defensive play call dictating your #1, at least how interpreted his comment. Much of what you see in a QB is more reflective of how they’ve been taught than what they can potentially do. That philosophy can help wrack up stats but may cause struggles when all things aren’t going as planned. Milroe still is relatively young. Certainly compared to Nix, Daniels, and Penix. I’d assume his QB upbringing up until college was less than ideal in the sense of developing him as a great passer. Then he had a new staff this year with quite a few new targets. And being a running QB changes the equation too. I’m not talking about the occasional scamper or keep em honest 3rd down keeper but a designated focal point of the rushing attack. One should not expect him to be refined at this point. I would be interested in Milroe starting in the 3rd round but not as a starter this year. I’d rather have him there than Shadeur in the last half of the 1st or 2nd. There’s probably something to lean on with guys who have a ton of collegiate starts because the processing part helps a great deal with the accuracy. I would lean more towards a Jalen Hurts comp than Anthony Richardson with the hope that the surrounding environment would support the QB as it does for Hurts. It will be interesting to see it play out.
  11. In 2021, we had Pete Hansen, Madden and Stevens as starters. Witt was a full time reliever with Cole then Nixon. There were several guys with good numbers like Southard and Gordon. In the end if the offense shows up, we beat MSU 2 of 3 instead of losing 2 of 3. If we win game 1, we shift that stress to MSU. In that final loss to MSU, we were one pitcher short. Stevens did not go deep in the UTenn game so Witt had to extend. That was Witts longest outing by 2.1 innings. Unfortunately, two games later he wasn’t as good. The final game was Cole’s longest of the year. The two games prior were Nixons most innings on back-to-back days all season. In the end, we extended our 3 bullpen guys beyond what they had done. If we had trusted 1 more guy, it may have made a difference.
  12. You can ‘yeah, but’ this to death. The truth is that any player will rarely reach top speed. They’ll also never start in a sprinter stance and run 40 yards straight. It’s interesting, to me anyway, that about 40 WRs ran the 40 at the combine but only a dozen did the shuttle and 3-cone drill. I’d say the combo of those 3 is more meaningful than a 40 alone yet few want to put that comparative data out there.
  13. Just to play along. Walkon versus scholarship. Offense versus defense. Tall versus short. Fast versus slow. The first two play a large part of factoring in Taaffe’s play. But defensively it is too easy to blame the nearest man on a defensive failure rather than one who is likely to be at fault which then evolves into he should never play, he’s too slow, too physically limited.
  14. Ewers got Golden career highs in catches, yards, TDs, and yards per catch. Oh, and helped him to College Football Playoff semi-final appearance.
  15. Pretty certain Bond had the second fastest top end speed. Thought Bond was 2nd behind the DB. I never said Bond was quicker to 40. Pretty sure dudes beat Usain Bolt to 30-40 yards too. Were they faster than him too?
  16. Coming in to this season, Golden had 76 catches and 13 TDs. Bond had 65 and 5. Golden now has 134 catches and 22 TDs and a season best 17.4 per catch. Bond is at 99, 9 and 15.9. Looking at numbers last year regarding Mitchell, there weren’t many high WR draft picks that didn’t compile over 100 catches. Golden was open quite a bit here from the getgo. There’s a good chance he was always better than Bond. People just didn’t identify because of their biases. Combine numbers reflect Bond is faster. That was assumed from the outset and hasn’t changed. Im not sure I’d take Golden in the 1st round, but there’s a lot to like about his game. And you can support it with production and individual highlights.
  17. I’ll do my best to not repeat this sin but no guarantees. Also to clarify, winning 2 of 3 in a series or a season against an SEC team doesn’t provide you a similar hosting privilege.
  18. I’m not disagreeing with the cumulative impact. The SEC is pretty damn insulated however. You only have to go back to 2023 and Auburn as an example. They lost 3 midweek games. The final 2 were cancelled. They also lost 2 of 3 to Southeastern Louisiana. They were 17-13 in conference. Throw in the tourney they were 18-15. Prior to the post season they won 8 straight then finished it off going 0-2 while hosting the regional. As a point of comparison, our midweek win % last year was 69% versus Auburns at 70%. And quick glance shows we played 2 back-to-back midweek games to their 1. Every year is different so certainly there are no absolutes. If you win 2/3rds of your SEC conference games, you’ll really have to shit yourself in non-conference to not host a regional. That win percentage probably puts you top 4 in the conference.
  19. From what I recall WSU had their #1 pitch in that game too.
  20. I have not paid much attention to rankings much historically but was a bit curious this weekend. Perfect Game rankings on a per player basis had us 3rd in 2024. From what I could tell this was post draft. We lost was it 3 to the draft? In 2023 we were 8th on a per player basis. We were 15th in 2022. For 2022, Tennessee, Florida State, Alabama and Kentucky recruited a lower quality player. We were in the ballpark. As of now, we’re at the top for 2025 and 2026. There’s no doubt NIL and the SEC matter. Using that top 15, there were around 8 non-ACC/SEC teams over the past 3 years. Maybe there’s a correlation with Allen. There is plenty of talent here. And quite a bit of it is experienced and mature. Sounds like lots of weird stuff behind the scenes but a lot of issues last year were injury related - Witt, Mercer, Shaw, Harrison, Santos (I’d like to know this guys story).
  21. Houston Christian is tied for 2nd in the Southland. The #5 RPI conference.
  22. If you’re referencing my post as one, I never said otherwise. But Shores missed all of last year and pitched very little the year prior. He gave up 3 in 3.2 innings versus Mizzou. Otherwise, he’s pitched against shitty teams. He’s likely not in prime form. Eyanson has an almost 9.00 ERA versus Nebraska and Mizzou. Came from UC-San Diego. Beck from UIW had a 14+ ERA at KSU in 23. It was 8.64 last year at UIW. Six appearances in two years. He’s not really a pitcher. Mayers at Nicholls regressed from year 1 to year 2. 76 walks in 70 last year against Nicholls level comp. Primeaux has 11 career innings. Benge had a 5.70 ERA at DBU. Walked 22 in 33 innings. 2 runs in 0.2 innings versus Mizzou. Rizy. Freshman from Mass. Struggled versus KSU. Ware. 2 years Juco. Era near 7. Schmidt. Freshman. 15 career innings. Evans looks different than all these others. Dad’s a coach. His stuff is top flight. Even his production this year has been better. Only 1 poor performance. They clearly trust him for at least 4 innings. Theyll rely on freshmen arms, guys with control issues or simply guys that haven’t done it at this level. They no doubt have many, talented options. Offensively, there’s not a ton of high level achievement at this level of competition. This weekend they were more disciplined than powerful. Outside of Jones, they’re looking at the Utah Valley and Indiana State transfers for some pop. Theyve clearly got lots of ability, but they may run into some issues with lack of clarity on who is the choice that day. It may take them awhile to lock down that starting rotation.
  23. The broadcast talked quite a bit today about getting the lead to your best arms. That’s how LSU failed yesterday. Those guys had live arms but have spent quite a bit of time against low level competition. A little Zane Morehouse-like before he learned to pitch. I am curious how their season plays out. Outside of buying Skenes they have not done much in the past 8 years or so. They finished sub-500 conference last year and lost in the regional. This year they have too much talent to tank, but their non-conference strength of schedule is in the 260s. That’s one level above SWAC level competition.
