  1. I don’t blame people either, which plays more to my point than any fear of us going on the road. It is not as anticipated as some other games. It just happens to be on the road, which will give UF some benefit particularly if they survive September. I’m thinking we come out well versus OSU and absolutely ready. Fans and players alike are thinking about that game. I was considering UF potentially more similar to Arkansas or Vandy last year. Those were not our best efforts from an intensity standpoint. But where it falls on the schedule is ideal. Also depending on how September goes, it could be UF that comes out flat. If their Oline and Baugh are firing, you don’t want to wake up midway thru the 1st and realize you have a game. I’ve been following your discussion on Lagway. His health certainly is impactful. No matter I’m on board for 12-0 and national championship.
  2. There is nothing in recent history to say there’s a good comparison. If you are attempting to say Michigan last year or Alabama the year prior are comparable, they really aren’t. They likely got substantial focus from Sark and crew during the off season. The OSU game is a better comp there. The UF game is not a prove a point game. Those were. Not to mention after those two games, we could screw around and still win - Rice, Wyoming, UTSA. This year we get OU after UF. Now, why might UF get less focus? Because they aren’t OSU or Georgia or OU or A&M. Because we beat the shit out of them last year. Even on this board, there is not tremendous anticipation about the game. Now South Austin was absolutely correct, and that’s the best argument. We play 3 lackluster games leading into UF with a bye. It’s the conference opener. We will likely be amped for that game. And as another poster said UF has a couple of more difficult games leading up to it so they likely aren’t focusing on us solely. Anyway, I’m on board just for different reasons.
  3. Sark at Texas? No. Any other time? Maybe, but I don’t have an example. We were 0-3 versus UGA and OSU last year. One for a championship. Another for a shot at a championship. One we open the season with a #1 vs #2 matchup. Both national champs in the past 5 years. That is unique that brings a certain amount of focus on those games. As brother Austin points out, SEC opener after some easy ones will help us be ready. You are right about that. That’s far better than if it were that MSU or Kentucky week. The bye before Georgia is a nice break too. UF is still relatively early too. So Fine, you win. Our depth will help us navigate the long season, but there’s likely a game or two where we are lackluster. That shouldn’t be a problem against a Kentucky. UF is one of the few teams offensively with the potential to hit us in the mouth. Even with focus, that could present some problems.
  4. Not in general but in the context of it’s a long season and you don’t always bring the same juice. I do believe OSU and UGA will get a higher intensity from us. Sure. We’ve also never had as many high profile road games in the same season. But the more important part is that UF has a chance to win some battles upfront and have some success offensively. Baugh is a bit of a load so long season, a little home crowd energy, and some offensive skill can make it a difficult matchup. But note, I never said we’d lose.
  5. This is my reason for them being the most difficult game on the schedule. Secondarily, it’s on the road and we might be apt to be less focused than for other games.
  6. I follow Horns football throughout the year, pretty religiously. Sometimes, I feel age and life beats me down so that maybe I’m not as excited about the upcoming year as I have been. So thanks to some of you for helping build the fire this year. The Oline. There’s no perceptible reason this can’t be a great one. As some have mentioned, there is reason to believe they improve as we progress. Yeah, only 1 returning starter, but 3 with starting experience. Hutson, Robertson, Neto have been together for going on 4 years. Goosby, Campbell, and Hutson have been in the fire. Are we any worse off at RT than we were a year ago? Now, reaching into the PFF bag yesterday, I see that our TEs both ranked in the 200s out of 200-something in their run grades. Obviously, they are an extension of the Oline. In my mind, they are very different and view them as different. From my recall there were several plays that failed due to those who are not Olinemen failing to get their block. I need some of you to focus on reality. We aren’t going to have 5 guys that kick ass. They certainly won’t kick ass equally at pass protection and run blocking. There are reasons the Bamas, the Ohio States, the Georgias have been dominant programs. Towards the very top of the list is that their D-lines do not get manhandled and more often than not they win their 1v1s. It’d also help if you realized that numbers matter too. Five won’t often block 6. And it may just be an occasion in which others miss their blocks or the ball carrier misses the hole. Thats the same as it’s always been, always will be. Here is the beauty of this. This unit doesn’t need to carry us. If we can win a championship 3-0, then they did enough. Personally, I think the offense does quite well and complements the team well.
  7. You’re thinking a guy that redshirted at Ball State then played 100 garbage snaps in year 2 will suddenly be ready for Bama? If he’s more ready than our freshmen, it’s likely not by much. Ourlads, which is likely not overly accurate, has him listed as 3rd team. He’s basically a Hail Mary that would push a more talented freshman down the depth chart. A guy willing to come in and sit 3rd team at OT is either very young, which I’d bet costs some cash, or is buried on the depth chart elsewhere, which means he’s not better than what we have. We had Goosby/Baker/Cojoe/Brooks. If anyone gets down to their 5th OT, they’re in trouble. And they’re likely considering moving pieces to get a G out there.
  8. You may be onto something here. It’s possible Hutson is the 3rd or 4th G. Sark has subbed at G more than anywhere else on the Oline the past two years albeit because that’s where we were inconsistent. It could be about Robertson at C and Hutson at G and what the hell, throw Neto at LT for a brief run. I can’t imagine that was the look for extended periods of practice. But Sark knows we’re whipping ass so maybe he’s less concerned about locking in reps at this moment.
  9. Where are you getting that info on air yards? Pro Football Reference? PFF tracks distance from the LOS. Behind the LOS, 1 to 9, 10 to 19, and 20+ are the categories. Over the 3 year period, QE was probably best relative to his peers behind the LOS. He was excellent in the 10-19 one year only. Injuries or whatever, he is a tough read with regards to consistency. It’s key for any QB but protection may be more important for him than many other QBs. The grading is relative to a standard. If he throws 5 passes right into defenders hands, but they dropped them that will only be an incompletion on the stat sheet but will result in a poor grade for that play. Completions to wide open guys on poorly placed balls can be great stat stuffers but not positive on a grading perspective. Check it down to an RB who houses it after causing 5 missed tackles will give the credit to the RB whereas they both get equal credit statistically.
  10. Yeah, I think we’re trying to hug it out but afraid of that initial embrace.
  11. To bring you down more, I would have whipped his ass at Baylor 97 when he wouldn’t let Ricky run right over them. We wanted to run wide rather than over them. Then on the last drive, we stopped giving it to him cause “you can’t give it to him every play.” You bastard. Now you’ve made me sad.
  12. No, I get your point. And, yes, I agree on the principle. I merely took exception to the example. Cause Priest was a non-factor in 05 and still recovering in 06. I do appreciate you brining it up as it made me look into it and test my recollection. I had forgotten Priest missed a year. I recall thinking after that UNC game that he was about to take off. I was arguing the example not the point. As we were arguing, I mean discussing, the ancillary points. Ultimately, we’re both big fans of Priest and Ricky. You think Shon sucks (I know you didn’t say/think that) whereas I don’t. I’m done with your doneness.
  13. When a dude averages 6.2 yards per carry on almost 200 carries, you cannot argue the production. Yes, that one year Ricky averaged more than that. Yet a year later, he averaged less. I do not believe Ricky was less of a player as a senior than a junior. I would argue that when you have a substantial number of carries and get about 6 yards per that any coaching decision is justifiable. It was not about Ricky’s ability. It’s about consistency within that ability. And in virtually every sport and every level, endurance and season long longevity are questions for freshmen/rookies. Ricky showed up. We had a TB. We didn’t have a fullback. The TB showed to be productive. How much was Ricky a true FB? The split backfield is relevant here for multiple reasons. Combining those factors and uncertainty as to whether he was ready for 250 carries is legitimate. Even if you think Ricky was infinitely better than Mitchell, the question remains was that pairing better than any other pairing? You are arguing against Mackovic getting the best players on the field even if not in their ideal spots.
  14. I understand where you’re coming from, but it is a condemnation of Mitchell. I do not disagree with the premise that a backup could be better. This not a good example of the second string being way better. Ricky as a freshman was not the same as Ricky as a junior or senior. I am one that believes an frosh can be productive but generally lacks in the intangibles relative to a more experienced player. And even on a per tote basis Michell’s 1995 was better than Ricky’s senior year. Based on Priests numbers and return from injury, it’s difficult to argue he was better than Shon at that time. Priest was awesome versus UNC then memorable versus Nebraska but otherwise somewhat pedestrian. I don’t necessarily blame that on him as he proved with the Chiefs that he could get it done. And in a big way. Priest is a great example of timing, needing an opportunity and then situationally being in the right fit. You could say NFL teams missed on him twice. I’m not arguing for it, but someone could argue that Priest was a better RB than Lewis yet backed him up. Ricky and Priest were pretty special at times with Ricky being more special at Texas and Priest more so in the pros. Shon if he were to come through now, he might be viewed differently in a positive way since his skills/frame are better suited to the open field game. As for talent, Priest/Ricky are up there. I might just add that’s a pretty talented and balanced threesome. Now as for Manning last year, I won’t buy others argument that he wasn’t ready or that he was less likely to get the job done. We don’t know that he wasn’t better suited than Ewers last year. We certainly saw glimpses that he could have been.
  15. Let’s hold on here a bit. Shon Mitchell was a very solid RB. In 1995, Priest was out and had a reduced role in 1996 due to blowing out his knee prior to that 95 season. Mitchell had a better statistical season in 95 than Priest ever did at Texas. In 95 Shon and Ricky were the starters. Ricky as a freshman FB. From what I recall we ran a fair amount of split back and maybe some single back with Ricky. Priest was out so we had our best two RBs on the field. If memory serves correctly, there really isn’t a difference between FB and TB in that look. Now in 96, Priest likely wasn’t back to form and both Mitchell and Williams were coming off good years and deserving of reps. If I remember correctly, Mitchell was dinged up some so that impacted his game. It was a bit of thunder and lightning, if you will. Mitchell was the only lightning of the bunch. * Just saw a note that Mitchell was on a state champion 4x100 relay team.
  16. It’s not a big deal but would like some clarity on the NASCAR package. I saw the write-up on OTF but didn’t clarify it. Here it says at least 3 Edge guys. On OTF, it showed last year having a 6th DB instead of s 2nd LB. They also drew up a theoretical with only 5 DBs. I had thought the 6th DB was part the package. Does it require the 6th DB?
  17. No hostility here either. Just talking football. I was too talented to ever play Oline. Just joking - sorta. But I do appreciate you guys. I don’t know the footwork aspect of the line so any aspect of that is appreciated. And I looked at it again and can’t determine jack. Robertson is blocking right although not really engaged. No one blocks Hill. It looks as though the DT is inside Stroh but can’t exactly tell which way he wants to take him because Gibsons desired path isn’t totally clear. You can only see 3-4 guys in the clip at a time. Caldwell, Robertson, Stroh and Gibson then Brevard and Hill so it looks like they’re going against the 1/1b defense. Probably crappy O across the board.
  18. Yes, he’s playing LG. Yes, it’s a handoff with Gibson going off Strohs right hip. It is not a wide angle shot so you can’t see much. The DT didn’t make the play on the RB and not sure he even negatively impacted him. My initial thought is that the block was effective even if ugly with the DT trying to cut backside rather than fight thru. But too many unknowns based on the limited view.
  19. Don’t run from expectations. Like it or not, we are one of the favorites to win it all this year. Ohio State and UGa lost more than we did. We are going to match up well with anybody and everybody. Sark, CDC, the NIL crew have built this for sustainability as far as us common folk can see.
  20. Gotcha. That probably is where it gets into the unknown.
  21. Makes sense. An era of system over function. As Wing T kid, I’ve grown to have a personal dislike for that offense. The halfback with his hand in the dirt. Too restrictive for vision and less explosive/quick to the hole, in my opinion. Nevermind are more restrictive QB run game. Is there anything in particular that stands out on the secondary? I don’t spend much time looking at the secondary but have found their matchups versus opponents curious a time or two. For example, I believe they tagged Hill on the Henderson screen for a TD. So probably more of what I’ve questioned would be matchups, which I’m not sure correlates to grading. I do not know that for certain.
  22. It’s still the preseason so let’s put the cart before the horse. I’m not crowning but merely polishing it ready for wear.
  23. Just out of curiosity, what was criminal about it? There are elements of the here and now college football world I don’t like, but it’s opened up the potential of the University of Texas. I’m going to say Sark ends it as the most accomplished football coach at Texas.
  24. FYI, I like the 12-0 thought. My biggest reservation is the difficulty getting up every week and a slip will occur somewhere along the line. I do think PFF is reasonably reliable. I’ve spent time trying to understand their approach and believe that to be reasonable. Their NFL work seems to be their bread and butter with a smaller pool of games so it’s likely better but would lean towards their CFB work as improving. Their processes are very similar between the NFL and college. It’s certainly not perfect but comparisons by position or stats should be pretty solid. Within that, you cannot remove all the subjectivity.
  25. I’d say the same for run blocking. Or the you’ve got 5/6 to block 7. The old toss for a 7 yard loss versus Ohio State. The two safeties made the play. We don’t have enough to block them.
