  4. Recruiting Vernon Broughton -- through a mother's eye ByDAMON SAYLES 46 minutes ago The correspondence never ceases. Multiple cellphone text messages and direct messages via social media come through in bunches from college coaches. It's the neverending lifestyle of a busy recruiting process. And that doesn't even touch what the actual recruit goes through. When a recruiting process becomes high-profile, few fans who follow the wanted high school target realize that the best college recruiters make the entire family -- and not just the player -- a priority. And the elite college recruiters know that the mother oftentimes has the last word, so recruiting her is equally vital. That said, Houston four-star defensive lineman Vernon Broughton's upcoming commitment is one to watch. He is ranked a national top-100 player and a national top-10 defensive tackle in the 2020 class for a reason. But every word and every action by Yolanda Wells-Broughton is key. The mother of the 6-foot-5, 286-pound Cy Ridge High School standout has been integral in his process as he inches closer to publicly announcing his verbal commitment. Entering the weekend, Broughton has a top five, in alphabetical order, of Arkansas, LSU, Ohio State, Texas and Texas A&M. Broughton hears from multiple coaches -- in and out of his top five -- on a daily basis, but he handles everything with maturity. It's almost to where his mother never has to worry. "It's really been a humbling experience, particularly if you knew his back story and where he comes from," his mother said. "You hear kids always saying how this has been a lifetime dream. Vernon didn't quite have that story. It's only been two years of Vernon playing football, so for him to have this opportunity, I'm just ecstatic for him." Broughton will eventually commit, potentially early next week, but all the coaches in his top five have done a solid job in recruiting Wells-Broughton, as well. And that's important because she's a former college basketball coach who knows all of the tricks of the trade with recruiting. Wells is a former head women's coach at Texas Southern. She also has been an assistant coach at LSU and TCU, among other places. Wells-Broughton played basketball at Grambling and helped the program earn its first-ever trip to the NCAA Tournament in 1994. If football coaches don't know her coaching and recruiting background, it could be detrimental in recruiting her son. It's tough for some to sell to a former salesman. Fortunately for Broughton's top-five programs, those coaches have been on top of their games in recruiting both him and his mother. Currently, it's the middle of the NCAA dead period, and Wells-Broughton said communication between her and coaches has slowed down significantly. Add in the fact that her son has been focused on finishing summer-school courses, and the conversations among coaches have been at a minimum. But when the open period returns, a routine day of communication for Broughton can get somewhat strenuous -- and just as hectic for his mother. "A typical day is him telling me, 'Hey, mom, you got a minute? Can you talk to this coach?'" she said. "He's one of those kids who watched me work as a former collegiate coach. He's juggling it and tries to answer every call, but he doesn't have the time to always get into detail." That's when Mom comes in. And because of what's she already knows, a football coach has no choice but to come correct. "Football coaches are pretty demanding, but at the same time, I think they know I won't be interested in a lot of hype. I want them to get to the substance of everything," she said. "How soon can Vernon graduate? When does he need to apply for school? What about application fees? That's our focus. "This is not a three-, four- or five-year decision; this is a 40- or 50-year decision. This is bigger than football, and when I talk to coaches, I don't want to hear the glitz and glamour. I'm not interested in pool parties or things of that nature. At end of day, you want him to maximize the opportunity. You've got to get more out of school than what the school is offering you." Wells-Broughton has something specific she likes about each school in her son's top five. Ohio State has a respected hospital specializing in orthopedics on campus. Arkansas has a staff with a lot of veteran coaches and a head coach in Chad Morris who, like Wells-Broughton, climbed the ladder and gradually moved up. She likes his foundation for building. LSU is Wells-Broughton's old stomping grounds, and she is a big fan of the strong support group there. Texas is a school that has done a good job in recruiting the entire family, and she feels the staff can maximize her son's potential. When discussing Texas A&M, Wells-Broughton spoke about how the staff took an interest in Broughton very early. She also knows that Jimbo Fisher is someone who knows how to turn programs around. My❤️ "They are one of the first teams that said this kid has a career in football," Wells-Broughton said of the Aggies. "He was playing AAU [basketball], we weren't even thinking about football, but Coach Robinson kept saying how he has a career in football. They would come to the school to watch him play basketball. Vernon would say, 'Mom, this is getting serious.'" Wells-Broughton added: "I know that having an Aggie Ring opens doors for people. I'm looking at graduation and what you're going to do after sports. How can we market you with an entrepreneurial and business aspect? There's no doubt in my mind, A&M can help him with that." A decision could come as early as next week for Broughton. Nothing, she said, will happen until his she returns to Texas. She is currently in Chicago and is expected to be back later this weekend. The winning school will get a playmaker with a high ceiling. With a decision coming, the process will see its slowdown not only for him but also for his mother. It's a process she said she'll never forget. "I just pray that Vernon will make the right decision," she said. "I know he has to make the decision, but Mom will have to approvespan widget

  9. National top-100 DT Broughton nearing decision VIP ByBRIAN PERRONI 50 minutes ago FRISCO, Texas – Houston Cy Ridge four-star defensive lineman Vernon Broughton was not with the rest of the prospects when they arrived at check-in for The Opening Finals on Sunday. The 6-foot-5, 286-pound defender had long had a family reunion planned for this past weekend, so he did not arrive in Frisco until Monday afternoon. The nation’s No. 70 overall prospect will hit the field on Tuesday but he is also focused on recruiting as well. Having taken his five allotted official visits over the past couple of months to Arkansas, LSU, Ohio State, Texas and Texas A&M, Broughton is nearing a decision. “Right now - I think…a week from now - me, my mom and my grandmother are going to go to a nice restaurant, bring a notebook and pencil and write down and see where I’m going,” he said of a timeline and figuring out his future destination. As for whether a particular school was standing out as he prepared for the meeting with the two main women in his life, Broughton was not quite ready to say that. “I mean, I have several, to be honest,” he said of schools sticking out. “But one? No, not really. That’s why we want to sit down, write it all out and see where I’m really focused at.” Broughton says he is looking for an environment that feels like home to him. “Every school is nice, so it’s really where I’m going to fit in at,” he said. “Living, see if I’m going to stay in Texas or not. That’s the majority things. And, a big family thing. I know every school shows that they love my family, but see where it’s really down.” A&M received the final official visit, hosting Broughton just before the dead period began last month. “It’s amazing. It’s nice,” he said of Aggieland. “The culture and everything is nice there. The college itself, the people – it’s a great place. Coach Price and coach Jimbo, they’re all good people. “I’ve been talking to coach Price here lately. We’re just going over things. He sent me a depth chart and everything else like that.” A couple weeks prior to his official visit, Broughton camped at A&M and then spent the night in College Station. He says it helped the Aggies in his mind quite a bit. “They have,” Broughton said about things picking up with A&M as of late. “They’ve been off for a minute but they got back on the wagon. “Still talking to coach Price. Letting him coach me at that camp and just walking around. I’ve been to Texas A&M plenty of times.” Broughton weighed in at 286 pounds this past March and is ranked as a defensive tackle by 247Sports. However, A&M is recruiting him as a defensive end. That is his preferred spot, but he is more open now to playing on the interior. “That’s a good question. I know I’m going to grow some more so [some] people are saying d-tackle,” Broughton said. “But I don’t care, to be honest. I just want to be on the field. That’s all I’ve got to say.” Broughton has narrowed things to the five schools where he took officials so it’s not surprising that he mentioned coaches from each program as the ones he communicates with the most. “There’s several,” he said. “Coach Giles from UT, coach Johnson from Ohio State, coach Price from Texas A&M. And I’m good with coach Morris from Arkansas. He and I are like cool friends. And coach DJ, the defensive line coach at LSU.” Broughton’s younger sister is a recruit in her own right as a basketball player. Whoever lands him could be getting both siblings. “She does want to follow me,” he said. “My mom wants us to stay close to each other. It could be a good chance (we go the same place
  10. King's recruitment a reminder that A&M will battle under Fisher ByDAMON SAYLES 57 minutes ago Share 8 Comments It's late Friday morning, and Longview, Texas, 4-star quarterback Haynes King is still uncommitted. Will he decide where he'll play college football by the end of Friday? Maybe in the afternoon or early evening? Or ... will he just wait until later in the summer? Cue the suspense music. 247Sports' Gabe Brooks and Charles Power, in addition to GigEm247, have been following King's moves of the past few hours thoroughly, and one thing remains to be consistent -- King's simply not ready to make a decision. He has four schools on his list -- Texas A&M, Tennessee, Auburn and Duke -- and all four could end up winning over the stud dual-threat quarterback. King's recruiting process in the last couple of weeks has been a booming national topic of discussion, as he is the nation's top-ranked uncommitted quarterback. The Elite 11 Finals will run today through Sunday in Frisco, Texas, and originally, he was supposed to have a decision made before check-in, which is set for around midday Friday. What have we learned from any of this? Big picture, it re-establishes Texas A&M as a regular contender for some of the nation's best talent, and it reminds Aggie recruiting fans of that. A slightly smaller picture, it reiterates just how good Jimbo Fisher and the coaching staff can be when they put on their full-court press in going after a prized target. A friendly reminder: King has 28 reported offers. According to his 247Sports profile page, Texas A&M was the second-to-last school to offer back on May 1. Only Purdue offered later, on May 14. Tennessee offered King back in January, and he took an unofficial visit to Knoxville in March. Duke offered King in April. Texas A&M may have come late to the party, but it managed to get one of four big dances, so to speak, in an official visit. King's first official was to College Station the weekend of May 31. He then officially visited Tennessee the following weekend and Auburn the weekend after that. Duke got a midweek official visit June 19-21. Credit Fisher, offensive coordinator Darrell Dickey and every other coach involved in King's process. The Aggies weren't a blip on the recruiting radar earlier in the spring. While at the Dallas stop of the Under Armour All-America Camp Series in February, King told GigEm247 that he, at the time, had not heard much from Texas A&M but was keeping all of his options open. King then added that in looking for a winning program, he wanted to be at a place where there is a "consistency of the coaching staff" and a place where he can develop as a quarterback. King also spoke about how he wanted to be at a degree where, academically, he could be set. And here we are today. Texas A&M can check all of King's boxes, as well as win the proximity argument against the other three schools. That said, Duke is an academically recognized institution who also just had a high first-round draft pick in quarterback Daniel Jones. Tennessee arguably has built the longest relationship with King, and Auburn just watched quarterback Jarrett Stidham get selected by the New England Patriots to potentially become the successor to Tom Brady. Still, King's recruitment brings back what Fisher said after the 2018 signing period. He spoke of how he expects to compete for a top-three finish every year with his recruiting classes. He and his staff would go after the biggest fish -- and land a few of them. For many Aggie recruiting fans, the results since then have been a refreshing site. Adding King to the 2020 class would be just another example of what Fisher spoke about. King is ranked the nation's No. 2 dual-threat quarterback and No. 32 player overall in the 2020 class by 247Sports. He threw for nearly 3,900 yards and 42 touchdowns, rushed for nearly 700 yards and eight touchdowns, showed that he can consistently run the 40-yard dash in 4.5 seconds and, back in December, led Longview High School to a UIL Class 6A Division II championship and an undefeated 16-0 record. King's a big fish, and Texas A&M is that close to having another success story for its recruiting class. Contrary to what the naysayers believe, that says something. As we all continue to tune in to the uber-suspenseful episode that has become King's recruitment, let the Texas A&M fan base be reminded of just how impactful this recruitment has become. Three months ago, King's best options to stay in Texas were with Baylor and TCU, which would have been solid places for him to develop under highly respected coaches in Matt Rhule and Gary Patterson, respectively. But Texas A&M has shown once again that it can up its recruiting game under Fisher -- and the Aggies hope to ultimately close the deal soon on one of the country's most coveted targets
  11. 5-star Demas has confidence in himself and A&M recruiting VIP By BRIAN PERRONI When Tomball five-star wide receiver Demond Demas committed to Texas A&M back in September of his junior year, there were a lot of people at the time that did not thing the pledge would last long. However, that has not been the case. The 6-foot-3, 182-pound standout is the leader of a top-10-ranked Aggie class and is in College Station seemingly every chance he gets. That included this past weekend. Demas wanted to use his official just before the dead period, but had a birthday party for his brother. However, he still made sure to get to town on Saturday afternoon to do some recruiting on a big weekend. His efforts have already paid off with one player as four-star offensive guard Akinola Ogunbiyi, a one-time early Aggie pledge, flipped his commitment back to A&M from Georgia on Sunday. "It was fun. It's home, so it was just a normal weekend for me," the nation's No. 15 overall composite propect said. "But, I wanted others to make sure to feel like it was home, too. "I talked to Aki. We got him back on board. He just needed to see what made him commit in the first place. This class is like a family and he knew that. It was an easy decision for him." Another player in town on an unofficial visit was North Shore five-star Zachary Evans, the top-ranked running back in the country. "With Zach, he sees what's going on in College Station," Demas said. "I'm doing everything I can to make sure of it, too. You see I got Aki back on board. Obviously, [Evans] needs an o-line." Evans recently failed to include any in-state programs in his top 5. While Demas does not want to put words in his fellow prospect's mouth, he says there's a reason the running back made the trip to Aggieland. "All I'm going to say is, he's going to that school for a reason," Demas said of Evans' visit. "He's going to that school for a reason. He didn't just show up because he was bored. "It was the same thing with me. When I didn't include A&M in my top 5, look where I ended up. Vernon (Broughton), he wasn't talking about A&M too much for a while there but, again, look at his actions. He's been there now twice this month." Next up for Demas is The Opening Finals this coming weekend and next week in Frisco. His 7-on-7 team for the event is absolutely loaded and he has high expectations for it. "Oh man, my team, I'm excited. I think we're going to win it all," Demas said. "It's Bryce Young at quarterback, Zach Evans at running back. Then me, Julian Fleming, Gee Scott, Troy Omeire, Parker Washington at receiver. I don't see anybody stopping us. You've got the top running back in the country, the top receivers in the country. Double one of us, there are ton of other threats." While he wants his team to show out, Demas wants to make a big impression individually as well. He is not shy of having a goal of being the No. 1-ranked player in the country. "You know I've never lacked confidence," he said. "I want to show that I'm the top player in the country. Period. This is my chance to do that and I can't wait

  13. Breaking it down: Where A&M stands at every position VIP ByBRIAN PERRONI 31 minutes ago With six commitments so far in the month of June, the outlook for the Texas A&M class is starting to become more clear. While a year ago, things started to fill up a little more quickly than this cycle, the Aggies now have some momentum and could be adding more pledges soon. Let’s take a look at where things stand, position by position. QUARTERBACK At quarterback, the primary target is Haynes King of Longview. The nation’s top uncommitted passer, the 6-foot-2.5, 185-pound dual-threat is very close to making a decision. After taking four official visits in the past month, King wants to have a commitment done by the time the Elite 11 Finals begin. That just so happens to be this coming Friday. While his most recent two officials were to Auburn and Duke, this is pretty much an A&M/Tennessee battle. The Vols were in on him early and he has developed a very good relationship with the staff there. However, A&M has the distance factor in its favor as well as a depth chart that is open once Kellen Mond leaves and a proven quarterback developer in Jimbo Fisher. It could go either way, but my Crystal Ball prediction is on the Aggies. If King chooses Tennessee, look for A&M to circle back on Malik Hornsby, who committed to North Carolina last month. He took an unofficial visit to Aggieland two weeks ago. If for some reason they don’t land King or Hornsby, the Aggies had Stephenville’s Kade Renfro, a current North Texas commit, in for two consecutive days of camp this month. A&M is also recruiting four-star Alabama athlete Kristian Story as a quarterback and, should the Aggies land him, it would probably be the only way they take two passers in the class. If quarterback does not work out, he could play either safety or linebacker. Story is down to A&M and Alabama and plans to announce between the two on July 18. RUNNING BACK (Photo: Brian Perroni, 247Sports) This is one position where things could get interesting if several others all want on board. The Aggies took a commitment two weekends ago from Deondre Jacksonout of Georgia while on his official visit. They like him as a between-the-tackles back in the SEC. This past weekend, national top-50 prospect Daniyel Ngata of Folsom, Calif., was in town on an official visit. He is an all-purpose back and a change-of-pace guy that A&M wants in the class. He has only used one of his official visits so far, but the Aggies are very much in the running. In the same mold as Ngata is four-star Devon Achane of Fort Bend Marshall. While many schools like the electric playmaker as a slot receiver, A&M is recruiting him at running back. He took an unofficial visit to Aggieland this past week and also met with the track coaches. Despite an official to North Carolina over the weekend, the feeling is that he will stay closer to home. Achane wants to play running back so A&M has that going in its favor. He does not plan to announce for a while but he is high on the Aggies and vice versa. Over the weekend, A&M played host to the nation’s top running back in North Shore five-star Zachary Evans on an unofficial visit. While he did not include any in-state schools in his recent top 5, the Aggies are very much in it with him. There has long been talk around North Shore that he likes A&M more than he has let on and then Bradley Dale Peveto has been doing a very good job recruiting him. This one will be a marathon but all of the Aggie commits are working on him as well. Four-star Sam Adams II out of Washington is an Aggie legacy but has never been to College Station. That will change when he makes it to campus in late July for an unofficial visit. However, in-state Washington has been the school has followed for a long time and will be tough to beat out. He has also already used officials to Florida and Ohio State. Lamy Constant out of Brooklyn and EJ Smith of Dallas Jesuit both named A&M in their final groups over the weekend, but neither is expected to be part of the Aggie class. WIDE RECEIVER (Photo: Brian Perroni, 247Sports) A&M has one of the country’s best wide receiver hauls already. Five-star Demond Demas is the highest-ranked member of the entire class and also the face of it. He is in College Station practically every chance he can get, including this past weekend. Fort Bend Austin’s Troy Omeire is a national top-100 prospect that was a big head-to-head victory over Texas earlier this month. Both the Longhorns and LSU felt good about their chances but Omeire made up his mind after his official to A&M. Four-star Muhsin Muhammad III of Charlotte (N.C.) Myers Park is a player that receivers coach Dameyune Craigreally wanted and was able to convince to eschew the local schools for A&M. After an official visit last month, he returned again with his family a month later and filmed a commitment video. The Aggies are done at receiver unless A&M Consolidated’s Devin Price wants in. The son of defensive ends coach Terry Price still has a spot in the class and could make a decision soon after recently officially visiting across town. Arizona is his other top choice. TIGHT END Southlake Carroll’s Blake Smith saw a ton of offers pour in this spring. The 6-foot-4, 247-pounder split time between quarterback and tight end as a junior and, though he saw limited action as a receiver, was an all-district selection. He impressed a ton of schools this spring, though, and was offered by almost every top program in the country. However, A&M received his first official visit earlier this month and Smith shut things down for good after. If he is the only tight end in the class, it would not be a surprise. However, the Aggies are still after a few. Five-star Arik Gilbert out of Georgia is a longshot, but did unofficially visit this spring. Reeltown, Ala., athlete Eric Shawworked out at both tight end and linebacker at camp and could be a take at either spot. He is high on South Carolina after a recent official visit, though. OFFENSIVE LINE (Photo: Brian Perroni, 247Sports) A&M currently has four commitments in the class on the offensive line. Two of those – Josh Bankhead of The Woodlands College Park and Akinola Ogunbiyi of Fort Bend Kempner – will definitely finish in it. At this point, the other two are up in the air. Former A&M offensive line coach Jim Turner took a commitment from Navasota’s Jordan Jefferson in early February of his freshman year. At this point, it would be a surprise if Jefferson ended up in the A&M class. Fort Bend Hightower guard Smart Chibuzo could potentially jeopardize his spot if he takes other visits, as he has long mentioned he planned to. He is set to officially visit Aggieland in October and there will likely be a ‘come to Jesus’ talk then. The Aggies likely have room for two more and there are two players that are the most likely at this point. Athens four-star tackle Garrett Hayes is one of those players that is just not all that focused on the recruiting process. However, he is an Aggie legacy and has been to College Station several times. A&M is in good shape but Arkansas is pressing as well. Chris Morris of Memphis (Tenn.) Central has been to A&M perhaps more often than any other out-of-state player. A versatile lineman, the national top-100 prospect is high on the Aggies and plans to officially visit in the fall. A&M is in good shape with him as well. Over the weekend, Clear Creek four-star tackle Chad Lindberg used his fifth and final official visit to Aggieland. He’s still a longshot, though, and seems likely to be Texas-bound. Also in town for an official was Sedrick Van Pran, a four-star center out of New Orleans (La.) Warren Easton. It will be an uphill battle for him, though. A&M had four-star Carthage tackle and Arkansas commit Ty'kieast Crawford on campus this spring for an unofficial, but he is a longshot as well. DEFENSIVE END (Photo: Brian Perroni, 247Sports) At defensive end, Texas A&M has a commitment from one the highest-rated pass rushers on its board. Camden (N.J.) Woodrow Wilson four-star Fadil Diggs committed to the Aggies in early May as he built a very good rapport with area recruiter Elijah Robinson. He has since taken official visits to Florida and Penn State, but the Aggies are not too worried at this point. There are a trio of in-state defensive ends that A&M is after as well. Houston Cy Ridge four-star Vernon Broughton used his fifth and final official visit over the weekend as he made his way to Aggieland. The 6-foot-5, 286-pound defender had also spent the night in College Station a few weeks prior during summer camp. After the visit, there is some optimism surrounding Broughton and A&M. He plans to make a decision in the relatively near future. At one point, Arkansas felt good about its standing, but that has faded a bit. This looks like it will be an A&M/Texas battle. Neither would surprise but, at this moment, I would predict A&M if I were forced to make a prediction. Manor four-star Princely Umanmielendoes not plan to announce until October but A&M recently had him on campus for yet another unofficial and he really likes how he would be used in the Aggie defense. A&M will also get the final official visit before he makes his decision. This one will likely be a three-team battle with A&M, Oklahoma and Texas. The third of the group is Alfred Collinsof Bastrop Cedar Creek. The Aggies were the first team to offer him and he has an official visit set up for the Alabama game. However, his mother played basketball at Texas and, because of that, he grew up a big Longhorn fan. He was in Austin again over the weekend and Texas definitely has the momentum there. Four-star Jason Harris out of Arizona is a converted basketball player. He plans to officially visit A&M for the Alabama game weekend as well but his brother Jalen is a current defensive end for in-state Arizona while his father played linebacker for the Wildcats and his mother played basketball there. Needless to say, it will be hard to beat out Arizona. The Aggies will also work to get four-star Tyler Baron out of Knoxville on campus but he is a longshot. DEFENSIVE TACKLE (Photo: Ryan Callahan, 247Sports) Texas A&M added a big – literally and figuratively – piece of the puzzle this past week when Isaiah Raikes of Richland (N.J.) St. Augustine chose the Aggies over Penn State. The 6-foot-0.5, 324-pound defender is a run stuffer in the middle. The Aggies want at least one more interior defender to go along with him though. The most likely is a recent official visit. Dallas Walker of Smyrna, Tenn., was in town two weekends ago and the Aggies made a huge impression him. In fact, a commitment in the relatively near future from the 6-foot-4, 315-pound defender is not out of the question. A&M had a big-time national top-100 prospect in town over the weekend in Jaquelin Roy of Baton Rouge (La.) U-High on an official visit. He also spent a weekend in College Station in early February, while he was still an LSU commit. Roy has grown close to a number of the current Aggie pledges and once again left very high on A&M. However, the Aggies are going to have to fight off Alabama and LSU for his services. Like with Evans, this recruitment is going to be a marathon. National top-100 prospect Omari Thomas of Memphis (Tenn.) Briarcrest Christian spent multiple days in Aggieland last summer and plans to officially visit in the fall. It would seen as a huge coup to land him, but you never know once he gets on campus again. LINEBACKER (Photo: 247Sports) With the lack of linebackers in the state of Texas, this has become a position that is a bit of a question mark at the moment. The Aggies do not have a commitment yet at the position and, depending on how things play out with the top targets, A&M could find itself looking for late bloomers again like in the 2019 class. A&M would love to land four-star Kourt Williams out of Southern California. He has been to town both on an unofficial and official visit. After making it town Ohio State this past weekend, he has now used all five of his officials and a decision is not too far off. The Buckeyes have a lot of momentum there. Another outside prospect the Aggies are in on is Antonio Doyle out of St. Louis (Mo.) Lutheran North. The four-star was scheduled to be in town this past weekend on an official visit but surprisingly committed to in-state Missouri two weeks prior and canceled the trip. A&M will continue to work to get Doyle, who at one time was considered an Aggie lean, on campus in the fall. On the inside, four-star Noah Sewell out of Utah is a major target. The ultra-athletic 6-foot-2, 266-pounder has been to Aggieland unofficially and says the three schools he definitely plans to officially visit are A&M, Georgia and Oregon. Due to family ties, Oregon is thought to currently have the upper hand but he has very real interest in the Aggies and is one of their top overall defensive targets. Choe Bryant-Strother out of Georgia is a target at inside linebacker. He is coming off a visit to Nebraska over the weekend that went well, but plans to use an official to A&M in the fall. He has been to campus once for an unofficial. The Aggies offered North Shore’s Matthew Roberts after a camp earlier this month. He just transferred to the school from Kansas City, where he played defensive end. How hard the Aggies pursue the 6-foot-1, 210-pound defender at this point is a bit of an unknown. Another in-state prospect to pick up an offer from camp was Kenneth Phillips IIIof Fort Bend Bush. A bit undersized at 5-foot-11.5, 205 pounds, Phillips was offered as a linebacker/safety hybrid. Again, this position could see some late offers and that approach paid off a year ago. The Aggies may have to hope it does again. CORNERBACK (Photo: Brian Perroni, 247Sports) This is another position that could get interesting. The Aggies have a commitment from one of the top overall players on their board in national top-100 prospect Jaylon Jones from Cibolo Steele. But, they need a few more at the spot. A&M has one more big in-state target in Aldine MacArthur’s Joshua Eaton. The four-star could potentially make a decision this summer, as soon as July 4, and, if he does, it would seem to bode well for A&M. His only scheduled official visit so far is to Aggieland while Texas – which is seen as the primary competition – just landed a four-star corner commit over the weekend and is still after another. Two weekends ago, the Aggies convinced Kansas City (Mo.) Raytown four-star Dontae Manning to officially visit. The national top-100 prospect has been committed to Oklahoma since mid-April, but it is anything but a solid pledge. He is high on the Aggies and Maurice Linguist and Co. are working hard to flip him. Also in town that weekend was four-star Joshuah Moten of Fort Washington (Md.) National Christian Academy. He had been committed to Penn State until a couple days before the trip. Now, after officials to A&M and Nebraska, he plans to announce on July 2. Colonial Heights (Va.) Life Christian Academy cornerback Joseph Johnsonis another recently official visit. He was offered by A&M on the trip but it’s unclear at the moment how hard the Aggies will push. Johnson also plans to announce on July 2 and is down to A&M, N.C. State, Ohio State and Penn State. The Buckeyes are not likely an option and he could decide to rejoin the Wolfpack commitment list. Yet another prospect announcing on July 2 is Joey Hunter of Tyrone (Ga.) Sandy Creek. He earned an offer after an impressive camp performance earlier this month. However, the timing of his commitment could benefit South Carolina, which had him on campus for an official visit this past weekend. The Aggies would like to add a junior college corner as well but with Blinn’s Marco Domio likely LSU-bound, there is a question as to who it could be. Look for the defensive staff to continue evaluating players during the season. SAFETY (Photo: Billy Embody, 247Sports) Like with cornerback, there are a lot of moving parts at safety. And, like at cornerback, there is a big in-state target. With out-of-state prospects Jordan Morant and Antonio Johnson committing to Michigan and Tennessee, respectively, the Aggies will turn the hear up even more on Shadow Creek four-star Xavion Alford. 3COMMENTS He is close friends with Eaton and the two made the trip together to campus for a recent camp. If Eaton ends up in the fold, he would help the Aggies in their pursuit of Alford. Alford is also high on Auburn, Florida, LSU and Texas, among others. Houston St. Pius speedy wide receiver Seth Jones was recently asked to come back for a second camp at A&M and work at defensive back, a position he has not played. He impressed enough to earn an offer. The 6-foot, 180-pounder is fast enough to play corner but could be a better fit at safety. This will likely be an A&M/Baylor battle and could come down to if he wants to stay at wideout. Prior to the Aggie offer, Jones was close to committing to the Bears. The Aggies are also trying to get Vito Tisdale from Kentucky in town for a visit but, until he makes it, should be considered a longshot. A&M could also potentially circle back to Dwight McGlothern if his senior season at Klein Oak goes well. He was once considered a heavy Aggie lean
