  1. My dad was the 4th of 9 kids growing up during WW2. Sanitation wasn't great in that part of the world, and 2 of my uncles, and an aunt died of unknown diseases while they were still young. My grandfather took my aunt out to the barn to die, and instructed my dad not to give her food or water because she was going to die anyway, and not to waste it on her. I never asked how my uncles died... Being the only surviving boy, my dad got to go to school while my aunts stayed home to help the family. He eventually graduated college and became a diplomat. Of the surviving aunts, only one has made it past elementary school. When my dad was a kid, he wore hand me downs from American GIs, and had to use a string to hold his pants up. A "nice" meal was to actually have rice with butter donated by missionaries. Otherwise their typical meal was sweet potatoes and vegetables. My dad is retired now with a pension. Everything him and my mom don't spend goes to my aunts or to his elementary school. I guess his elementary school was his first step towards a white collar career. If you saw him now, you'd never know he grew up dirt poor. He doesn't have the mindset of a poor person - pinching every penny, trying to protect his own. But he's frugal to himself and carefully considers everything he buys. Him and my mom are coming to visit in June, I should sit him down and find out more about his childhood and may get the low down on how my uncles died.
  2. I’d like to explore the Northern Territories on that map in more detail.
  3. Looks better than anything Zack Snyder comes up with.
  4. Staying up until 3:30 celebrating new years did not sit well with the rest of my day.
  5. What do you call a party with 100 dwarves?
  6. I want to argue with you. But mayo. Needs some steak fries to go with that mayo. If you haven't tried it yet, you are missing one of life's pleasures.
  7. $5 says the dad’s username is @Prepuce of Doom
  8. Feel your pain. My wife tries to micro-manage me at times - telling me what to do, when to do in, and how to do it. Sometimes she'll stand over my shoulder to see if I'm doing it right. My response to her is if she wants it done a certain way, she can do it herself. We have an unspoken division of labor in the house. I ask her to tidy up, but do the deep clean myself. On weekends, the kitchen belongs to me and she needs to GTFO because she doesn't understand texture and timing..
  9. A lot of posts about my ski weekend, so here’s another. Skiing and snowboarding is not a fat person sport. Hardly saw anyone on the slopes with a gut or fupa. Even the people in the lodge areas were thin compared to the general population.
  10. It really was a beautiful explosion. I hope all that the stuff raining down at the end is asbestos.
  11. We went to Mammoth. The snow wasn’t good. Mostly packed and icy, with a few powdery spots in the shade. It snowed last Tuesday, and I heard everything before and after was man-made. I still had a great time because the whole family got to ski / snowboard together for the first time. The slopes were pretty easy - some were rated blue/black, but easier than blues at other resorts.
  12. I got my wife a pair of Uggs because hers were worn out. I got a hoodie with a Fender logo. We also spent $5-6K for a long weekend in Mammoth, which was awesome. Great skiing even though the snow was terrible. Maybe because this was the first year the entire family could ski together (albeit slowly).
  13. Likely not in the short run. But the initial goal is to eliminate the long range ground to air missiles, Russian airfields before they can go to ground attack mode. That’s what the US did in the first gulf war. Once the skies are clear, you can do whatever the fuck you want.
  14. My daughter strapped on skis for the first time on Saturday. By today, she was going down fairly difficult blue slopes - some with moguls. Still needs a lot of practice, but I’m really happy she picked it up so quickly.
  15. Maybe you shoulda asked Santa for a full size thumb nail. /sorry!!!
  16. Radars emit microwaves when they track airborne targets. The US has developed anti-radiation missiles (e.g. the AGM-88 HARM) that will follow the microwaves back to the emitter, ie. the radar installation. There are planes that fly “wild weasel” missions. Their task is to get enemy radars to track and lock onto them. Then they fire the HARM and GTFO of Dodge. It’s likely the US has also given Ukraine decoys that mimic airplanes. So the hope is the radars lock onto the decoys instead of the planes themselves. Slow enough for ya?
  17. Only 2 hours? It took me about 5 to put one together. Granted I started at 10 and was already tired af. But totally worth it. Between my kids, we got about 6-7 years of solid use.
  18. Forgetting every single ski trip to bring chapstick with UV protection. It hurt like hell eating tortilla chips and salsa.
  19. Wife and I met with a CFP last weekend, and she's finally digging into her various retirement accounts accumulated over the years. I have a pretty good idea of her roll-overs and current 401(k), but I can't help statements like this: "Oh... I guess my company opened up a Merrill Lynch account for me when they gave me stock..." "How much is it worth?" "$35K" "Whoohoo! But you seriously didn't know about it?" "I know they gave me stock, just didn't know where it was..." Previously her bonuses were all cash. But the company was bought out last year, and she "thought" they said the bonuses would now be split 50% cash / 50% stock. What actually happened was they gave her the same cash bonus as last year and just gave her the equivalent in stock.
  20. Googling... and... nope. Not flawless. Whether she's pretty enough for TV is up for debate. I'd say yes. One thing we can all agree upon is... she's got HUUUGE tracts of land.
  21. Our entire department is out sick today... One guy felt really sick last Wednesday, then came back to work on Thursday and Friday. He told me today his wife has Covid. On Friday, I wasn't 100% but wore a mask while I was around other people. I have some sinus pressure now, but otherwise okay. Another coworker is flat on his back; the 3rd has some nasal drip (for now). I'm fucking pissed at the first guy because he's so cavalier about coming in to the office sick. It's not the first time he's come in sick and I've had to tell him to GTFO either.
