  1. I'm waiting patiently by the phone for it to receive a call from Rome any minute.
  2. Benn looked like absolute dogshit last night. Apart from a terrible penalty, he had a bad give-away in the defensive zone that ended up in the back of our net for their second goal. He was really sub-par. I didn't realize that this is a contract year for him and that he's a UFA after this year. I really don't know what we do about that.
  3. Why do you hate sports drama?
  4. Just waaaay too many turnovers on the defensive zone right now.
  5. Between the weird sound mixing and the low-energy announcers, this is the worst game presentation I’ve ever seen for an NHL game.
  6. I mean, it's a video . . . for a hockey team . . . in Winnipeg. So I really don't know what I was expecting. But even so--that's the whitest goddamned thing I've ever seen. And I fucking went to Highland Park High School. And SMU Law. So I've seen some white goddamned shit in my day.
  7. With Kemp announcing that he's not running for Senate, it's now highly likely that Greene will. And if she runs, she'll win the primary. She's probably the worst possible candidate the Trumpublicans could run, so that's a nice little bit of news.
  8. Thanks for posting that. I've never seen video of Josh and Razor during the game, and that's really fun. I didn't realize they were so close to the fans (Josh even giving a fist-bump after a goal). And Razor so sedate is really kind of weirding me out.
  9. Yeah, but Eanes lost a good school-board member to a lunatic MAGAt. Now, in fairness, the MAGAt did a real good job of hiding her lunacy. And Eanes is having to deal with a real tough budget situation, which has pissed off a lot of people who are not accustomed to being told that they can't have everything they want. So it was a little bit predictable. But still--it's disconcerting.
  10. Thought we were done. Really did. The building was dead, and then Mikko woke it up with that first goal. For the third goal, it was almost as loud as Reunion.
  11. This team can’t even get the ball out of the infield right now.
  12. Glad it worked. I really love Pesce. The menu is maybe my favorite in town. I mean, any menu that has sweetbreads on it is going to be pretty high on my rankings. The chef always comes out to check on each table. The waitstaff is really very good. And the bar frequently has quite a lot of talent. Fuck--maybe I'll show up there tonight.
  13. No--I'm sorry, but fuck him. He came into my country, availed himself of its openness, opportunity, and kindness. And while doing so, actively worked to undermine all those things. He came here and stanned for a guy who tried to violently overthrow the government of the United States. He openly supported a guy who promised to undermine the Constitution, carry out vendettas against his political opponents, and eliminate the rule of law. He's an enemy of the United States. He has campaigned to destroy the country I love and that my forefathers helped build. And if he dies in the deepest darkest hole El Salvador has to offer, then it'll be precisely the death he deserves.
  14. And god knows they had a lot more at bats.
  15. I mean, we're firing Justin Viele immediately after this game, right?
  16. Beyond the cost is the small matter of getting an interbasin transfer. The water in Lake Lavon is owned by the North Texas Municipal Water District. Even assuming NTMWD would sell some of that water to LCRA (Hint: it wouldn't), it'd have to get a permit from TCEQ to transfer that water from the Trinity River Basin to the Colorado River Basin (somehow skipping over the Brazos). That permit wouldn't be forthcoming because, among other people, Houston would pitch an absolute fit because that would mean less water going into Lake Livingston. So no--forget about it.
  17. Oh, look--I understand the economics of it. It's part of the death of rural America. There's a great leaving-behind. People who have the intelligence and wealth to leave have done so. And that leaves behind a poorer, less intelligent, and generally older group. And that's not a group that is clamoring for quality ingredients or preparation. It's a big change for 30 years ago. And its indicative of other societal changes that are reflected in a whole variety of things that you wouldn't necessarily think about if you're coming from urban or suburban Texas.
  18. And Will's not doing any better.
  19. Oh, dear. This game is going to get rough.
  20. It is funny how nobody in the crowd even starts to stand up until the ball is almost in the bullpen. And being at the game, that's how it felt--just like it was going to be a long out or maybe a foul. But the damned thing just kept carrying.
  21. How many "points" wins the game today? "Points?"
  22. There is a real open question about whether he is "coachable." And I mean that not in the standard way the term is used. Will he actually listen to any coach who isn't is dad (and on whom he's not dependent for an inheritance)? It's like a home-schooled kid applying to college? Will he take instruction from anyone who's not a parent? I mean, I don't know. But it wouldn't surprise if the admissions department decides he's just not Princeton material and the kid can only get into the University of Illinois.
  23. I think it's part of a larger discussion of small-town malaise. Cost is obviously a big part of it. Canned and frozen stuff last a lot longer than fresh, leading to less food waste. Pre-formed and pre-packaged is easier, meaning you probably need less kitchen staff. But at the same time, fresh shit can be sourced cheaply if you put in a little work. I mean, ok--it's significantly more work than just calling Sysco. But still, in a rural area it shouldn't be that hard to source fresh meat and produce from local providers. And yeah--pounding out the CFS yourself rather than buying the shitty pre-formed things takes a bit of time. But is it really that much more work? The real problem is a complete absence of pride in the product. And that lack of pride probably derives in large part to the issue you identify--your customer base wouldn't appreciate it even if you did put in the extra work. They're happy with Sonic and Subway. So why put together a decent meal if you're not going to be rewarded for it? Thirty years ago, if I were to drive from Austin to Marshall or to Wichita Falls or to Marfa, there'd probably be a half-dozen places in random little towns that you'd really look forward to stopping at. And virtually every little town would have a place that would be at least worth a stop. Today--not a one. Genuinely, not one. I mean, maybe Perini Ranch is on the way to Wichita Falls. I don't know. But other than that, Brisket's right--the local Mexican place is the only place you ought to consider eating in small-town Texas.
