  1. I have a much different take. The cba is going to spread the wealth more among the players. You should see a bigger middle class instead of what you describe especially with the increase to the exceptions. If the superstars want to truly compete they may just have to take a haircut off the super max, but even so the numbers are going to be so crazy that there should be plenty to go around. Mid tier players are going to see big jumps in salary. The all league stuff is going to be a disaster for the unintended consequences but teams like the warriors and clippers aren’t going to be able to spend their way out of responsible roster management any longer. Cap space will be more valuable than ever since getting out of bad contracts has real ramifications now on roster moves. I think we’re going to ultimately see more parity and smaller markets being better able to compete. No more of this super team bullshit.
  2. I don’t know if he’s been mentioned yet but Casey Hampton was an absolute freak. Guys that big just aren’t supposed to move like that. And the scary thing is that Shaun Rogers playing next to him might have been an even bigger athletic freak.
  3. Firing Monty was the pain free move. They had to do something. Getting rid of Paul or Ayton is going to require much more stomach. And he’s a shitty coach. Fine, he was hamstrung this year but he has been doing less with more since he was in New Orleans.
  4. Klay looks cooked. Wide open shot after wide open spot. If he were still a viable number two, the warriors are still playing. I really thought he’d come back from his injuries but he was less valuable to his team than Austin Reaves or Lonnie Walker.
  5. Loved him on sports center and the nfl highlights. Not to mention his catchy nicknames like Bert be home Blylevin and Oddibe young again McDowell. And the back back back bit was always good too. RIP. He will be remembered fondly.
  6. With a free agent, it's simple -- you just take them into the cap. There's little math involved. But with a trade, there absolutely has to be money coming back. There are different rules for taxpayers vs non-taxpayers with regard to how much you can send out and take back, but in general the salaries have to match. The trick about trading salary is that it only has to match for the current year. So you can trade someone on a 5 year $30 million/yr contract for someone who only has a 1 year $30 million contract. That's how OKC was able to keep getting assets for taking on cap. You can also use trade exceptions to make the numbers work. For example, the 76ers signed Al Horford to a terrible 4 year $110 million contract and realized after 1 season it wasn't going to work out. They needed to dump him and get cap relief. so they traded him, some throw ins, plus a first round pick (which was used on Alperen Sengun fyi) to OKC for Danny Green, some throw ins and a trade exception to make the numbers work. After that, OKC turned around and traded Horford to Boston for Kemba Walker and another first round pick and a second round pick. Walker had another year left on his contract so they ended up buying him out for $20 million. So they were able to turn cap room, trade exceptions and scrubs into picks.
  7. He should absolutely have his vote stripped. Those awards actually mean something in the CBA. It's not just some honor that you get a plaque for. There are huge dollars involved. Ja Morant not making all-nba is going to cost him $39 million. And Jaylen Brown is going to be eligible for a max deal because he was all NBA. Things are going to get more fucked now that they instituted the 68 game minimum. Guys are going to be eligible for max dollars that are undeserving.
  8. They can't just trade Ayton into Houston's cap space. It doesn't work like that. They have to take salary back and the Rockets don't have enough contracts to make that happen without giving up some real assets. You think Phoenix is signing up for the $15 million/yr Kevin Porter experience? Me neither. I suppose they could sign and trade somebody, but what does that look like? Fair enough. They aren't comparable because KD is a million x better player than Gobert. And for sure the Twolves fucked themselves and the market beyond recognition. I suppose we owe them a debt of gratitude for the Dejounte Murray trade. That said, Mikal Bridges is 26 on a very reasonable contract and an iron man who is only getting better. Cam Johnson is also 26 and a 20 ppg scorer. Kevin Durant is 35 and has played 137 games over the past three seasons combined. The dude got injured in a fucking pre-game layup line this season. I don't see how Phoenix is going to build out that roster and those picks and swaps are only going to become more valuable the older he gets. I don't trust their owner. He's been there for five minutes, made just about the brashest move possible and is seeking the consult of Isiah Thomas, who has turned everything he's ever touched to shit since ending his playing days. Zeke is like a coprophilic King Midas.
  9. Phoenix is more fucked than the Lakers were. The Lakers waited out Westbrook's expiring contract and were able to retool at the deadline spending minimal draft capital. Phoenix can't trade any more picks -- Brooklyn has them all. They are up against the new tax apron, meaning that they are going to be handcuffed even more going forward. It's not just financial penalties any more, the new CBA is punitive toward roster building. As it stands, they probably won't even have the taxpayer midlevel exception to spend on free agents. They really don't have many options. I honestly don't know that they are better off today than they were before they traded for KD. Props to them for pushing all their chips in, but there's a decent chance that trade ages just slightly better than the Rudy Gobert deal. And let's face it... KD will be on the wrong side of 35 when next season starts and you can't count on him to play a full season. CP3 is 38 and declining rapidly. The only asset they have to move is Ayton, and his stock is at an all time low. They can try to move off of Chris Pauls' partially guaranteed deal but I'm not sure exactly how other than waiving him. Personally, I think they're screwed. Offseason prediction: They shitcan Monty Williams (and God knows he deserves it) and Isiah Thomas takes a more prominent role in the organization. It's going to be a slow motion trainwreck.
  10. First Chris Paul and now Deandre Ayton. Probably a net win for Phoenix as bad as he's been. It's like the basketball gods are doing Monty Williams job for him.
  11. I agree that there is more talent than ever, and you're seeing more guys drafted late be surprisingly good. That said, the draft is obviously an imperfect science. We're still seeing busts at the top. Look at 2020: #2 James Wiseman, #4 Patrick Williams, #5 Isaac Okoro, #6 Onyeka Okongwu (who I still like btw), #7 Killian Hayes, #9 Deni Avidja, #10 Jalen Smith. That's a 70% bust rate in the top 10. I don't know if you count #8 Obi Toppen in there, but if you do that would make it 80%. Granted it might be too early to call some of those guys busts, but a re-draft looks drastically different. Devin Vassell and Tyrese Halliburton were #11 and #12, respectively. At #18 you have Josh Smith, #19 you have Saddiq Bey, #21 Tyrese Maxey, #25 Immanuel Quickley, #26 Payton Pritchard, #28 Jaden McDaniels, #30 Desmond Bane, #35 Xavier Tillman, and #52 Kenyon Martin Jr. I think there is more talent than ever, especially at the bottom half of the league. The floor for every team has never been higher. I don't think that the superstar championship model is going away anytime soon, but with the way the new CBA is structured it is going to be more difficult than ever to build and sustain a super team. It's not just monetary penalties now, once you hit that second apron you are severely handcuffed in how you build out your roster. And I don't know if this year's playoff is an anomaly, but I can't recall a time since maybe the 1970s when there has been this much parity in the league. And I think it's fantastic for the sport. It used to be only 2-4 teams had a legitimate shot at the championship in any given year. We're on the cusp of an 8 seed (who was minutes away from being eliminated in a play in game) and a 7 seed being in the conference finals. You really want to fix tanking? Maybe more parity is the answer and maybe this influx of talent across the board gives more teams a chance to truly compete. I honestly doubt it, but it sounds good in theory.
  12. Agreed on Houston but I think the Vietnamese food there is particularly strong relative to other cuisines. So... what's your go to for SA? There have been several Chinese/Mexican joints in SA over the years. Maverick Cafe, for one. There was one on West Avenue near Lockhill Selma back in the day that I can't remember the name of. They used to have a lunch special that you could mix and match, so you would end up with some freaky combo of egg rolls or won ton soup or tortilla soup along with enchiladas and your choice of Mexican rice or fried rice. Puro San Antonio version of fusion. And that neighborhood near Pecan Valley isn't bad at all.
  13. I read the pm and then just forgot to get back to him until after the article got published. But I wasn’t willing to doxx myself over school cafeteria enchiladas, regardless of how fantastic they were.
  14. Great close out to the half for Warriors. Things were looking a little dicey as well as they were playing and the game was still close. Both teams shooting the lights out. All the role guys killing it for GS. I wonder if the Lakers mail it in if they get down a few more in the third.
  15. San Antonio can't hold Houston's jock for Vietnamese. Like, not even in the same universe. Singhs on St. Mary's is pretty good though. Brisket banh mi is fantastic. Bun is pretty good. No pho. One thing about Singhs that I think is bullshit: even though you order at the counter and there is no waitstaff, they will auto charge you a 12% gratuity for dining in, which I have never experienced before. And then they hit you up for another gratuity on top of that after you swipe your card like most places do. So you're not only paying an automatic gratuity plus tax on said gratuity, but then if you elect to tip them you are tipping them based on the number with the gratuity included. It took me several trips to figure out why it was so fucking expensive to eat there relative to their menu prices. Does anybody (other than Helobious) have any Vietnamese recs? San Antonio is definitely lacking in Asian food in general.
  16. Man, this really sucks. RIP. He PMd me about using my post in his enchilada article. https://texashighways.com/travel-news/for-the-best-enchiladas-in-texas-go-back-to-school-in-san-antonio/
  17. Didn't she stab someone in the neck and kill them with a baseball bat? It was in self-defense ish, but I'm pretty sure she killed that dude and Barry got rid of the body.
  18. If Harden had four rings, you wouldn't hear shit about him either.
  19. I don't want to derail this... but TCU caught lightning in a bottle last year with an extremely talented senior laden roster that was recruited almost entirely by Fat Pat. They got every break imaginable to get to the championship game, as if they had a rabbit's foot broken off in their ass. They also got a big boost from trouncing OU and beating Texas. I know they've made hay in the portal and have been recruiting off of last season's momentum, but they lost their hot shot OC to Clemson and I don't see anything in Sonny Dykes coaching resume that says it is sustainable.
  20. Warriors with a ton of unforced errors down the stretch.
  21. Now there’s the Lonnie I know. Airball, bad turnover and then foul. Ham should pull him before he screws up again.
  22. Lonnie Walker looking like Micheal Jordan in the fourth quarter of this game is really really blowing my mind.
  23. Lonnie Walker getting fourth quarter minutes in this game is blowing my mind.
  24. 5 star lead pipe lock of the week culture.
  25. Stern? As in David Stern? He’s dead Jim.
