Was Billy Joel in the doc at all? He's always good for a solid quote and unvarnished take.

I kept one eye on the documentary while the wife was watching it and I was trying to get some work done.  BJ is definitely in a lot of the archival footage, but I don't believe he was a present-day interviewee like Lionel Richie, Springsteen, Kenny Loggins, Cyndi Lauper, and some others.  Funniest part of the doc was Waylon walking out when Stevie Wonder went off on his "we need to insert some Swahili words" tangent.

These were my favorites (at least as much as I can recall), not necessarily the "best" as works of art.

    2023 -- Oppenheimer

2022 -- Emily the Criminal [Banshees is a close second.  2022 generally sucked in terms of movies, IMO.]

2021 -- Belfast [2021 was pretty bad as well]

    2020 -- Nomadland

    2019 -- OUATIH/Ford v. Ferrari

    2018 -- The Favourite

    2017 -- The Post

2016 -- Hell or High Water  [really enjoyed La La Land as well]

    2015 -- Sicario

    2014 --  Whiplash/The Homesman

    2013 -- American Hustle

  3. Side note -- my understanding is that the families of the deceased victims as well as the other victims filed a civil lawsuit against the school district and certain school employees, but a judge dismissed the lawsuit in 2023.  I've read differing reasons for the dismissal -- one article referenced governmental immunity and another one stated the judge found the alleged acts/omissions by the school employees weren't the proximate cause of the harm.  That decision is currently on appeal.

The victims had also sued the Crumbleys, but apparently dropped them from the suit last year in order to facilitate the appeal of the decision to dismiss the school defendants.  I suspect the Crumbleys don't have much money to satisfy any potential civil judgment in any event.

I didn't mind "Zombie" too much.  Her Irish inflection -- practically a yodel -- was kinda cool.annoying.  Plus, no autotune (clearly).

    FIFY

I don't mind any of their other songs, but the chorus of Zombie was nails on a chalkboard for me.

I would imagine all the obvious ones have already been posted somewhere in this thread - black magic woman, red red wine, Whitney Houston's cover of Dolly's song, Hallelujah, etc.

I went back through the thread earlier and I don't think Red Red Wine was posted, so that's a really good one.  (Quite a few videos that were linked in the posts made years ago are no longer visible, so I'm not 100% sure about which particular songs have already been mentioned.  But I'm pretty sure Red Red Wine wasn't listed.)

  6. OK, let's try to get this thread back on track.  Most of the really good examples of "the cover is better than the original" have already been posted above.  But I'm sure there are still some good ones out there.

This first one -- I don't think it's better than the original, but it's pretty good.  And it led me to the original (by Pulp), so I have a soft spot for it.

I'm thinking that lady is a damn liar.  A snake falling from the sky isn't going to wrap around your arm and start striking your face.  The marks on her arm aren't consistent with talons, either.

    Or that.

I suspect most music fans are predisposed to carry their infatuation with certain artists they discovered in their youth throughout their lives.  To me, the bar to clear would be whether or not a legacy artist engages kids of later generations.  The Beatles certainly do.  Led Zeppelin to some degree, The Clash, Nirvana, there are plenty of bands that scores of current 20-ish kids love.  The Doors never seem to make that cut . . . because they sucked.

  9. While checking out the online tributes to Brother Wayne, I ran across this video of the early 2000s version of MC5 doing "Kick Out The Jams" on Craig Kilborn's old late night talk show.  Blast from the past.  Mark Arm, Evan Dando, and Marshall Crenshaw doing the vocals.  Dennis Thompson the drummer is now the last original member still living I believe.  I wonder if Wayne's shirt was a nod to his stretch in prison.

  10. I'm thinking hawk had probably caught the snek and was attempting to fly with it in its talons.  Snek breaks free and drops on unsuspecting woman.  Snek is pissed, so strikes at woman.  Hawk then goes to retrieve its prey.

Hoping Moose has hunkered down, seeing reports of -40° in Fairbanks, and 75-100+ inches of snow recently in Juneau and Anchorage.

Sounds like an average Alaska winter.

Flying in directly to Monterey looks like the way to go.

That's a pretty small airport, so options are going to be limited, though it does appear that there's a daily AA flight from Dallas that goes there.  Still, I think the San Jose airport is going to have more (and probably cheaper) flight options, and it's an easy 90 minute drive from that airport to Carmel down the 101 and the 1.
