  1. But at what percentage within their operation? Upstream E&P life cycle water management has really grown in the last decade; the produced water managment subsection has really taken off since 2013-2014 or so. The stuff that PXD, DVN, SWN, etc, have been doing on the water side is pretty damn cool and innovative. But let's not pretend that every major player isn't poking new water wells to support growing ops, either.

  7. In the documentary I saw about him, he has a successful (relative) launch and touchdown. That steam rocket is basically a water heater. They crank the heat up the night before, then by launch time it's built up enough pressure. As you pointed out, it's only powered on whatever energy of steam is stored at takeoff. He knew that thing would never get as high as he claimed. I don't think this guy cared two shits about the flat earth movement. He just used it as a vehicle for self promotion and funding his hobby.
  8. From what I just read, the distinction between the two has to do with how the act. In low populations, locust act the same and are generally indistinguishable from grasshoppers. However, in higher populations, their behavior changes dramatically, and this is often accompanied with a change in physical characteristics. Just based on my observations of the water level at bastrop back when the most recent flood hit travis (October '18?), Bastrop flooding would be severe at a minimum; there's a bit of storage in the floodplain between Austin and there, so the peak wouldn't be as bad (relatively speaking). There's significant storage in the floodplain between bastrop and wharton/bay city. Not sure how bad flooding would be down near the coast, but the river would certainly be flowing full in its main banks

  11. I had to correct my quoted post. Depending on the downstream foodways it could conceivably rise that high under a sunny day scenario. The only difference sunny vs pmp make in this case is how long the rate of water level drop. You could argue that pmp would be more likely to lead to total dam failure compared to terrorist activity (ie, no dam vs a whole in the spillway), and that's a valid challenge (and thinking about it more, probably more correct). I'm assuming a complete uncontrolled release in my 'analysis' which is picking a little from pile a and a little from pile b; mix em together and its worth about a pile of shit.
  12. Well had to rethink what I wrote here. I agree with this in the sense that the mode of failure would dictate severity of the event. However, I think the discharge due to complete dam failure would be an order of magnitude more than the upstream inflow.... but I may be way off on this
  13. Man, I posted my last response before reading your follow up. Note, I have not studied this in great detail, so a lot of what I'm saying is based on my judgment and general knowledge of the topography. Depending on how fast lake travis drops after Mansfield fails, yes, it could conceivably reach that high.
  14. LLs post got me to thinking about what may happen if Mansfield did go. I imagine the flow regime goes subcritical to super critical through the busted dam, then a hydraulic jump downstream before the foodways narrows at the cliffs and then subcritical until about mopac, then supercritical again where the foodways spreads out. The subcritical portions will be flowing higher and slower (relatively) compared to the shallower and faster super critical sections. That said, probably isn't worth differentiating the flow profiles as either would be catastrophic
  15. In general terms, assuming level pool routing, you aren't far off. However in this case, you need to look at a more energy dynamic model since the reach distance between Mansfield and Tom Miller is not great enough to attenuate the flood wave before hitting Tom Miller. The ensuing flood wave would likely be significantly higher than the top of the dam.... pretty much just cover it up and sweep it away. It's that extreme wave height that'll flood a much greater area.

  17. Thanks for the response. Your first paragraph clears up one of my concerns and the second confirms my understanding of the general mechanics. One follow up question, and then I'll pass the mic: how selective is the Fed when evaluating the loan, or how often do they say no or request a lower risk profile from the borrower? Curious as to whether that would be a canary in the coal mine type indicator, or if it's something that happens with regular occurrence.

My concern is this: Fed loans Institution A $x dollars on Monday, to be repaid on Tuesday. Institution A is able to repay on Tuesday, but then at the end of the Tuesday, turns out they need to borrow more money. This continues daily for a couple of months. When Institution A repays their loan, where does that money come from? Why does Institution A need continual assistance to remain liquid? Also, It seems that there is not a healthy repo market currently, and without Fed support some of these institutions may be hurting. I suppose my real question are these: is there a fatal flaw in the structure/ operation of the repo market in which the Fed participates? And what is the real risk to Everyday Joe if some unforeseen event happens?

  20. Is there any source that shows how much is being injected daily and the feds net balance? When I first heard the story a couple of weeks ago, It assumed that the net deposit was $500B. But on further investigation of how that market operates, it sounds like it could conceivably be a situation where the fed makes $10B each day for 50 days, but each one is paid k back the next day. Now, not knowing the rules, it's also conceivable (in my lay understanding and with the data, or lack thereof, provided) that the borrowers could potentially be running the market in a ponzi scheme like operation.
