  1. Right across the street from where I work. Wish I recognized the cold-cocking coward.
  2. He's also the first president where there is going to be less protected land at the end of his administration than the beginning, if you care about that sort of thing. And while the wall is a joke, it is going up in Arizona, where they are blowing up protected wilderness and important indigenous land to do so.
  3. I've got a Mango, too. A 5-mile hike with her new weighted vest buys me about 90 minutes of peace and quiet. I'm just glad that it's cooled down enough to burn some of her energy outside rather than watch her pinball around the house.
  4. I never notice it shut down during a cycle, but when I go to start a new load I realize its been tripped. I may be able to reach a different outlet to see if that makes a difference. Thanks for the input.
  5. I bought a used washer that has worked fine for the last year. Recently, it started tripping the braker every few wash cycles. I would love to limp along for the next 3 months until I move and get a new one anyway, but also don't want to burn the house down. Any thoughts on what's going on that would cause this and how urgent of a problem it is to correct? My location and hours make it difficult to get a repair guy to come out and take a look.
  6. As a Wise county resident for 13 months longer than I could have ever imagined, color me shocked that such fuckery could be afoot in this shithole.
  7. More fun, this time about plastic recycling. https://www.npr.org/2020/09/11/897692090/how-big-oil-misled-the-public-into-believing-plastic-would-be-recycled?utm_campaign=storyshare&utm_source=twitter.com&utm_medium=social
  8. https://www.bbc.com/news/amp/science-environment-54091048?__twitter_impression=true We are doing an exceptional job of destroying everything. Who needs wildlife when you can just have a world of people, cows, pigs and chickens?
  9. https://arstechnica.com/science/2020/08/black-paint-on-wind-turbines-helps-prevent-bird-massacres/ no word on cancer rates I'm 2 species shy of 400, so I care. Not climate related, but we could also turn off lights at night, especially in the spring and fall, keep cats inside and make slight changes to windows to make them more visible to birds. But why make any changes when we could keep doing the same shit and continue to wipe species off the globe? Sent from my SM-G970U using Tapatalk
  10. Got my mail in ballot application today, tore it up and tossed it in the trash. Just updated my drivers license address so these Wise county motherfuckers can't give me any shit when I go to vote in person on the first day of early voting.
  11. After mostly controlling myself for the last 4 years (excluding the occasional alcohol-fueled family holiday) in regards to my parents Trump support, the dam is starting to break. I try not to instigate too much, but the recent blatant racism in the leadup to the election is just too much. If he is going to vote for that asshole, I want him to at least experience some shame or realize that his children respect him less than they once did for that indefensible decision. It's all so maddening and depressing...
  12. They are both bikers and boaters, so I guess I should just count it as a win that they weren't part of Sturgis or any of the stupid ass boat parades. Sent from my SM-G970U using Tapatalk
  13. "I don't argue there are idiots out there. But they exist on both sides." Damn it, just got Anastasis'd by my own father in response to the minority invasion of suburbia. Sent from my SM-G970U using Tapatalk
  14. I don't stop by the thread for one day and miss out on a bird ID. I guess I've never gotten such a good look at a juvie kite perched because that one stumped me for a minute too, even though I see adults every day in the summer. Juvenile raptors are tough IDs for sure Sent from my SM-G970U using Tapatalk
  15. Having lived in Decatur (not by choice) for the last year, I can't say that I'm surprised. My neighbors have approximately 15 cars parked around the cul-de-sac on any given evening, so the people out here are really testing their luck. Sent from my SM-G970U using Tapatalk
  16. Kind of like the pandemic. Half-ass some shit for a short period of time to say we tried, then give up and let nature run its course. Bold strategy, let's see if it pays off for us. Sent from my SM-G970U using Tapatalk
  17. I play this fun game with myself every weekend where I think "I'll wake up early and take the puppy for a hike before it gets too hot. Then, she will be too tired to bother me when we get home and I can get shit done." Inevitably, I end up napping and Mango wakes me up to remind me there is shit to do. 18. This is where I'm at with my parents. I just rarely talk to them at this point because any conversation has to be incredibly superficial in order to avoid an argument. And ignoring everything that is going on in the world at this point makes for a pretty pointless interaction. Sent from my SM-G970U using Tapatalk
  19. The wife finishes graduate school at the end of the year and, up until recently, we were very excited about a big international trip. That ain't happening, obviously. As a substitute, we have discussed getting a secluded cabin for 7-10 days, ideally drivable from the DFW area. Solitude and natural beauty that could be enjoyed in the winter would be the two most important factors. Any recommendations for particular areas, or even specific airbnbs to consider? My initial thought is some sort of mountainous desert area near public lands in AZ or something, where we could possibly get some hiking in and get a place with wide open views. But I could see a place in the smoky mountains region being equally awesome as well. Thoughts? Sent from my SM-G970U using Tapatalk
  20. Things have already evened out on the tug-of-war front.
  21. This was 2.5 seconds before Donnie put a hole in Mango's lip for trying to steal the toy he had already thoroughly destroyed. The old man is recognizing that time is running out on him being the big dog in the house (even though he will still be kicking her ass when he is not only 10 years older but 20 pounds lighter). Looking back just 3 months...
  22. I'm 32 and still clawing my way out of grad school debt, but this sounds like just the sort of thing I'd like to do when I've saved some coin. Not necessarily horned toads specifically (although that sounds awesome), but some sort of habitat and wildlife restoration, even if at a very small scale. I would be incredibly content spending the second half of my life on a project that never really ends like that.
  23. Florida up today with 119 per worldometers
  24. Oregon trail was the defining aspect of computer lab for me. 99 boxes of bullets, a shit ton of oxen and a doctor as my occupation. Pay the money for the ferry to float the wagon across every time it was presented as an option. Cholera couldn't derail my wagon but the Sioux couldn't wait to find me with 0 axles and 4000 lbs of rotted bison meat. That strategy got me past chimney rock every time. Probably made it to the Willamette Valley once. Im an early millennial, if that means anything. Boomers would also go with 99 boxes of bullets, but rather than oxen or a valuable profession, they probably brought 1,000 boxes of bootstraps.
  25. I've been meaning to spend more than I've ever spent on a single bottle of beer, scotch and champagne so I have options of what order I get drunk on that glorious day.
