If we're talking about Stephen King, imo some of his short stories are the best.  I think it's called The Jaunt about instantaneous travel.  

As per real life...  my father had a paper route for extra money when I was about 8.  I'd go with him, but I was unable to go inside the paper facility.  He park around d the corner, empty parking lot, under a light and lock the doors.  One night I'm in the front seat reading when I suddenly hear heavy, Darth Vader-mosque breathing in the back seat.  My blood turned to ice and, for the first time, I understood why those in movies froze.  I finally got the courage to unlock the door and run inside.  No idea what it was, but I get chills to this day when thinking about it.  I probably sat there for at least 2 minutes, afraid to turn around or move.
