Oregon State and Washington State have begun the formal process for a commissioner change to move on from George Kliavkoff, the Pac-12 announced Tuesday. The two schools make up the conference board following a legal victory late last year.

“The Pac-12 Conference Board has given the departing 10 schools notice of a proposed leadership transition with an invitation to provide comment,” the conference said in a statement. “We expect to provide more information following a decision in the coming days.”

The move is ultimately an expected one. Oregon State and Washington State had been in a legal fight with the 10 departing schools over control of the conference, with Kliavkoff, the Pac-12 and the University of Washington as defendants. The Washington Supreme Court in December declined to hear an appeal from the University of Washington on a lower court ruling that granted control of the conference to Oregon State and Washington State, the two programs left behind after 10 Pac-12 schools announced plans to leave for the Big Ten, Big 12 and ACC.

A week later, the sides announced a settlement in principle, the details of which continue to be hammered out.

The original court ruling determined Oregon State and Washington State must still treat the other 10 schools in a “fair, open manner” and have input on decision making. Thus, this commissioner change includes an opportunity for the others to provide comments.

Kliavkoff was announced as Pac-12 commissioner in May 2021, replacing the outdoing Larry Scott, whose decision making helped set the conference behind its peers, notably with the Pac-12 Networks. Kliavkoff had previously been the president of entertainment and sports for MGM Resorts International and was hailed as another outsider coming in to shake up and modernize the conference.

A few months later, conference realignment hit as Texas and Oklahoma announced their plans to leave the Big 12 for the SEC. The Pac-12 joined the Big Ten and ACC in the ill-fated “Alliance,” meant to slow down realignment change. Instead, just a year later, USC and UCLA announced their plans to leave for the Big Ten.

Kliavkoff’s hopes of keeping the conference together rested on finding a new television deal. But conference leaders, notably its presidents, badly misread the environment. They aimed too high and then saw the Big 12 jump ahead by making a deal with ESPN and Fox, leaving Kliavkoff to hope an Apple TV+ pitch was enough for his schools last summer. It wasn’t, and the conference fell apart as schools left for the Big Ten, Big 12 and ACC.

Oregon State and Washington State have largely settled their short-term futures. Its football teams have a scheduling agreement with the Mountain West for next year, while most other sports will play in the West Coast Conference for the next two years. The two schools are still sorting through the Pac-12 assets to determine everything available to them.

Oregon State, Washington State announce first schedules as quasi-independents

While the rest of their conference mates play in the Big Ten or the Big 12, the Pac-2 take their first step into an uncertain future.

Oregon State and Washington State are not members of the Mountain West Conference, but their 2024 schedules were announced along with the rest of the MW on Thursday.

With the dissolution of the Pac-12, the two left behind members cobbled together a scheduling agreement that will see the Cougars play eight MW opponents, and the Beavers seven.

Both teams did manage to maintain their respective in-state rivalries; Oregon and Oregon State will continue playing the Civil War through at least 2025, and Washington and Washington State will continue playing for the Apple Cup through at least 2028.

Oregon State will also host Purdue and visit Cal, while Washington State secured a home game with Texas Tech in what we'll dub here the Mike Leach Memorial Shootout.

Similar to Notre Dame's arrangement with the ACC, OSU and WSU's games with the MW will not count in the MW standings, and neither team is eligible for the conference championship.

Oregon State 2024 Schedule
Aug. 31: Idaho State
Sept. 7: at San Diego State
Sept. 14: Oregon
Sept. 21: Purdue
Oct. 5: Colorado State
Oct. 12: at Nevada
Oct. 19: UNLV
Oct. 26: at Cal
Nov. 9: San Jose State
Nov. 16: at Air Force
Nov. 23: Washington State
Nov. 30: at Boise State

Washington State 2024 Schedule
Aug. 31: Portland State
Sept. 7: Texas Tech
Sept. 14: vs. Washington (at Seattle's Lumen Field)
Sept. 21: San Jose State
Sept. 28: at Boise State
Oct. 12: at Fresno State
Oct. 19: Hawai'i
Oct. 26: at San Diego State
Nov. 9: Utah State
Nov. 16: at New Mexico
Nov. 23: at Oregon State
Nov. 30: Wyoming

Membership conversations are ongoing between the respective entities. It's a complicated topic since NCAA rules allow the Pac-2 to continue to exist for the next two seasons, and it's financially advantageous to keep the Pac-?? brand alive as long as possible.

Speaking of that, the Pac-12 Networks will continue operation through at the next academic year.

Televising Beaver and Cougar home games remains an ongoing conversation as well.

"Not surprisingly, there's great interest," Pac-2 commissioner Teresa Gould said Thursday. "We are working hard to try to consider the options that are on the table to televise all the home games."
