Texas liquor laws

I enjoy the annual lecture from the Karens in Texas who tell me to continue to support the ban on casino gambling in Texas as they head off with a box of Marlboro Light 100's to Bingo Night...that very strategic game of skill and cunning.

No lecture from me. Closest I've ever been to a bingo card is the fake ones on here. I am, however, a little more in favor of keeping the casinos in benefit of the indigenous owners simply because it seems like they've been able to reverse some population declines on tribal lands and increase employment. It's had its negative impacts as well though. Admittedly I don't know enough about it beyond that.

With the amount of people we have and the gambling/vacationing 'purchasing' power our state has in its borders and attracts through tourism/business.  We could open up a dozen casinos spread around our borders, have more money than we'd know what spend it on, plus kick back a few percent back to Indian Affairs at the federal level to help out reservations that are in most need.  Look at the size of our state, and we have less than 5,000 acres devoted to indigenous lands and I think 2 casinos on those lands which barely break even.  We have less Native American lands than Iowa or Alabama.  We could generate hundreds of millions in revenue to the state for schools or health care or children or even law enforcement.  But let's be honest, if we had that kind of extra money we'd spend it on something stupid like drop-bars for public school exits so nobody can get in or out in the event of a fire.

Yes, the other states lobby to keep us casino-free.  But it's a function of Texas being full of stupids.  The same people that think gambling will bring a criminal element into our state buy scratch-off tickets every Friday.  Like our liquor cartels, it makes zero sense.  We're just leaving money on the table, literally.  If you don't pass out brochures on condoms, kids won't have sex.  If you don't pass out brochures on WinStar Casino, people won't gamble.  Works like a charm, right  ?

You can't tell me that the Bar/Restaurant lobby doesn't help to keep liquor stores closed on Sundays and some of the holidays.

I'm not allowed to buy liquor by the bottle on Sunday but I can pay 3x the price for it at a bar.

The Texas Package Store Association is the lead opponent. TPSA has almost every liquor store owner as a member. It's their NRA. The convention is like a soiree that @immamac would have arraigned. Row after row of free samples and take home. The range ran from new flavored seltzers to a new release Highland Scotch that was fantastic. The giveaway swag is finominole.

Bottom line is owners are happy working 11 hours a day/ 6 days a week. Extra hours means extra payroll and possibly loss of profit from slow sales.

I am probably too stupid to understand any of the politics, but assuming it was legal to be open 24/7, what's stopping them from closing at 9 and on Sundays for profit reasons?  That's how other businesses operate.

I think it also has something to do with their functionality as a layer of the distribution network as wholesalers to on-premise sales.  Like Jose Cuervo doesn't just drop a case of tequila off at Iron Cactus.  It has to go through not just a wholesaler, but also a liquor store distributor and those guys don't roll on Sundays.  There's no reason to.

But yeah, the "we save money on overhead by not opening up Sundays" is kinda weird.  Because I'd think they'd sell way more on a Sunday, especially NFL season or festival season or boating season or whatever than they do on their average Tuesday.  Plus, while we in big cities think of liquor stores as these big box retailers with lotsa HVAC and lights and employees running around, which costs a lot of money to the owners.  Most liquor stores in Texas are 1200 square foot strip center end-caps with 1 guy working up front, and 3 sputtering lightbulbs.  How fucking hard can it be to give shut down on Monday or Tuesday and have that guy come in on Sunday instead?

Their concern is that once 1 chain opens on Sundays they will have to follow suit. Effectively the law protects them from a moron competitor to the detriment of the consumer.

Why would they need to follow suit?  Plenty of businesses operate on a 24/7 basis while their competitors don't.  Every market is going to be different but just like every other business they would find a balance when it's optimum to be open.  If the store is in an area where the costs outweigh the revenue they should close, and vice versa.
