I also wanted to add this picture.  Dad is holding a ticket stub of the Navy vs Texas Cotton Bowl (1/1/1964).  The ticket was given to me, to give to him, by our very own Army Brat.  This picture was

Tyrone Swoopes game-winning touchdown in Double OT - Notre Dame vs Texas

My Dad didn’t “letter” until less than 4 minutes remaining vs Navy in the ‘63 National Championship game.  ST play don’t “letter” unless you statistically return or kick the ball back then.  One had to physically be on the field for an offensive or defensive snap.

I’ve told this before, but Dad was standing next to DKR with about 4 minutes remaining of that Cotton Bowl.  He turns to Dad and asks, “Mickey have you been in the game today?”  Which Dad said only on KOs.

Coach Royal, as we had the ball close to the RZ, already up 28-6, said go in there and send somebody off, which Dad turned and asked who do I send off?  DKR said I don’t care who, just don’t send Duke off, preferably an OL.

True story, thus my Dad lettered after being a practice/scout team player for four years and had only played his Jr/Sr years on KOs.  Has a T Ring and National Championship ring for ‘63!  Will be buried with both, as they are his 82 yr old prized possessions!

That mofo could hit.

csb I accidentally chipped his pickup truck window once. Actually not a very csb. Kinda ruined the night, actually. I still wish I hadn’t done that.

not sure I embedded this correctly.  If not, go to the 2:03:30 mark and you will see Tre Thomas assisting Tony Brackens lighting up Coach Mackovic.  If you squint, you will see a young Gordon Shumway jumping out of the way, I was manager for Coach Bryant and was holding his headset cords at the time.

My guy.  He moved up to the Metroplex a couple years ago, but North Shore had been trying to get him back around their program in some capacity.  I don't think he even believed that his presence could really help the culture over there.   When Joe was there both as a player and coach, they were churning out guys who were very productive college and pro players.  Not so much anymore.

Man North Shore was a powerhouse when I was growing up and in college. They may not be "as good" as the old days, but they still dominate their district and regional due to them being in a very easy district.

I’d consider them a powerhouse now.  They can line up with most everybody.  The kids just aren’t workers or as disciplined as they were with Coach Aymond. I got to meet Coach Kay, and he seems like a serious guy, but the kids didn’t work after they left him.  When Joe, Ced Cormier, Tiki Hardeman and Gurode were there, those kids were dogs.
