I saw it the other day, and I enjoyed the technical effects, but the story was meh. Like others said, the first 2/3 were somewhat intriguing, but the last battle was like a remix of Avatar 2 scenes. I don't understand why they would do that, it felt lazy and cheap. I expected this one to feature a volcano, lava, some desolate landscape in another part of the planet with its own natural obstacles and problems for the Navi to... well navigate. No clue why they cheaped out and recycled a bunch of stuff from before. We already went through the flying dragons in the floating islands and explored the ocean in depth last time, why are they focusing on that stuff again? That's where the movie really lost my interest, the previous installments felt fresh, vibrant, magical and new, I wanted to see every corner of this planet. Nothing in Fire and Ash really felt new, except the other tribe, who weren't as pivotal to the plot as they should have been.

My biggest complaint too. Though I guess if 2 and 3 were supposed to be one movie, that’s why 3 isn’t have a new biome. It’s more like Avatar 2, part 2

Yeah, I saw that explanation too, but then why even make 3 at all? It's been done in the previous movie. If this were like movie 5 or something, it would have made more sense, but it being so quickly after 2 makes it feel like a mistake. 2 felt complete at the end of the movie, I didn't even think there would be a pseudo-Avatar 2.5 or whatever this was. Continuing the Spider storyline is fine, but it didn't have to be more water-focused landscapes, they could have kept most of the story the same, even with the flying whales and developed a whole new biome on the other side of the planet.

I asked Google's Gemini AI, and the results might surprise you...

Here’s hoping we get the sequels then. I took my middle-schooler to an IMAX 3D screening (theater one at Barton Creek AMC is absolute trash, avoid Barton Creek AMC) after he watched the first two the previous week at home and he absolutely loved them.

I’m like the others, I appreciated the visuals and I kind of saw what they were going for, but the last battle was too much. At this point, what’s left of RDA leadership?

Cameron said if 4-5 are not made, he will write a book wrapping up the one dangling plot line from three. What was it? The colonel’s death or the Ash tribe?

I have a suspicion that they aren’t getting made, partly a combination of Cameron’s age and interest in moving on and Disney looking at the books and seeing part 3 didn’t really make THAT much once all the bills are paid.

It’s over a billion after like 4 weeks. It’s probably getting made. I doubt he’s going to be involved in the minutiae of 4/5 but he’s going to be very involved in the overall of it.

I expect Disney is paying more attention to the $266m-$300m domestic compared to Way of Water’s $650m. Bear in mind the exhibitor share of ticket profit grows the longer a film plays (to incentivize them to keep it in theaters) and foreign sales aren’t as profitable as domestic. I don’t know how much they spent on P&A but rule of thumb it’s an additional 30%-50% of the production budget (and this is a world wide release) so it’s not insignificant.

Anyway, I’m sure it’ll make a profit but I can see how Disney would be risk averse at spending another $500m.

What was/is the attraction of Avatar?

I thought the first one was meh, so I skipped 2 and won't watch 3.

Also, the Avatar font is basically Papyrus

I haven't seen the latest one because it seemed pretty much like part 2 recycled with a new antagonist. These are technical marvels and you do feel like you're transported to a different world. I'll definitely watch it when it hits Disney+ or I can rent it on 4K.
