I’ll probably buy a surfboard.  It’s been a minute.  Hopefully it’s like riding a bike.  /drowns

Don't dive off your board in unfamiliar water. My BIL went surfing in Costa Rica and drove off the board and broke his neck. He's lucky to be alive.

Good safety tip

I haven’t followed this very closely. Suppose I only want to take one ski trip this year and ski 3 days. Is there a good place I can do that without buying a full Epic or Ikon pass?

If I had my choice I would be interested in Big Sky or Telluride, but willing to consider other options.

You should look at the epic 4 day pass. With their insurance package this year you will get a refund if you can’t book / reserve your target dates by a certain dates (I forget, maybe early December), plus Covid shutdown coverage is baked in. I’m fairly certain buying that now will be a big savings versus buying 4 day walk ups. I think today is a deadline for getting bunch of buddy passes which could subside extra tickets for whoever you go with.

Just looked into the Ikon Hall Pass.  4 days of skiing Mon-Friday.  If we go to Steamboat, will will ski Tues-Fri.  We really only wanted to ski for three days but at $75 a day, it might make more sense to just buy the Hall Pass. The young adults can ski 3 full days, 4 full days or whatever they choose.  They are not selling a 3 day pass or single day lift tickets.  I also can find a price of a single day lift ticket but if memory serves me right, $75 a day is a good deal?

75 is a good price. Are you sure they are still doing that? I didn't see it in the Ikon site.

The "hall pass" isn't for every Ikon Mountain.  I found it under Local Passes and then clicking on Steamboat.

I just looked again and the Ikon Hall Pass isn't there anymore!  I have them in my cart to purchase but now I'm nervous.  I need the name/DOB of my daughters friend to finish my purchase!!

Interesting. I know each mountain has some latitude in what they do, but it is my understanding that there will be no single day tickets sold this year. I know Ikon isn't selling 4 packs, either. Hope it goes through for you.

Frisco is hardly the woods.

Totally fair. I’m slinging around thoughts that make sense in my head about staying away from the resorts and off in one the surrounding towns, but WalMarts and Whole Foods fuck up my mental analogy. I do the locals epic pass and want the Keystone/Breck flexibility to maximize the chances of thwarting a jacked up holiday season.

On the COVID front, if Vail is limiting capacity and forcing social distancing, and we stay out of the lodges outside of bio breaks, and we maintain the basic safety measures, then I’m ready to ski.

So, while waiting for the last name a DOB of my daughters friend, the website timed me out and emptied my cart.  When I went back to the Steamboat page, the "Hall Pass" was not listed.  I call customer service, spend way to much time on hold and explained what happened.  The guy on the phone said, that technically that deal had expired but they could still sell them over the phone!!!  Purchased 5 "Hall Pass Tickets"!!!!  $77 round trip airfare and $75 a day lift tickets!!

Now time to find a VRBO!!!

This thread belongs on the travel board. It gets no traffic here and most skiing involves travel.

We booked a house in Telluride for early February. Looking forward to it as always.

We don't want all those unwashed losers here. It's the ski thread, if you do it you know where to find it.

I got my epic pass days reserved this morning. I was in the waiting room at 7am mt and was 30,000 in line when it went live at 8am and it took like 30 minutes to get through. But I had no problem getting dates in Breck and Park City. My buddy got “in line” late and the system said there were 110,000 ahead and he’s still sitting by his computer. Now let’s just hope the mountains don’t close.

I seriously don't know if the mountains will open.  CO is at its highest numbers (including hospitalizations) since the pandemic started and numbers are still going up.  Looking really ugly for this winter.

Yup.  I pretty much figured in late summer that I'd be taking the Ikon option of using the 20/21 pass in 21/22.

I still have not bought a pass for myself.  I did sign my youngest up for the WP ski team and bought him new boots, but that might just be a sunk cost.

Yup, totally prepared for that and the epic pass has insurance baked in. Hope is a strategy in this case.

Got my VRBO in Frisco and I got all 7 days I wanted b/t Xmas and NYD at Vail and Breck and 4 days for my wife and two kids during the same 7 day time frame.  Granted, I logged into the waiting room right at 8am (90k in line).

I don't want to hear anymore bullshit about Covid closures.  I was told that electing Biden would bring that to an immediate halt. (no CR).

All ski areas in National Parks and on public lands are open to the public even if they're closed.

This is my potential touring setup this year.  It's geared to being a downhill setup because i'd rather not sacrifice downhill performance for lightweight uphill mobility.

Not when they are expressly closed. This spring they were not open to the public, even for uphill access.

You wanna bet? National forests were closed much of this summer due to fires. And they were closed in the spring due to the Rona.

Stick to what you know. Clearly this isn't it.

Sumner and spring aren’t winter.  Under what authority were ski areas closed to uphill traffic?

Under the authority of the state of Colorado, and the resorts that operate on National Forest land.

I know there's no public lands in Texas, but you don't know what you are talking about.

So you don’t have a link?  One that says the ski areas are closed to uphill?

Colorado ski areas are open for business right now.  You can ski today in Colorado.

And the resort’s insurance carriers

I’m not sure about that.  I’ve seen people skin up ski areas even when they’re open.  Not having to buy a lift ticket is the point.  Insurance can’t do anything about it.

It’s Friday night and you’re mad at the internet?  Is it because you can’t back up your statement?

I never said they are closed to skinning up right now, i said they have been closed in the past and could be closed again.

You are free to skin up the mountain with no snow right now. Would probably be a lot easier to walk, though.

I'm pretty sure there was plenty of legal skinning at Colorado ski areas all last spring.  Ski area closed but public land open.

Yes, there was. Up until it got shut down. And it did get shut down. I don't even know what your argument is.

Of course it's closed when it's closed.  But when it's open it's open.  Even during corona if an area is closed the public land is still open until it's not.  I'm just letting people know that because this is the ski thread.  It's not the bummer thread.

Open?  Closed?  Whatever.  Last year the thing didn't really hit until the very end of ski season.  This year I believe that the National Forest Service will close most of the ski areas if/when things get bad, since the season is in front of us.

Not gonna be a good ski season I believe.  If some resorts don't open all winter, they'll go bankrupt.

This is one reason I have hope. Much like Vegas has figured out away to let the casinos limp along with restrictions, skiing is a lifeblood to many economies. If they throttle ticket sales, space out the lift lines, and largely rely on outdoor food / drink setups, then that part seems acceptably safe. It’s the nightlife, etc that would get dicey, but I’m personally not interested in any of that.

This is going to be a really challenging time for the ski towns in the North East.  So much more of their business is based on day tickets than out west.  You just don't plan a major vacation or fly half way across the country to ski VT on a predetermined date.  Vermont and New Hampshire also haven't been hit as hard as Boston and NY/NJ COVID wise- their two main markets.  Will the state officials shut everything down if they see a spike this winter?  I guess the NY resorts could see increased demand to avoid quarantine restrictions by the NY/NJ/CT skiers.

Crazy scene with most the big CO counties, including Summit, going to “code red “ this week and a new “code purple” designation created. All indoor dining getting shut down. Lots of limits on outdoor stuff, meanwhile, vail resorts blasting their email base with opening day celebration messages.

Yeah, not sure this is the year for a ski vacation. Go skiing during the day, eat a sack lunch outside, then go get takeout and sit in your condo until bedtime. Sounds fun.

Meh, we got kids, so this is basically us anyway minus the sack lunch.  Get back to the condo, light a giant fire and thaw out and get to making dinner with lots and lots of wine.  Looking at Park City next spring.  Fingers crossed.   Let's roll

Same here.  We checked into our hotel the day that they closed the mountain in Telluride this past spring.  Luckily, we were one day at the hotel before checking into our VRBO.  The owner was cool, and allowed us to re-book for this coming Spring Break.  So, we're going to give it a go again in a few months.

But, our house is ski-in / ski-out.  So, not a huge deal if the on-mountain dining is closed.  We'll have five kids and four adults and we're driving, so we were planning on having most meals at the house anyways.  If the snow is good and capacity is limited, it could actually be better.
