  1. In retrospect, with all these years spent rehabbing, LMJ should have worked on converting to a southpaw. Couldn't have gone much worse.
  2. "Race to the middle" is a thing these days. I wonder if the current playoff structure and recent postseason performances have diminished teams' focus on the regular season. All that money and effort just to get to October and lose to a scrappy WC team that's on an hot streak. I realize baseball is a full-season business, not just an October tournament, but getting hardware in return for spending big on your roster is far from guaranteed in today's game. I'm not sure it makes competitive sense for anyone to try to gather all the shiny toys, though we know the Yankees and Dodgers will continue to do so.
  3. Didn't see this one, but by the stat sheet it appears Carlson was really solid.
  4. Massey stabbing that one to keep it 1-0 KC was not what Baltimore needed. At all. Hope the home team can rally.
  5. I can't say I'm surprised by this flameout. We played like an old, ragtag roster for long stretches this year. The surprise (to me) was that Arlington and Seattle refused to keep us out of the postseason. I don't see that kind of generosity continuing, but who knows? A good friend and hardcore O's fan in Maryland passed of cancer a couple weeks ago. He died waiting for his team to win another World Series. Their chances don't look good, but I'm going to pull hard for them as long as they're still in it. Might be only another hour.
  6. Hader is just an arm. An arm unattached to a pitcher.
  7. Maybe Bregman hits a dinger and goes out in style.
  8. Not all of our guys, I mean.
  9. Pressly might have this great postseason record, but none of us is surprised by today's disaster. All year he's been ordinary. I think even our guys could hit him.
  10. Maybe we rally and go on to win the World Series 4-0. But no matter how this season ends, we can't trot this same mess of a lineup out there next opening day. It's just a train wreck, as our scoring woes have reminded us all year. Didn't realize the injury to Gamel was going to tip us over the edge. We should have grabbed Yuli before KC did.
  11. Ugh. Pena still loves a 6-4-3 while hitting about as much as while fielding.
  12. Back when things were looking especially grim a couple months ago, I threw out 90 wins for this team — including the postseason — as "overachieving." Several times since then I've thought that prediction to be too low, but as of today I'd be thrilled to get there. If we do, we'll at least have given ourselves a chance to add to it. I remain hopeful.
  13. I hate losing, even in spring training. But with the way this game was going, I have to feel decent about it overall. Bats woke up and sustained a rally long enough for one swing to have produced a miracle win. Didn't happen, due to bad luck on that liner, but we finally showed a pulse. If we can't take the next two from a young team, that's just how it goes.
  14. The guy has pitched a great game. Obviously helps to be facing a pedestrian lineup, but he'd be giving a lot of good offenses trouble. We just need to scratch out what we can and hope for a late blast.
  15. Not enough real bats on this roster. But that's been known all year.
  16. Oakland thinks this is a small crowd.
  17. See you on the other side, guys.
  18. Kenta Madea difference.
  19. Obligatory: biggest game of the year!
  20. I don't even care if Hudson is great. Forget him. A lot of other guys are excellent receivers without being divas. I'm confident Sark can find one who's a great fit for our offense and culture.
  21. My Astros fandom and much of Rose's playing career overlapped. The guy could definitely hit...but that's all I know to say good about him. The very definition of a hot dog. (He made Willie Montanez seem like an introvert.) Rose would dive to make routine catches look hard and was just as much a showboater in the batter's box and on the basepaths. I'm thrilled he never made it to Cooperstown.
  22. Here is the Atlanta area he was beloved. The Hawks never got anywhere, but he was such a defensive stalwart in the paint. Entertaining contributor to the game without being a diva.
  23. Won basically by default, since Wiggy's still on the mend.
  24. Back to the oil patch for him
