Isn't this abuse of power? The Executive Branch prosecutes and the executive is making public statements about who the police should round up.

The Roman Republic was transformed by the abuse of power wielded by Marius and Sulla. Their bloody, greedy claims were made with proscription lists of citizens to be prosecuted then executed (often the prosecution part was skipped). Some could commit suicide and their families might retain some of their property otherwise it all went to the state.

You can't have a president doing this.

Sorry I wasn't clear - that was a tweet I was expecting, not one that he had made.

That's the thing though - he was publicly calling for Hillary to be arrested while he was campaigning, and even after entering office, he still loves it when the crowd cheers "lock her up", and he's whined incessantly about why she isn't being investigated/prosecuted over emails, uranium, etc.

All of his twitter comments....you could argue that he is trying to undermine an active investigation, but he and his defenders would claim he was just airing his opinion, and honestly I doubt anybody in power in Washington wants to expend time and energy on his twitter rants, not when there is an investigation that is causing him to lose his shit on twitter.

But there is a line that he has shown he doesn't have the guts to cross.  Somebody has beat it into his head not to go on a firing spree.  It's clear that he desperately wants to, but he hasn't crossed that line.  I don't know who is keeping him in check.

Looks like Trump/Russia is getting a break from the news cycle courtesy of Roseanne.

So Trump goes on a Twitter rant, then the Roseanne cancellation takes all the attention away.

    Coincidence?

Yep.  It was pretty safe to say Roseanne was going to do something stupid at some point that crossed some line that Disney had.

  3. Trump is projecting so much on Twitter, I keep expecting a tweet like this.

In case it’s not clear, this is fake. I’m just saying that I’m expecting such a tweet at some point, because he projects far too much when he’s on the shitter.

Papapua New Guinea getting rid of FB for a month, government may come up with own social network.  This will end well.

    Quote

FACEBOOK users in the country can expect a month’s shutdown access to the site in PNG in order for the Communications and Information Technology Department to carry out research and analysis of its use.

Communications Minister Sam Basil said that the shutdown would enable the department and National Research Institute to conduct further research on how the social network was being used by users.

“The time will allow information to be collected to identify users that hide behind fake accounts, users that upload pornographic images, users that post false and misleading information on Facebook to be filtered and removed.

“This will allow genuine people with real identities to use the social network responsibly,” Mr Basil said.

The Minister said that the department could better analyse the positive impact it would have on the population during the month-long shutdown and weigh the impact of progress without or with its use.

Mr Basil said that his Ministry was trying to enforce the Cyber Crime Act which was legislated in 2016.

“The Act has already been passed, so what I’m trying to do is to ensure the law is enforced accordingly where perpetrators can be identified and charged accordingly. We cannot allow the abuse of Facebook to continue in the country.

“I will now work closely with the Police for them to be properly trained and informed to fully enforce the Cyber Crime Act.”

Mr Basil said the positives of the social network were there for the people to embrace.

“We can also look at the possibility of creating a new social network site for PNG citizens to use with genuine profiles as well.

“If there need be then we can gather our local applications developers to create a site that is more conducive for Papua New Guineans to communicate within the country and abroad as well,” he said.

Mr Basil said that a time had not been set as yet to implement the options but he would advise depending on assessment of the usage of the site over time.

That was the last straw? A tweet on Memorial Day?

The olds and military personnel/vets tend to hold Memorial Day as a pretty sacred day.  They also understand the difference between Memorial Day and Veteran's Day.

Like Goredho, I saw similar types in my family commenting on FB, folks who were either fans of Trump, or didn't have much of a problem with him.  They were not pleased that Trump couldn't restrain himself.

I think this study came out a few years back. It's gotten much, much worse.

    https://www.illinoispolicy.org/reports/whats-driving-illinois-111-billion-pension-crisis/

Some of the biggest drivers include the following facts:

    • 60 percent of state pensioners retired in their 50s, many with full pension benefits.
    • Over half of state pensioners will receive $1 million or more in pension benefits over the course of their retirements. Nearly 1 in 5 will receive over $2 million in benefits.
    • Almost 60 percent of all current state pensioners can expect to spend 25 or more years collecting benefits, based on approximate actuarial life expectancies. Due to automatic, 3 percent compounded COLA benefits, those pensioners can expect to see their annual pension benefits double in size.
    • The average career pensioner – retired after Jan. 1, 2013, with 30 years of service or more – receives $66,800 in annual pension benefits and will collect over $2 million in total benefits over the course of retirement.

I love when they try to make these people out to be millionaires by throwing out there how much they are going to get if they live X number of years, as if it's a crime.   The problem is that a lot of these people are not collecting Social Security, and their pension is not much when you look at it year-by-year.

It also doesn't take many very high-paid employees to skew the average.  Certain professions (such as firefighters) can also skew the average healthcare costs greatly as well, simply because they are under far greater physical demands.

We do have to accept certain costs for public employees, but we need to find a way to prevent hiring people that should never have been hired in the first place - when you haver tens of thousands of employees (or more), there are always hundreds, if not thousands, of jobs that simply should not exist.  Also, way too many high salaries can really skew things.

  8. $10 30-inch Zebo Dock Demon report (this one).  Actually not a bad little rod-and-reel combo for a 5 year old, and definitely better than those licensed rods-and-reels.

    Pros:

    • Great for casting when you are around/under lots of trees or around brush and a larger rod would cause problems.
    • Small enough to haul around in the back of your automobile and/or in a saddlebag on a bike.
    • Reel seems to be decent quality, and line can be changed easily (unlike some of the smaller/cheaper combos)
    • Seems fairly durable for the cost.

    Cons:

    • Can be a real pain-in-the-ass to set the hook.  There is some flex in the rod when you have a larger fish hooked, but not much at all.   By the time you realize something has hit your bait, it's usually too late to try and set the hook - either they hook themselves or they are gone.
    • Drag is either on or off.  There is no fine-tuning it.
    • Accuracy is very tough at first, until you have a lot of practice with it.
    • Due to the shortness/stiffness of the rod, I need to go down to 4-lb or possibly even 2-lb test (it's got 6-lb) as it is difficult to cast smaller jigs accurately and/or with any decent distance.

Would buy again, but would give serious consideration to the Shakespeare/Ugly Stick combo (except it's not a spincast) for $5 more - I think it's got a few more inches on the Dock Demon as well.  The kid loves it though.

We have only fished up and down Shoal Creek and in the ponds at Central Market on North Lamar (stuff that's in walking distance), and so are just dealing with perch (did catch one that ran about a pound and surprised us).  I do think we've had a small bass hit our bait at a place on Shoal Creek, but could not get the hook set.  I know there are some small bass that occasionally wash up in there.

Only using jigs, and being very careful not to hook a turtle.

I just hope that Amazon does not try and make them go cheap on the production.

Don’t think that will be a problem.  Amazon opened up the checkbook for Man in the High Castle which was a huge risk.

I hope so too. My concern is that democracy may die and the destroyers will rewrite the history books.

If you want to rewrite the history books, you first have to know how to read them.

  11. I have a relative who said he voted for Trump because “he’s a real fighter who is not afraid.”

this has to be one of the worst comparisons I’ve ever heard.

Based just on his twitter feed, if Trump was in a boxing match, the moment somebody popped him on the nose and drew a little blood, he’d be squealing like a pig and screaming at the ref to end the fight because his opponent was cheating.

Even Jimmy Carter wasn’t a wimp like Trump is.

You just have to shake your head that a sizable portion of our electorate laps up these word salads as fact.

When it comes from his lawyers/hangers-on, I think it’s less about the electorate, and more about them making sure he knows they publicly support him.  There may come a time where they need a pardon.

The role os slavery is not to be discounted.  The Southern states were adamantly opposed to a strong, central government but they wanted one strong enough to put down slave rebellions.  That's not much different rom where the Right is now.  They're against a strong government except when it suits them.

Also Indians. They needed local militias in the frontier states.
