  1. There's a 300+ page book published in 1917 that traces my father's namesake all the way back to the first "hopkinsnhorns" to come across the Atlantic and settle in Oyster River, NH circa 1666. Tracing back beyond that is difficult, as our name origin appears to be Norman-French, even though our ancestors were most likely from England or Ireland (despite family lore of Scottish origin). It's pretty cool to have such a long history in the states pre-dating the Revolution by over 100 years. If I thought 23andMe or some other service could trace back farther, I'd do it, but after 16ish generations, I'm sure any matches would be essentially genetic noise. My wife's sister was gifted this by her now FIL. It was funny to find that she was 2% Ashkenazi Jew. We joked that he was just making sure she didn't have too much African DNA before marrying his son.
  2. It's cool. My wife already knows she's Sicilian. If they didn't inbreed, then there's no earthly reason her feet would be so flat unless she's got a duck in her lineage.
  3. That's what it looked like from the video. It's potato quality and doesn't show any gore or even when he dropped her (view obstructed by window framing pillars), but he clearly was holding her outside the window prior to her fall. Their previous defense is not feasible. Ooof, this will not end well.
  4. Yeah, Doc, I'd like the😉😉 Rabies vaccine😉😉 for these two shitheads, please.
  5. Was supposed to see Bon Iver with a dance troupe in late February, but it looks like one of the founders of the dance troupe got MeToo'd and now the show is cancelled.
  6. My first ever prime rib cook. Followed Chef Johns recipe on a little over 5lb bone-in. Turned out pretty good, though I’d go a little more rare next time. Made au jus from the drippings, served with sous vide glazed carrots, mashed potatoes, challah rolls, and side salad, with a nice cab.
  7. I got a bone-in prime rib from HEB. Do I go sous vide or just follow Chef John's perfect prime rib recipe? I'm leaning towards the latter.
  8. This one is up there for me too. I'm not a Springsteen fan, but this cover is one of my favorite songs by The National.
  9. I'm not even a real DMB fan, but this cover with Warren Haynes is one of my all-time favorite live performances.

  11. I know this is heresy in Texas, but has anyone ever tried a Jewish-style braised brisket? I have to admit, after watching Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, I'm more than a little intrigued. https://blog.thermoworks.com/beef/brisket-in-oven/?browse_eid=d25bd4b6-af3b-4708-8dcb-61b3d0005e0b No aluminum turkey pan or liquid smoke required...
  12. Made this last night. Skyrocketed to the top of my favorite vegetarian/vegan recipes (I'm neither, but we do dabble from time to time). Doesn't look the best, but the taste was fantastic. I used the regular coconut milk, not the lite kind, but otherwise followed the recipe to a T. If anything, I might go 16 mins (vs. 15 in the recipe) on high next time, especially if you like the lentils on the extra tender side. https://www.wellplated.com/instant-pot-lentil-curry/
  13. It's shit like this that makes me happy I kept my 802 area code.
  14. I made a batch of Alton's aged nog last Sunday. Used 2 Stars bourbon, Hennessy, and Navy Bay rum. All told, it made 3 quart mason jars with just enough left over for me to sample a glass un-aged. Pretty tasty, but I'm thinking it will be well worth the wait. For whatever reason, not all of my sugar dissolved with mixing with the yolks. I beat them pretty good, but eventually decided the sugar just wasn't going to dissolve until the booze was added. Hopefully everything gets good and acquainted over the next couple weeks. I might crack open a jar this weekend for Lights in the Heights.
  15. I want a Federal investigation into this. These tactics are criminally reckless. ACAB
  16. Ok, this thread intrigued me, so I'm going to make up a batch of Alton's aged eggnog to have for Christmas/New Year's. The recipe I found calls for "Jamaican Rum". Does that mean like the strong white rum that Jamaicans drink or something more like the Meyer's Dark Jamaican Rum? AGED EGGNOG 12 large eggs (pasteurized if you need peace of mind) 1 pound sugar 1 pint half-n-half 1 pint whole milk 1 pint heavy cream 1 cup Jamaican rum 1 cup cognac 1 cup bourbon 1 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg (plus more for serving) 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt Separate the eggs and store the whites for another purpose. Beat the yolks with the sugar and nutmeg in a large mixing bowl until the mixture lightens in color and falls off the whisk in a solid “ribbon.” Combine dairy, booze and salt in a second bowl or pitcher and then slowly beat into the egg mixture. Move to a large glass jar (or a couple of smaller ones) and store in the fridge for a minimum of 2 weeks. A month would be better, and two better still. In fact, there’s nothing that says you couldn’t age it a year, but I’ve just never been able to wait that long. (And yes, you can also drink it right away.) Serve in mugs or cups topped with a little extra nutmeg grated right on top. https://altonbrown.com/eggnog-recipe/
  17. Look into those eyes. Look at that outfit. Look at that facial hair. That is the confident face of a man that has fucked over more teen boys than a navy recruiting station. No other way anyone would event ATTEMPT to pull that look off.
  18. And you should see the custom made jeans old Willie Nelson has wear to contain his knee knockers.
  19. Bogus calls. I think it stated that she had made 5 separate 911 calls regarding the Tuttle's Harding St home - making claims that they were drug addicts, selling heroin out of the house, had lots of firearms, machine gun, etc. I believe that the caller claimed her daughter was also a junkie in the home (which would echo the initial claims Acevedo made about the welfare call, which were wrongfully attributed by HPD to Rhogena's mother). Still, your point stands. Simple calls to 911 do not justify this sort of response without real attempts to justify the claims of the caller. This is basically a dumb boomer equivalent of SWATing someone, but HPD needs to be held more accountable for their actions.
  20. Media is speculating that Garcia made the calls because she was jealous that Rhogena Nicholas was romantically interested in her BF, Mr. Arce, who lived across the street from the Tuttles. Garcia lived 5 houses down from them with her mother. Apparently the Arce's and Tuttles were fairly close family friends. Mrs. Arce died 2 years ago from cancer and was a close friend of Rhogena. Even if this is true and all of the allegations that led to the raid were fabricated by this Garcia nutcase, it's still inexcusable for Goines and Co. to not do the leg work necessary to verify those claims before busting in their door and murdering them in cold blood. There is a chance that there is a deeper conspiracy here that would tie Garcia to Goines, but at this point, but honestly, I think laziness and a sense of being above the law is all that is needed to explain their reckless actions.
  21. I'd rather sleep in the abdominal cavity of a Tauntaun.
