The Dallas Stars 2024-2025 Season Thread: Win Now, Talk Later

I didn't get that vibe based on Pete's demeanor and reports that he was walking in a knee brace and looked to be in pain post game but probably know a bit more tomorrow. -

Seems like we tried for at least part of the game and it didn't matter. Our defense is just in shambles and has been for over a month. I don't think any way we keep home ice if both Otter and DeSmith didn't play out of their minds for about a 2.5 week stretch where we won game after game getting heavily outshot and out-chanced. Really hope we can flip the switch but with apparent Robo injury it seems like falling apart at the wrong time. Oh well, we'll see what happens on Saturday. Win game 1 (after losing I think 7 straight game 1's) and everyone will forget end of regular season. -

If nothing else Seguin back should help some vibes. I'm a little surprised not starting DeSmith but Otter hasn't been too overworked lately. Reports that flu going around (which would explain why Marchment sat both games instead of spreading rest around). Talk about shitty timing. Hope that doesn't spread. -
You've got to stop with the conspiracy theory bullshit. Read the fucking long ass text posted above. This isn't some tin foil hat we want to move to Vegas in 6 years scheme. Nico and Luka did not like each other (tons of reporting out there on this) and Nico convinced himself that AD was the answer. That's it. It's really that simple. Nico wanted A.D. and wasn't interested in shopping for anything else because it might cost him what he really wanted. Nico convinced himself that it would net a Championship in next 3 years and then he convinced Dumont of the same (with the added benefit of not having to cut a check for a Supermax). There was nobody in the room with Nico and Dumont to make the massive obvious counter arguments. And none of these fucking people are from fucking Dallas (and in Dumont's case, doesn't know shit about basketball anyways) so they completely underestimated the fan backlash and here we are.

I wouldn't bet against them. I was at the Stars/Jets game last week. Stars didn't even necessarily play "bad" that game (like they have in most others down the stretch) but best performance by visiting team I've seen in person this season by far. Maybe that was their "A" game but going to be a tough out for anyone if they play like that. Of course, I'm sure all the Jets fans will temper expectations until they actually see it in the playoffs. Not a great draw with the Blues as hot as they have been. If I were a Jets fan would have preferred the Wild for sure.

Please don't do that. You might get fired, and I would hate for my fellas to get in trouble with the Mrs.

There was a quote earlier this week (or weekend?) that he wouldn't be ready for game 1 but might be back during round 1 which gave some hope. That goes back to what the thought was over a month ago until it was reported last week he wouldn't be ready until 2nd round at earliest if Stars advance. In sum, nobody knows shit. If any chance at coming back this series, I would think he would have to be at practice (even if non-contact) this Thurs or Friday before game 1 and not sure they could hide that from media. That should be telling IMO. Shapiro had an article today saying he would value another day of rest for Harley/Lindel eliminating any chance of injury (which would effectively end the season) over getting rust off for Seguin. It was an interesting take and hard to disagree with when you put it that way but sounds like likely we see Seguin tomorrow based on Deboer post game comments -
I saw someone tweet that Rick Welch claimed there was a 75 - 80% renewal rate. I call complete BS on that. Can't wait to hear when the real numbers come out. McMahon (was it on the ticket?) said what he's hearing from people inside is that it's going to be a financial bomb between lost season ticket revenue, merchandise, single game ticket sales, etc.

Just heard about this. Hilarious. It's amazing how much they continue to fuck up the PR aspect. Instead of just doing the fucking press conference and giving non-answers to any Luka questions, these idiots once again highlighted their incompetence and it will be all anyone talks about locally on a slow sports day.

I think the Pitt/Minn/Winnipeg games were most concerning of the recent stretch. Vancouver was just fucking bizarre after we played a pretty solid game overall. But from 3/14 - 4/14 we played 17 games so schedule has been really condensed to close out the season. Harley and Lindel had to eat a shit ton of minutes in particular during that stretch holding off the Avs and trying the chase the Jets. We were running out of gas the end of that winning streak/road trip until we got an extra day of rest before last win against Nashville where we really played our only "good" game since the 3/24 home shutout against MN. I'm as concerned as everyone else as to whether we can turn it back on but I 100% agree with the strategy of resting guys last 2 games. If it were like the NFL where you can carry a deeper bench I would have liked to see us rest damn near everyone and lose 10-0 for all I care. -

Certainly not a criminal lawyer but $250K seems pretty low for a murder rap. I would expect $500K -$1MM more typical. Anyone with knowledge want to weigh in? I'm not looking for arguments what "should" be the case. I'm asking if any practitioner has relevant market insight. -

We didn't play Esa or Harley again (and obviously without Miro). So we rolled out with an absolute bottom of the barrel defensive lineup in the entire league the last 2 games to get those guys rest. The last few weeks are concerning (including several W's where we played poorly) but there is absolutely nothing to take away from last 2 games (or this Weds for that matter). All that matters is game 1 this weekend and we'll go from there. Surprised Seguin didn't play last night (I didn't even tune in once I saw he was out). Hopefully he plays Weds as he needs to get some rust off. -

Last couple of weeks are concerning but the rest of the regular season is meaningless after Thurs. You could tell energy was ramped down last night comparatively. I fully expect us to continue sitting multiple starters this week (like yesterday) and shift minutes to 4th line. Hopefully Seguin is ready to go tomorrow and can work some rust off. -

I don't think Nill gets any say. There are numerous regular season games involving playoff teams on Thurs so thought is they will try to let those teams rest to Sunday if they can. Sean Shapiro broke down his "best guess" a few days ago based on expected matchups and how TV's have historically selected and predicted Dallas/Avs Saturday night puck drop. -

I mean I don't know what we're going to do but can't really fathom the team I saw choke us out last night could lose 3 straight in regulation including games against Chicago and Anaheim. So yeah, I guess not far from the same odds from when we went up 5-2 on Tuesday with 2 left to play. Next 3 game for Stars should be 100% focused on doing whatever we need to do to get ready for the playoffs including load management across the board IMO. Results don't matter. Schedule has been brutal recently. We need to be fresh game 1 as Colorado will be rested. -

Avs lost last night so that's done. Stars host Avs first round unless somehow Stars win last 3 in regulation and Winnipeg loses last 3 in regulation which is never going to happen. -

Team is an absolute mess right now. Clinched home ice at least not that it seems worth much at the moment. Obviously no Miro is a huge chunk of the problem but not getting near enough out of our top forwards. Maybe Seguin can be a spark. Start working that rust off beginning Saturday. -

I definitely think both teams treat this as a playoff warmup game before, depending on outcome, both potentially coasting a bit. If the Stars don't win in regulation it all but sets the table for the playoffs (and pretty long shot regardles). Believe I saw Deboer say at this point he cares more about the way the team plays than the outcome Thursday which makes sense. We typically get beers between periods around michelob ultra area outside 103/104. I might bring out my now dated Stankoven jersey tonight in case anyone is around there and spots it. -
Jerry's failures are a unique combination of putting $$ and publicity as priority #1 with winning a distant 2nd while also being both extremely arrogant and incompetent when it comes to managing a roster. Completely different, and far worse, than Cuban. I think Cuban put fans first to the detriment of year in and year out bottom line and genuinely tried his best to help make Dallas a winner despite plenty of mistakes in hindsight. As noted above, it was a hell of a 25 year run. I also absolutely blame him for hanging us out to dry selling to someone that is incompetent and only bought the team for a casino play. Edit: I know you are taking the position that this is an intentional tank for a franchise move. I was open to that in the initial days but feel pretty comfortable siding with incompetence at this point for a lot of reasons that have been outlined in the weeks following not worth rehashing.

I definitely think there was mutual dislike between Luka and Nico and it was personal. But if you have any basketball/business sense at all as the owner or just any basic idea of what franchise you bought and what the fanbase (your customer) values, you choose Luka over the GM all day every day. It's a big reason why, Nico aside, I can never respect Dumont in any way as an owner. It's gross negligence to be this clueless about such a massive investment and to not seek out multiple opinions before trading your most valuable asset. Forget basketball - I don't know how anyone can respect him as a businessman after this. For all of Cuban's faults (and yes there were many) he built a massive brand in Dallas and significantly increased the value of the franchise during his tenure in the process. He built fanbase loyalty even in down years. My friend that just opted out of renewal after 25 years (his first purchase after getting a real job was season tickets) could not have fathomed a scenario he wouldn't renew 6 months ago. How does Dumont not float this by Cuban? There is no doubt in my mind Cuban would have strongly advised him that it would be the dumbest thing he could ever do and laid out all of the reasons why. So unlike someone mentioned above, there really isn't a scenario where I could forgive or in any way respect Dumont.
-
Might have been discussion on prior pages but from a 3rd person account of someone purportedly in the room (so take it for what it's worth which isn't much), but the story is there actually was some push back as it related to the terms of the deal (i.e., if we're going to do this we should go to market and get a better return either from Lakers or others as this isn't enough) and Nico just said, no, this is what we are doing and shut down any dissent. I'm just choosing to believe that is accurate so I can focus my disdain on Nico and the fat moron that signed off on it.
-
I mean if they don't make a run next year I don't see how they survive. It seems like the season ticket renewal rate is probably pretty low. Good buddy was a 25 year season ticket holder and didn't renew not even for the trade itself but for the way Dumont and everyone in the organization acted post trade shitting on Luka on the way out + having the audacity to bump up prices year over year on top of it. Just a clueless organization post Cuban and they deserve every bit of the failure coming their way. My hope is Dumont doesn't get his casino, gets tired of being hated locally and sells the team, then maybe we can all get back on board.
