  1. Yup... visited two exceptional wineries in Morro d'Alba yesterday... any area in the Lacrima di Morro d'Alba DOC and the Castelli di Jesi DOC. Great wines... most bottles 13-14 Euro and under. The most expensive we bought was 23 and it was a very special vintage of a Lacrima made as an appassimento. Very time consuming, aged three years. Lacrima is such a particular grape that for the most part, you will barely see any oak in sight... almost all aging done in steel or concrete. Le Marche are exceptional... so many great places. Exceptional food. People are great, prices reasonable. Lots of amazing towns and beautiful drives.
  2. I noticed Conad has carta with dog inserts (Not my dog)
  3. From Rome: Tivoli Viterbo Cerveteri Orvieto Spoleto Castel Gandolfo Lago Bracciano Lago di Bolsena Also, I saw a comment someone made about not sleeping in wines from Campania. To be honest, don't sleep on wines from any region. Each area has lots of great wines, grapes and wineries that may be completely unknown outside of Italy. We are visiting a winery today and one of the grapes used in that particular valley is a white grape called Famoso. This winery also makes exceptional reds. Had a nice refreshing Pagadebit last night which is another white grape from the area. Whether you are in Puglia, Veneto, Basilicata or whatever, lots of great wines at inexpensive prices. Don't get roped in my the Americanized prices in Tuscany.
  4. Yeah that's pretty funny. Buddy of mine played there last month
  5. Boat only access beaches like this with 5-6 people around... love it!
  6. Through the first third of our trip... sitting on a balcony now listening to the cicadas. The beach yesterday (below) was quiet and we opted to eat on our terrace for dinner instead of going out. In six days, we've heard two Americans here. I really want this area to stay a secret but trust me the experience in these kinds of towns in Italy is something else. Most we've spent on a meal as a family of four has been 120 Euros and it was a random stop that turned out to be fine dining. Will share more later. As for driving, still love it but we took a drive into a national park for a little hike and lunch. Temperatures from the sea to the forest were about 15° cooler. I've driven all kinds of windy roads in Italy but I almost never drove a straight stretch of road for 2 1/2 hours. Wish I'd had an Alfa. One section was the tightest steep road I'd ever seen outside of a Greek island. Another stretch was almost cow pinball. White knuckle driving.
  7. People think I'm an idiot when I tell them we've avoided the touristy cities... why do I want to go somewhere absolutely packed when I know for a fact there are plenty of amazing sites in Italy that are beautiful, filled with treasures and not as packed. "But its the only time we might be there..." I get it but if the experience is ruined by masses of people, was it worth it? I've been to NYC lots of times for business and a few times for pleasure. One year, we went between Christmas and NY and decided to go to see the Rockefeller Christmas Tree because the kids wanted to see the Lego store. Absolute madness... like, you couldn't move because of the crowds. Did I see the tree? Yeah, I don't know... maybe. Lego store? Nope... couldn't get in. So... was it worth it? Nah, we found other things with fewer people and had a great time. Trust me... Italy offers the amazing experience you have dreamed of in cities that are not the "OMG have you been to ________________!!!!!?!?!?!?!" Instagram-location. And driving is fine... just don't do it in the center of big cities. Google Maps is your friend. TBH, driving in Italy is purposeful. Know how to drive a stick, stay engaged and you will find it is more fun than driving here.
  8. Yup... some people are saying he will use the proceeds from the Puerto Rico sale to buy Hawaii. Apparently too many people in Puerto Rico speak Mexican.
  9. Yeah... they're so excited about having paid all this money to see a tiny dot on a stage. Weirdos.
  10. Its pure ignorance honestly and its negative people who take one bad experience and then extrapolate it. Its a fascinating city and, personally, the further you get way from the sestiere of San Marco, the better it gets. San Marco has amazing sights but it generally more crowded and more expensive with less value. Its a place worth exploring and getting lost (not hard)
  11. Yeah it was. Still remember... move move gooooo leave!?
  12. Yes. See Rita discussion.
  13. Hmmm... saw the latest rain forecast from the NWS... looks like it shifted
  14. This is the way... we go for 3 weeks. To say we have limited plans is an understatement. Save for a boat tour one day and a quick overnight near some friends in another town, our calendar is largely open. We do have plans related to a major sporting event... more on that later.
  15. It wasn't about sea level. Rita was a beast... "After entering the Gulf of Mexico, Rita rapidly intensified over the very warm waters of the loop current and within an environment of very weak vertical wind shear. Rita reached a peak intensity of category 5 with sustained winds of 180 mph (155 knots) and a minimum pressure of 895 millibars (26.43 inches) at 10 PM CDT September 21st. This low pressure makes Rita the strongest hurricane every recorded in the Gulf of Mexico, and 4th strongest in the Atlantic Basin. https://www.weather.gov/lch/rita_main It was heading towards Houston until about 20 hours before landfall and then it took that right turn into LA and hit as a Cat 3. We stayed home... I remember what a cluster it was but Rita was a massive hurricane.
  16. Awesome. Thank you. If anything peppers and basil stays. Shade cloth will keep things reasonable until we return
  17. I need some advice. I'm going to be out of town for an extended period of time during the heat of Central Texas summer. I have tomatoes and pepper plants and I'm thinking of just cutting back the tomato plants and then putting up shade cloth above the plants to protect them and peppers while I'm gone. I'll have some kind of sprinkler set up as a drip setup, but I'm thinking it's just easier to cut everything back. If the tomatoes survive they survive. Other option is to tear out the tomatoes because we're going into the hottest part of the summer. I'll still put up the shade cloth to protect the peppers and herbs and the drip system. Thoughts?
  18. WTF... the rumors of my demise are greatly exaggerated. Uh, I'm jetlagged... from California? Oh well... ChatGPT (Verse 1) Down in Austin town, where the stars shine bright, There's a legend folks talk about late into the night. With a twinkle in his eye and a hat on his head, Leslie took the stage, and the streets became his bed. (Chorus) Oh, Leslie, with your skirts so fine, You danced through the streets like a bottle of wine. You ran for Mayor with a heart so true, Though you didn't win, you left us all in awe of you. (Verse 2) He wore dresses and wigs, didn't care what they said, In a world of norms, he painted his own spread. With a feather boa 'round his neck, he'd strut his stuff, And in the city of weird, he couldn't get enough. (Chorus) Oh, Leslie, with your skirts so fine, You danced through the streets like a bottle of wine. You ran for Mayor with a heart so true, Though you didn't win, you left us all in awe of you. (Bridge) They say politics is serious, but Leslie knew better, He brought joy and laughter with every feather. He may not have won, but he sure did inspire, To be yourself, to dream big, and never tire. (Verse 3) Now Leslie's gone, but his spirit lives on, In every drag queen and king, in every break of dawn. So here's to Leslie, the Mayor of our hearts, In a city where weirdness is where the truest art starts. (Chorus) Oh, Leslie, with your skirts so fine, You danced through the streets like a bottle of wine. You ran for Mayor with a heart so true, Though you didn't win, you left us all in awe of you. (Tag) Oh Leslie, oh Leslie, you'll always be, The spark in our souls, wild and free.
  19. Elon does look intimidating, though... better supervillain vibe
  20. The demise of Leslie's death are greatly exaggerated
  21. Not only... they need to go after the liquor ads to really go bonkers. I went to a YMCA camp one year when I was in elementary school. First time I had really spent time away from my parents and I hated it. Went once and that was it. I remember a few things about camp... one was our counselor who was showing all of us how magazines use subliminal advertising to cause us to sin. Case in point... see this ice cube in this ad for Crow Royal? Yeah, ice cubes don't look like that... look at that cube... that's a demonic face there. See it? I kid you not. https://www.warc.com/newsandopinion/opinion/of-sex-and-ice-cubes-the-great-subliminal-advertising-scare/en-gb/2558
  22. Who wore it better? At least Bezos actually spent quite a bit of his childhood in Texas and is second cousins, once removed, with George Strait. Musk has his own relatives... https://www.newyorker.com/news/daily-comment/the-world-according-to-elon-musks-grandfather#:~:text=In the nineteen-thirties%2C he,than the people%2C should rule.
  23. Gotcha... that makes sense.
