I live in Sioux Falls, a city that has had strong growth for like 30 years. (We are the Austin of the nothern plains.)
City government gets most of its revenue from sales tax. 2025 budget was for 6% YoY growth. I presume that growth assumption was a rather pragmatic, as I see our government as pragmatic in general.
So we say January sales tax numbers this week. 6% growth budgeted. 0.1% actual. Just January. Folks just tightening up in anticipation of tariff inflation. Woof.
I have friends, college-educated professionals, who have gone all in on this. Historically we have kindly discussed/debated our views on politics and economy. This time we are not. Seems to me the results will be obvious by Labor Day and the best thing is to be quiet and let them witness in person. If the bad things we think will happen...happen, any rational man will recognize it. And any person who does NOT recognize it never will. No point in engaging in conversation then either.
College educated pilots. Illiterate belly gunners. Everyone in between. Every one of them was far more of a man than any of us here. Let’s move on to less serious topics.
