Arch Manning: Wearing Gold Hats and Firing Old Smokey
BurdineBandit replied to LTtxfan's topic in Football
Ding ding ding. Throwing Brooks out there in the middle of the game without any install practice was crazy, but obviously still better than Stroh. There was always a chance that as long as Brooks has some capability to learn and apply himself, that he would look much better against OU. Aside from learning the plays and calls and such over game week, just talking to Hutson and Goosby and getting their help in preparing and knowing what to do was going to make a huge difference. He definitely wasn't perfect against OU, but I agree, if he started against Sam Houston, he probably looks much better against Florida and helps to give us a chance. -
Had to take EOSE off of my watch list because I was too happy to triple my money a few months ago. That 3x could've been 7x, and possibly more, but I'm no longer watching it climb and pissing myself off. Profit is profit.

Spurs 2025 Off Season Thread - Popping Off
BurdineBandit replied to Mitch Cumsteen's topic in Basketball
I have seen maybe 15 minutes over two games of Kornet and damn I like the guy already. I had no idea he was so athletic and can actually move laterally. Seems like a few years since we've had a 5 that can move laterally. Harper looks great. I can't believe we still have Sochan and Fox still to unleash. This season is going to be fun. Just watching today was fun. Castle and Kornet and Wemby looked like beasts on Defense. -
Yep. You're describing that "athletic" thing that the youtube film guy was talking about earlier in the thread. It's interesting that you say he's "beaten" by physics, when there's guys that are (basically) Stroh's size all over the NFL. Their genetics and/or baseline athleticism "beats" physics right back. NFL O linemen are routinely 6'5 - 6'7, but, very few of them are unable to squat down and play/move from that squat position. If he can't do it, it's not necessarily something that can be learned at this age, imo. It is much easier to move a 6'0, 250 lb high school defensive tackle than a 6'3 - 300 lb *athletic* defensive lineman that has the strength and quickness to avoid his hands and rip through a shoulder. Being able to move your feet, while holding strength in the legs, is absolutely crucial. I'm not sure all the potential in the world is there. He's like a baseball player with 2/5 tools. He has *some* potential, but not sure it's enough. He needs flexibility (is the body able to squat down and stay there?), and athleticism (can he do so quickly and powerfully?). Being big is a baseline. I'd gladly take a 6'3" guard if he could stop the man in front of him.

I put a few bucks from my UUUU profits into WWR yesterday right before close. 24 hrs later it's up 50%. Is it almost stonking?

Same with Rich Reddick in COE. I was a part of his grad program a decade ago. He's great, but feel like the teeth of that program have been filed down since he left. I'm not sure how much influence they'll have on anything in this committee.

One Battle After Another, the next Paul Thomas Anderson film
BurdineBandit replied to mdmost's topic in Movies and TV
Just got back. 10/10. For 3 hours it never let up. Leo was great, Benicio was great, the daughter was great. The ending song coming after her grandmother said she comes from a long line of revolutionaries earlier in the movie was pretty cool. Nice tight knot on the "American Girl" being born of a distinctly Black experience. Leo was hilarious throughout. That scene before the dance was great. Him falling/failing to keep up with the carnales was also great. -
Maybe, but it's not hopeless. Compared to any other unit on the team, O line is also able to benefit from a puzzle piece or two. There's lots of cross training at IOL, and if a guy can play LT, usually he can switch over the RT easily. Getting a solid extra piece may mean a big difference in getting your 5 best guys on the OL and letting them develop now that you've assembled the puzzle. It's also much easier to deal with deficiencies like "this guy is a net positive in the running game, but struggles with pass blocking technique" vs. "this guy is 18 years old and just got manhandled by a 22 year old, 325 lb. monster". One of those can be mitigated easier than the other.

Taaffe is surrounded by 1-year mercenaries and all-SEC guys who we had to "restructure contracts" to keep. And others who were all-SEC preseason but have more game-killing penalties than game-tilting big plays, 5 games into the season. Barron did a lot for this program. Before him, Whittington did a lot for this program. I really like Moore and hoped he'd be that guy this year, but it just doesn't seem like he's quite the player Whittington was. Not sure where else to look for the fire. And this was being said during the Ohio State game. This isn't a new revelation. Seeing Arch sitting on the sidelines, only down 7, talking to nobody, nobody hyping him up.... It's worrying. This is basic competitor shit. If you're down by 7 and felt like you should be at least tied, you're on the sideline trying to pull out some fire from your teammates........ Or you're just waiting for it to be over.

Texas Football 2025 - Seven Win Steve Rides Again
BurdineBandit replied to closetojumping's topic in Football
It always seemed like the offense was the most likely to be a problem, but damn if I'm not completely deflated by our shit defensive performance. Our DT transfers looked like ACC players. Our All American linebackers get zero pressure. I don't know if Burke is still on the team. Guilbeau is always chasing down somebody who just burned him. Nobody to replace Mukuba 5 weeks into the season. -
Probably learning stupid TikTok dances with arch like they used to with Quinn
-
I'm kinda with you, but also.... Quinn had 3 NFL-ready receivers to throw to and an NFL TE. Arch has a poor man's Helm (the next tackle Endries breaks will be the first) and a bunch of JAGs at receiver. Even Wingo is clearly a third of the route runner any of Worthy, Mitchell or Golden were.

One of my early football memories is attending the Thanksgiving game where Creed performed at halftime. In the middle of their heyday and peak of their stardom. It's used as a meme now, and you can find the clips all over the internet for a cool little chuckle, but at 12-13 years old I fucking hated it. I had their CD on loop, so to hear the same mix and realize that they were half-assing a syncing I got pissed. I think that was when I found out that not all performances are live. It would certainly fit the bill of White America demanding artists that haven't had a hit in over two decades though. Back to the good ol' days or whatever.

I'm mostly with you on this, but I don't agree that the cause is so linear. Around the same time, and probably in the decade before, our own state government started to drastically cut funding for our state institutions, which caused them to try and find that money elsewhere (tuition). The state government decided along the way that higher education is no longer worth nearly as much of our state funding, and from there, dominoes started to fall. Everything you described also could be called "privatization". They handed over yet another public service to private control in order to line someone's pockets. Capitalism has been gut-deep in higher ed for a bit longer than 2003. I can probably give some leeway to the argument that university budgets have also inflated over the years, especially in construction & building upgrades and staff.... but there's definitely an argument to be had about it. I don't think slashing budgets offsets how fucked the rest of the balance has become. That's one of those things where I think it becomes a recruiting issue. You better keep up with the joneses if you want to continue to be called a "great" school and public ivy or whatever. But...... that was also a few UT presidents ago and before a regime took over.

Everything is a fucking shakedown to him. "Better access" to funding. Kiss the ring and daddy will let you set on his lap and give you a few dollars. Fucking disgusting. What a joke of an educational system we're going to have. International reputation for academic excellence? Ehhh, if God King says it's ok to teach, we'll teach it enthusiastically, otherwise, what is "knowledge" anyways. Smart people don't like him, so smart is actually dumb and education is gay.
