  1. doobie brothers and steely dan on sunday night. doobies were surprisingly good, vocals still sounded perfect. despite not having walter becker steely dan still sounded pretty much the same as the last couple times i've seen them. donald fagen's voice is fairly weak but he's got the back up singers carrying most of the load. all the musicians are still top notch.
  2. had the same thing happen at work about a year ago on a brand new cooler. ozarka said it happens fairly frequently, came out and replaced it like it was no big deal.
  3. the texas gentlemen at white horse. god damn, they tore it up and laid it down. dude on keys is a monster. played a lot of country-blues-funk-jams, they showed some serious range. tx jelly is a damn good album.
  4. yeah we had no problem getting up close. a lot of people actually started leaving about 20 mins into their set.
  5. i actually thought empire was the best song of the night. i also noticed there were several songs where he changed up the lyrics. definitely prefer seeing them in a small venue, but can't beat a free concert in zilker. been a long time since i've been to blues on the green...like since it was over by the rock wall. holy shit it's a lot bigger these days. when we got back to our bikes there were some people whose bikes had been stolen, and at least one bike with both wheels gone.

    Pink Floyd

i started reading nick mason's book last week. he manages to make somewhat interesting stories very boring.
  10. listening now, very good.
  11. pond at mohawk. australian psych band that shares some of the same members with tame impala. their earlier stuff is a little heavier with some good hooks, their more recent albums have been more pop/synth focused. i wish they would've played more old stuff, they really focused on the newer synth heavy songs. they looked, and to some degree sounded, like they were straight from the 80's. lead singer was very lively and had kind of a david bowie stage presence. had been wanting to see these guys for a while, missed them at sxsw back in 2012 and they haven't been back since. would see again.
  12. was a regular there for a while when they had the best selection in town. stopped going shortly after they moved to the new location. once the austin beer scene started taking off i quickly noticed that they had very few local taps. bartender said all new taps had to be approved by their corporate office, which was a hassle and took too long. about that time a bunch of new places started opening up around town and i found a new watering hole. patio at the old place was great though.
  13. i also watched it a couple weeks ago. was familiar with his music but didn't know his whole story. was pretty shocking how badly those movies fucked him up, music wise. it also didn't really address why he never told col. parker to fuck off. seems like he was pretty content with those movie paychecks rolling in. the little jam session for the 1968 special with him and his band sitting in a circle was good.
  14. all them witches, mastodon, primus at cota friday night. emptiest i've ever seen that place. lawn was closed off, upper seats were maybe 1/4 full and the lower seats and pit were mostly full. it's impossible to get to this shit venue by 7:00pm so we missed all but one song of all them witches. they sounded good. the sound for mastodon was very muddy. they played lots of stuff off the new album. i've come around on some of those songs, thought steambreather was really good. wish they could've played longer. the sound was great for primus. played 4 or 5 old songs then played the entire new album, which clearly nobody gave a shit about. it was basically a 7 song piss break, a fair number of people actually left at that point. then they played some more old tunes. they sounded great, even the new stuff had interesting moments, particularly with claypool on upright bass.
  15. just saw NIN is playing a festival in san antonio in the at&t center parking lot this September. a couple other decent bands playing. probably going to that because NIN, but god damn what a terrible venue.
  16. in 2011 during sxsw i saw jason isbell and trampled by turtles at swan dive. there were about 30 people there. they are too jamgrass for my taste but it was a good show.
  17. i don't remember seeing any listening stations anywhere, and yes there are vendors who only take cash.
  18. it's a good event, definitely worth going. unless you're looking for super rare stuff there's no reason to do the early entry, still plenty of great records available on saturday and sunday. take cash.

    Vinyl

polygondwanaland is an interesting record because they released all the manufacturing rights and encouraged fans/record labels to press their own version of the album. there are a shit ton of different versions out there.
  20. saw jack white last night at austin360/cota. it was a phone free show, they locked up phones in little neoprene pouches that you kept with you and then unlocked at the end of the show. i didn't want to deal with that shit so i left my phone in the car. played about 1/3 white stripes songs and the rest was his solo stuff, i think maybe there was 1 raconteurs song in there. his band consisted of a drummer, bass player, and 2 keyboard players. i thought the 2 keyboards, combined with his guitar tone, made the overall sound a little too heavy on the high end. he played about 20 different guitars over the course of the night. i'm not a big white stripes fan...i thought the full band treatment might change my mind on those songs but it didn't. thought the songs off the new album were a lot better live. he's clearly a talented guy and it was interesting watching them play so many different styles of music, there were moments of greatness but ultimately it left something to be desired.

i never really understood the mono debate until i listened to those beatles mono re-releases, damn they sound good. granted, abbey road isn't one of those as it was recorded in stereo.

the resurgence of vinyl is cool for new releases, but kind of sucks for buying used albums. i used to be able to pick up just about anything used for under $10...now that's a rare find.
  23. This Wheel's on Fire by Levon Helm is a pretty interesting read if you're into The Band.
  24. that dude is unbearable to listen to, and the main reason i skipped that set. i don't understand the fascination the black angels have with bjm.
