  1. We hired them to play for my wedding in havana. Such a great time.
  2. Lol astroturf? curious, why do you think that?
  3. I doubt few move back. Most just want to try to claim their old property as a vacation home. Even if the best outcome happens, it’s going to be a shit show for awhile.
  4. Actually a good point and that plays a huge part in this. Things went to shit when the USSR collapsed. They never had freedom, but they at least had enough food / supplies to have a good life and educate the population. it rebounded somewhat with VZ oil, now that is gone.
  5. Until recently they had two currencies. The local peso and the CUC, which is pegged to the US dollar. The peso was worthless. Everyone used the CUC for nongovernmental transactions.
  6. Keep in mind that the last thing the locals want/need are expats who fled in the 60s coming back to rule them. Sure the help will be valued, but there is still some mistrust/animosity between the two groups. The people who fled look down upon those who stayed and those who stayed few betrayed by those who left. im doing a bad job in explaining this, just know it’s all very complicated. cuba, unlike most 3rd world countries has one major thing going for it. The population is HIGHLY educated with engineers, doctors, etc. they can do a lot of this own their own. Just need resources and freedom. My greatest fear is that multinationals just come in and buy everything up from state actors / oligarchs and the locals are left out. Last thing we need is a wrecking ball to come out and old cities go down for modern holiday inns and Disney world. It’s a both very exciting and worrying time.
  7. Country folk make their own guns and ammo for hunting. For instance the cousin I was talking about upthread makes his on shotgun shells by melting car batteries for lead. It’s a crazy impressive setup. that said, they can’t win against the armed forces. Their own hope is to win the hearts/minds of the military over. what’s interesting is that the way their armed forces are setup is that if you don’t score high enough on testing when leaving high school you are drafted. So EVERYONE has close family members in the military. Hopefully this will keep the army from openly firing on protesters. Hell, most of them hate the government as well due to all the open corruption (even in small towns you see brand new amg benzos with government plates). the secret police is another thing though. Those fuckers are mean.
  8. ? No idea what other channels are doing. I don’t have foxnews. I stream via sling and my only 24/4 hour news channel is cnn. I was commenting on how the so called 24 hour news is showing preprogrammed shows instead of a major issue happening 90 miles from our boarder. No idea why you seem to be making it political.
  9. Cool fact. It’s a copy of the US Capitol . It also has statues of US presidents (surprisingly still standing)
  10. Yeah. Covid has been horrible. The official numbers are crap. The cities have me been under lockdown with armed patrols enforcing curfew. It has gotten so bad that the matriarch’s oldest had to “take a leave” from his job and move to havanna to take care of her. speaking of which. He is one smart dude. Had a full ride to MIT for electrical engineering, but the Cuban government last minute decided he was a flight risk and couldn’t go, and sent him to some prestigious university in Moscow. Life worked out. he runs the local electrical grid in the province next to havanna making a whopping 7 dollars a month. Laugh/cry
  11. That’s my fear. While it’s horrible now, it’s safe. I don’t want an Arab spring or Mexican narco style Civil war.
  12. Meanwhile cnn is has a show on talking about the history of sitcoms.
  13. For those that dont know, things have gotten BAD there. Getting close to the “dark days” post soviet union collapse. You get like one bag of rice a month if you are lucky. In the past this wasnt a big deal since they could buy supplies in the store from money sent from US kinfolk. Now the stores are empty. Zero bread, rice, basic staples. Zero medication. We have to send basic antibiotics and diapers to family via courier (matriarch of the family suffered from an undiagnosed stroke and is now bed ridden). Shit is bad. Im really worried about my little 2 year old nephew in havana. He is horribly underweight due to lack of food. we have tried to get him over, but his mom refuses to make the jump. Thankfully family in the small village can hunt for food (with home made shotguns and shells). They bring in duck hauls that would make a coonass blush.
  14. This could be the real deal. Got a call from family that there are protests in their small village, population roughly 100. This type of shit never happens outside the major cities. They havent seen unbridled open outrage like this before.
  15. All presidents and first family memebers should undergo routine audits. Hell, that should go for all federally elected officals.
  16. I wouldnt call it scorn, just confusion. They delayed their vaccination by over a month due to garbage info. but like you said, at least they have it
  17. See my edit. The entire thing is a shit show. No idea how we have made it covid free so far.
  18. Yep. Never would go. He isnt even very political. I would say a fourth of the people on the office refuse to get it oh and half who are vaccinated drove around looking for JJ even though the other vaccines were readily available. All because one of them “research the issue” and found JJ was the least likely to give you “the cancer” five years from now. one fucking took a day off to drive from clear lake to nola The entire thing is so confusing.
  19. One of my employee’s kid and wife got it from that. All unvaccinated. Fucker came to work and said he was late due to having to take care of sick family members. WTF. Told him to GTF out.
  20. 1. Not a fan of “monoliths”, eh? To each his own. 2. Did you just skip over the first three words of my post?
  21. moving it is fine, but, the date it was put up isnt completely random. It marks the 100 year anniversary of the battle… Plus the 1930s is still considered historical. We need more public art, not less.
  22. His facebook is open and as another poster said he talked about searching for and taking the JJ months ago. Way before he was sick. Recently he and his wife have posted about every stage of the sickness up until he died. assuming it is all a lie. Thats really involved. Especially the dying part.
  23. I mean, do you want me to call up his widow, who I have never met and ask her to send me a proof of vaccination for internet people? The day after he died Lol
