  1. Johnny is the greatest dumb blond to ever grace the little tv. My only beef is with Hawk -- the whole series is dumb but in a good way, but they are asking too much of the viewer on this guy. They just needed a slightly more physically imposing nerd with a few notches down on the mohawk. Something just basic Major League Soccer.
  2. Dang, you guys are harsh. While movies like Amores Perros and Birdman do some really interesting things and hold you spellbound, I found it helpful to look at The Revenant as simply a movie about bears and Indians and horses dropping into trees and how Montana might have been harsh back then. (At least that's what the first incredible scene kind of hinted at.) It's no more serious than Last of the Mohicans, except you trade the love interest for Tom Hardy in what is really kind of a comic role. Whether or not its "off the real story" doesn't really matter if you don't know what the "real story" is - advantage of not doing enough reading. And if you resent it just because it won best picture, I don't have a problem with someone saying Spotlight, Big Short, or Fury Road should have won, but it wasn't shocking. (I thought Fury Road had a bigger wow factor but Revenant was damn beautiful and impressive and pretty easy to appreciate if you aren't resentful of where it ranks.)
  3. Look, we are all pretty defensive about our Mexican directors. Don't poke the bear.
  4. Borges and Garcia Marquez would love Pan's Labyrinth. And Garcia Marquez would be the first to say that Pan isn't magical realism. As long as your ignoring recs, you should see Inarritu's Amores Perros as well.
  5. Well, if you're forced to watch another, maybe it should be the Devil's Backbone, which may be a bit more straightforward. I don't remember it, other than I think I liked it, and the reviews make it look like it may not insist upon itself as much as Shape and Pan. Final caveat. I don't root for Mexico to beat the US in soccer, but I root for Mexican directors to win movie awards. I'm pretty forgiving of movies by Mexicans.
  6. October: 10 Days that Shook the World (1927) Pretty appropriate for these days. Some beautiful shots. Early, Potomkin-ish Eisenstein. The horse on the bridge scene was crazy. Were people more interesting looking back then, or does bad dental hygiene render interesting faces? Man had the hair.
  7. Don't be an ass, man. Westlake is brutalizing them.
  8. kinda like Jake Spoon getting caught up with the man burners.
  9. I was kind of taken in by the Spanish Civil War angle as well as the links to "Spirit of the Beehive". With those backdrops I kind of gave in to the fantasy aspects of the film (child's perspective) and just though he took a risk and it worked perfectly. The "not out of 2nd gear" is an interesting take -- it certainly didn't have a big ending and that is part of why I liked it. I didn't see it at all as half baked - I think Del Toro baked it just as much as he wanted.
  10. I really had trouble with these movies, but for some reason even though I didn't get it, I really liked l'ecclise. Maybe it was the Alain Delon added cool. The visuals, especially one scene near the end were very striking.
  11. I think you underrate both Pan's Labyrinth and a Serious Man pretty significantly, especially Pan's. I wasn't a huge fan of Shape of Water, but mostly because it didn't come close to doing what Pan's Labyrinth did.
  12. It's no L'ecclise, but okay
  13. I guess all of us pussies need to take the loss of Sam.
  14. I think because people are lazy and stupid. (Not targeting OP, I guess it is closer to Bond than Memento).
  15. Pretty damn great. One of the advantages of never giving much of a damn about plot is that when someone is throwing something at you that is confusing, such as Nolan always does, I just give in and accept it. This movie clarified for me why I'm not necessarily a fan of the kinds of standard issue fight scenes of the past few decades. These at least had something interesting to think about/look at. I looked over Nolan's list of films and although based on the reviews I'm in the minority, I'm liking his newer stuff. His last three (this, Dunkirk and Interstellar) have a particular tone and rhythm that to me is just perfect. (From the first moment this was a Nolan movie, and not a "Bond movie". Which for me was good because I hate Bond movies.)
  16. (Even though we just won.)
  17. I guess no one really took to my "Fire Joe Biden" thread...
  18. Would open shipley's box to see if there was a cinnamon twist....
  19. Or Henry B. Gonzalez.
  20. That's what she said.
  21. I realize I'm prob. the oldest guy on this board, but "cosplaying" is just a shitty word. I'm not sure why, but it makes me grouchy. Maybe if I had done all the Dungeons and Dragons stuff that you guys did in the day, or played quiddich, I might abide it. Ranks down there with "moist" and "inquinal".
