  1. Oh, I get it. There are special rules. That sounds like the same "rules for thee but not for me" BS the right uses. If you can't see the hypocrisy, that's on you not me.
  2. Sounds like you inferred something that wasn't there. I said doesn't infringe on someone's rights, not "doesn't negatively impact" others. Big difference. Also, I have not said the work Bruce since my first post, and it was in response to ...checks notes... Troph's wife posting a Tweet/X post saying Jenner voted to be called Bruce. Since then, I have used the terms Jenner and They, so no, I haven't been blasting "polka music" ...which is Czech, by the way (meaning little Polish girl) not German. The German equivalent is Oom-pah which you noted. But I digress... I've spent the rest of my posts differentiating between generalized slurs, IE N-word, T-word, R-word, etc, versus individualized slurs. Which somehow you put in quotes as, "Well, she's not the intended target of my insult". While it's true I am NOT, nor would I refer to Troph by her dead name (unless she too voted for Trump), I simply don't see the correlation between disrespecting an individual (Jenner) and disrespecting a group (Trans people). I have a "dead" last name, so I might have a little more perspective than you. I was adopted by my stepdad when I was 7, but I never felt comfortable with his last name, in fact, I hated it. When I was 19, I changed it, but some people still referred to me by my previous name. Sometimes as a habit, but other times as an insult complete with the not so nice, play on words that my former last name afforded. But I never thought they were insulting all adopted kids who didn't like their adopted last names. Frankly, it didn't even bother me. It was a "them" problem, not a me problem. Just as you can, and probably do, view my opinion as a me problem. Which is fine, and your right. I simply don't care. My responsibility in life isn't to tip toe around other people's feelings. I try to be nice to people who are nice to me, but I'm not going to bend over backwards to spare people's feelings. If that's being an asshole, the I'm an asshole and I'm fine with that. Not everyone is going to like me all the time. I agree with many on here about a lot of things, this just isn't one of them. I feel like we've become a culture of whiners who get offended too easily. There is plenty of bad shit heading the trans community's way if certain people (people Jenner voted for) get their way. Jenner being called by a dead name shouldn't be high on that list of concerns. There's a saying I learned in kindergarten that we might want to refer to from time to time ...sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me.
  3. Last post on the subject, but what the fuck are you talking about? Jenner is an individual, not a group. Elon has Asperger's, and likely another personality disorder, but calling him Elmo, or Nazi, or any other derogatory term is a reflection on him, not every person suffering from mental health issues. If you called him the R word that would be different. Clearly there is a disconnect in our ways of thinking, which is fine. If we all agreed on everything, life would be pretty boring.
  4. And your point? Am I supposed to be ashamed that I suffer from a mental health issue? Stigmatizing people with mental health issues is why many are afraid to admit they have them. I'm not ashamed of it
  5. The fact that you can't see the difference between the two scenarios is a "you" problem, not a me problem. Individual vs collective. Truth is I'm not a particularly empathic person so how other people perceive things isn't really a concern of mine. It's a character flaw, to be sure, but it's not something I have control over. I've actually been diagnosed with mild psychopathy ...and yes, it is measured on a spectrum.
  6. That's a different topic in my mind. There shouldn't be people who are able to work yet can't make enough to pay taxes. That falls under the "regulatory" responsibility of the government. I believe in a maximum wage. Those who can't work, should be taken care of by the state. IMO, our homeless problem can be largely attributed to lack of funding for mental institutions, and income disparity. Both of which would be taken care of in Dixon's Republic. Does it say "Not Applicable" now?
  7. Yeah, basically I just don't like paying taxes for imperialism, and a never-ending drug war.
  8. Then I should be arrested.
  9. Why shouldn't I? I've paid my taxes just like the idiot gun owner who accidentally shoots himself in the foot while cleaning his gun.
  10. Their messaging has definitely shifted that direction in the past 10-15 years, but the proof hasn't shown up in the pudding when they've been in office. Frankly, I don't trust either political party to actually change the status quo. Too much money at stake.
  11. Yes, once the German Polka Music reaches my ears you are violating my rights. But having a volume, or time rule is different from saying you can't ever listen to German Polka in your home at a level that doesn't reach my house. Just as if I use drugs in my house, it's none of your business, but if I use drugs in my house then come bang on your door at 4am, while high, is a violation of your rights.
  12. I don't know. I don't dislike government. In fact I think government has a vital role in setting the rules of the game. That said, I think that governments tend to overstep that role. Perfect world: Government provides common defense ...not "national interests", but legit, if we face aggression at home, we defend ourselves. Government provides infrastructure (inclusive of utilities) Government provides healthcare Government provides education Government provides regulatory environment Government protects the borders and issues visas Government sets tax rates Government sets basic laws that 99% of sane people can agree on (IE no killing other people, no stealing from people, No diddling kids, etc) Then... Government stays the fuck out of my life
  13. I guess this is the area I need education on, the founding principles of libertarianism aren't based on anarchy, or no state at all. I just feel like the caricature of libertarianism has superseded the actual philosophy. Maybe a new term is needed for what I consider libertarian.
  14. But isn't this true of any social arrangement? The libertarian concept I took from the above definition doesn't preclude taxation ... Anyway, I understand the argument of simplistic, but I think all systems of government and economics suffer from the same fate when introduced to human nature. I'd just like a system where the government is designed to take care of the citizens basic needs but no laws governing morality that doesn't infringe on anyone else's rights. IE murder, theft, etc.
  15. How so? All my retirement savings are in the stock market. Not trying to be argumentative, I just want to learn.
  16. I can appreciate that, but IMO, reverting to someone's given name as opposed to their preferred name and calling someone the N word isn't in the same ballpark. If someone were to say that Jenner should be called the "T" word, then that would an apt comparison. That's not what's happening in this case. Jenner's voting and vocal support of the anti-trans movement has voided the respect required to be called by a preferred name. Just as I might call some other fascist asshole Dick even though I know they want to by Richard. I don't have the energy, nor the desire to cater to fascist fee-fees
  17. I've seen this sentiment a lot on Surly. Can someone explain what aspects of libertarianism are in opposition to having a job and a retirement account? I'm talking about definitional libertarianism, not the brand exhibited by the rightwing nutjobs that claim to be libertarian but are really just pro-gun, Evangelical Christian, MAGAts. Just curious, because when I see the following definition, from Wikipedia, it resonates with me. Thanks in advance
  18. Finally, some good news. lol
  19. Or...and hear me out, maybe I "misread" your tone because you're one of the most consistent assholes on the site. You can't even take a fucking compliment without being a dick.
  20. This is not about name calling. For example, if a black person votes for the confederacy, I'm not going to lose sleep when he/she is forced into slavery. When a Latino votes for Trump, I'm fine if he or his family get deported. There's only so many times I'm willing to warn someone that the stove is hot before I lose interest if they get burned. I'm not here to conflate the entire trans community with one person, nor am I mad at that person.
  21. Well, technically neither was the 80's, but how many of us were on it. I guarantee I was active on the internet before you. I was doing War Games shit in the early 80's using an acoustic coupler. And I was one of 5 people in UT's ACT lab starting in 1992 coding in Unix and HTML to build webpages. Hell, I blew out the UT server posting a clip of Stonie Clark in 1994. Who the fuck cares if the AAS had an online forum in 1997, less than 20% of the country had Internet access, so if you want to be a pedantic prick, as usual, go ahead, but you know what the fuck I meant by pre-Internet ...and a message board isn't it.
  22. Thanks for the clarification about Brock. The years start to blend together after a quarter century.
  23. I've followed Texas recruiting pretty closely back then (IE used to go to all the recruiting meetups/events, subscribed to the newsletters, interned in the sports department at KXAN, etc.) but don't recall anyone saying he was too short. Of course that was pre-internet, and I also remember assuming Major Applewhite was black, and that we only recruited him to try to get Travis Minor.
  24. Are we sure that's not revisionist history? That's the same year we recruited Applewhite, and he wasn't exactly a giant. Plus, didn't we also go after Brock Berlin that year? He was also around 6ft, IIRC. Was Brees highly rated? I honestly don't remember hearing much about him back then.
