  4. Michigan opening their pocketbooks more... Alabama RB Justice Haynes transferring to Michigan Max Olson, ESPN Staff WriterJan 3, 2025, 05:46 PM ET Alabama transfer running back Justice Haynes has signed with Michigan, the school announced Friday. Haynes, the No. 3 running back in ESPN's transfer rankings, finished as Alabama's third-leading rusher with 448 yards on 5.7 yards per carry and 7 touchdowns as a sophomore. He'll have two more seasons of eligibility with the Wolverines. The 5-foot-11, 210-pound back from Buford, Georgia, started six games in his second year with the Crimson Tide after rushing for 168 yards and two scores as a freshman. Haynes was the No. 24 overall player in the ESPN 300 for 2023. He'll join a Michigan backfield that must replace the production of seniors Kalel Mullings and Donovan Edwards, who combined for 1,537 rushing yards and 16 touchdowns in 2024. Michigan does return freshman back Jordan Marshall, who rushed for 100 yards on 23 carries in the Wolverines' 19-13 victory over Alabama in the Reliaquest Bowl on Dec. 31. Haynes did not play for either team in the bowl game. Michigan has added eight transfer signees following its 8-5 season under first-year coach Sherrone Moore. The Wolverines are also bringing in quarterback Mikey Keene (Fresno State), wide receiver Donaven McCulley (Indiana) and offensive lineman Brady Norton (Cal Poly) to help bolster an offense that averaged 22 points per game this season, which ranks 113th in FBS.

FBD The Texas defense had been on the field so long in the Peach Bowl, the Longhorns were darn near worn out. Arizona State’s Cam Skattebo had shaved the unit down to a nub with his bruising style. When overtime began, the Sun Devils could sense an upset brewing in the College Football Playoffs. That’s when safety Andrew Mukuba yelled at cornerback Jahdae Barron to rally the troops. “I told Jahdae, man, you the leader, bro. You the leader of this team,” Mukuba said. “Bring everybody together and pick the defense up. Man, because the energy was low.” In double overtime, the Sun Devils reached the 10-yard line and were moving at a solid clip. Then on third-and-8, ASU quarterback Sam Leavitt looked left and threw a ball for Melquan Stovall. Mukuba read the play, jumped the route and made the game-clinching interception that sealed a 39-31 win in the Peach Bowl. This was the moment the Austin LBJ product dreamed about when he transferred back home from Clemson. Mukuba’s fifth interception of the season was easily his biggest as a Longhorn and probably the biggest of his collegiate career. It was a stunning way to cap his eight-tackle performance. “I mean, I’ve been saying this the whole year, man, this year feels like a movie for me,” Mukuba said. “You name the guys in the room, and it feels like this whole thing was scripted for me, coming home, playing my best ball, helping the team." “You know what happened today? Just everything, everything in general, just feel like a movie. And I'm just thankful for the opportunities I'm getting, and just thankful overall.” The Longhorns went into the game respectful of Skattebo’s skills were “as advertised,” Texas coach Steve Sarkisian said. “He got stronger, it felt like. You could see he was fatigued too.” Skattebo finished with 284 total yards and three touchdowns combined from running, receiving and throwing the ball. He was a huge reason the Sun Devils dominated time of possession (37:54) and went 10-for-24 on third down. ASU knew Skattebo was getting in position to take down Texas, too. Maybe the Devils also sensed the Horns were worn down at the end. “We were telling everybody whatever it takes, whatever it takes to get the job done,” Mukuba said. “Street fight mentality. Go out there and fight. You’re fighting, don’t stop, don’t quit. And obviously you see the results.” Mukuba’s interception changed everything. Suddenly, the whole sideline was flying high. The Horns are soaring straight into the CFP semifinals. Barron was named the game’s defensive MVP for his team-high 11 tackles. Safety Michael Taaffe had 10 tackles and two pass break-ups. Mukuba, Anthony Hill Jr. and Liona Lefau all had eight tackles each. “We got the game-winning interception,” Mukuba said. “But it all started with Jahdae, getting those guys together, talking to those guys, lifting those guys up and telling them you got to pick this energy up. So it really started with him.”

  11. Kenny Dillingham was rewarded on the eve of Arizona State's biggest game in recent memory. The Arizona State head coach has agreed to a five-year extension to remain in Tempe ahead of its matchup with Texas in the quarterfinals of the College Football Playoff, ESPN reported Tuesday. While the exact value of the contract wasn't revealed, Dillingham's contract will make him one of the highest-paid coaches in the Big 12 and will give him a "pathway" to extend his contract to 10 seasons, ESPN added in its report. Dillingham, an Arizona State alum, has quickly turned around his alma mater in just two seasons. The 34-year-old coached the Sun Devils to a Big 12 title in 2024 after they were picked to finish last in the conference in the preseason media poll. Its dominant win over Iowa State in the Big 12 Championship Game helped Arizona State secure a first-round bye in the College Football Playoff before taking on Texas in the Peach Bowl on New Year's Day. The former Oregon offensive coordinator was the youngest head coach in the FBS when he took over a struggling Arizona State program last year. The Sun Devils were hit hard by injuries during his first season while playing with the cloud of an NCAA investigation into recruiting practices by former coach Herm Edwards. The uber-enthusiastic Dillingham pushed all the right buttons this season, leading a team that won six straight games into the CFP for the first time. Dillingham made a shrewd move by landing quarterback Sam Leavitt out of the transfer portal — among others — and has fully utilized running back Cam Skattebo, who finished fifth in the Heisman Trophy vote. At 11-2, Arizona State has its most wins in a season since 1996. That was also the last time it outright won a conference, taking home the Pac-10 title that year. The extension for Dillingham would, seemingly, set up Arizona State to continue to be a power in the Big 12 after a successful first year in the conference. Dillingham's extension will also have an increased commitment to his coaching staff, according to ESPN. Prior to the extension, Dillingham was earning a $4.05 million base salary. But Arizona State's surprise season has helped him earn over $2.5 million in bonus money. He could earn $200,000 in bonus money if Arizona State beats Texas in the Peach Bowl. Dillingham gave away part of that bonus money during the regular season, donating $200,000 to members of his support staff.
