  1. The Nenana River to the East The house is on the river North of the highway The cabin is about a half mile from the river 3 miles South of the highway
  2. Slowly We’re really in no hurry, so I’m taking my time to get it done right Mrs. Moose wants hardwood floors. I’ve never attempted anything like that, so I’m learning as I go Saving the bathroom for last. It only has a shower stall. The Mrs. wants a tub. Gotta demo everything , frame the tub in and tie it into the plumbing. Then tile everything. I’ve never laid tile before either so I’ll learn. Plus we’re dealing with yet another wildfire in the neighborhood right now. The Bear Creek fire if anyone is interested. About a mile away from both the cabin and the house. Luckily still on the other side of the river
  3. Nope. Just an iPhone. Bear hanging out on the side of the highway doing bear things. Fairly uncommon to catch them like that, but you see them from time to time.
  4. I admit I’m uniquely prepared for what’s coming It wasn’t the driving force in my quest for a simpler existence, but it’s always been in the background
  5. We will still have our circuses It’s how they’ve controlled the masses for centuries Nothing is new
  6. Bingo I’m ready to watch it all burn down and hopefully make it to see what becomes of the ashes
  7. I don’t want to get all Brisket up in here, but that is what it is gonna take. The die has been cast. The only way we’re getting out of this is with the price of blood. I’d rather it come sooner rather than later.
  8. Exercise your Second Amendment rights.
  9. It’s not a big house…1700 sq ft, one bedroom, one bath. Built in 1989. One owner, everything was original. We gutted the inside. Installed a new septic system, replaced all plumbing with pex, installed a filter and water softener. New pressure tank and hot water heater. New cabinets and countertops, all new electrical and plumbing fixtures. New flooring throughout. All new appliances. It will get a new metal roof and new deck this summer. It needs new exterior paint. The previous owner replaced the boiler system 2 winters ago. Logistics can be a bitch. Fairbanks is 80 miles away, so you make sure your lists are up to date.
  10. My legacy will be the shitstick story 😂 Mainly outside shitter. We still live at the cabin. After 15 years of it, I prefer that lifestyle. My wife does too. Having our own private amenities have been very nice as I approach my mid 50’s though. A regular shower is a treat that most of us take for granted. Plus, we’re renovating it ourselves and we work at stoners pace. My wife is having fun decorating. I’m in the process of staining and sealing all the crown molding she decided on. The cabin is the cabin. Not much she can do with a 400 sq ft clubhouse.
  11. Nah, not about me. Appreciate the check in though. I’ve regressed to full on lurker mode. Life happens and I needed a break. My father died (not a big loss, he was an asshole of the highest order). We bought a house on 15 acres about 3 miles from the cabin and I’ve been immersed in renovating. I think it would have been easier to just build new. Mom is having some health issues back in Texas and we’re prepping for her possibly having to move up here so we can care for her on a daily basis. We promised her she would never be in an institution. It’s been nice having a place of our own to do laundry, take showers, and haul water to the cabin. Neither of us want to live there, so we are going to Air BnB it until we need it for either Mom or ourselves.
  12. She’ll probably say no. But what if she says yes? Gotta shoot that shot
  13. We're having one of the mildest starts to winter I can remember. Already into November and we haven't been below zero yet. Temps have been in the single digits to lower 40's. Only about 6 total inches of snow. I'm sure the hammer will drop soon.
  14. I very rarely carry a gun on my person when I’m not out in the woods, but with all the nut bags around here I’ll be packing for a few weeks no matter who wins.
  15. Mark was unique to put it mildly. Crazy substance abuse problems. He stayed out there alone to keep away from the temptation is what my theory always was. It wasn't out of the ordinary for him to go black for a year at a time. Dude was always nice to me and my wife the few times we ran into him on the trails. Quick to introduce himself and shake your hand. To quote Vincent Vega, "It would of been worth them doing it just so I could of caught them doing it."
  16. My wife and I were married in Fiji. On our wedding certificate she is listed as a "spinster." I still give her shit about that after 20 years.
  17. Yeah, that’s what pissed me off so much about that incident. The plow truck was parked up on the highway at a gravel pit when we had to evacuate due to a fire. There were some meth head squatters in the area at the time and I’m positive they’re the ones who tried to steal the truck. If it was back at my place, it wouldn’t have been touched. The squatters stayed up around the highway and stole mail out of mailboxes and such. They didn’t venture back into the woods. They knew better than to do that.
  18. Actually, in a way it does. It breaks down like this…Woodsies, as they are called, are their own tribe. There are fringe woodsies like me and my wife. I have a steady job, but we live woodsie. We are in the same “neighborhood,” which stretches 20 to 25 miles off the highway. I know of them and they know of us. Most of them piece it together as they go. PFDs are mailed out in October, so they are flush with cash right now. They truly live old school…you can smell a true woodsie Anyway, they sorta keep track of each other. When the woodsie grapevine finally figured out no one had heard from Mark, that’s when the wellness check was called in His cabin was raided once the body was cleared. Things weren’t necessarily “stolen,” people have dibs on things around here. We have dibs on some of our buddy Bobby’s stuff, and vice versa. People know it What’s awesome about the neighborhood is that there is zero theft. We don’t lock our cabin or our garage. We leave keys in the vehicles and equipment. I don’t even think about it anymore
  19. Ted Kaczynski would fit it just fine around here. Let me tell you about my neighbor Ken. I have no idea what his last name is. We've lived in our cabin about 14 years. I've seen Ken twice. Only ever spoken to him once, and it was a very weird conversation. My wife saw him for the first time last winter. It was like seeing Bigfoot for her. Ken is nuttier than squirrel shit, but he keeps to himself and doesn't cause me any problems. So Ken is alright by me. I have no idea how he lives alone back there, but he does. We had another neighbor named Mark who was also a hermit. No one had seen or heard a word from him in a couple of years, so a wellness check was called into the Troopers. They found his badly decomposed body on the floor of his cabin. They figured he had been dead for over a year. I expect to hear a similar story about Ken one of these days.
