  1. Yeah, after seeing this replayed 100 times on the news, I was thinking, he spent his literal last breaths being a snarky, sarcastic asshole. No debating, just being a dick. Not celebrating his death, not mourning it either.
  2. Supertramp founder/co-lead singer. Not gonna lie, huge Supertramp fan. Tough to pin them down, they kind of straddled a line between prog/art rock/pop. Just made some damn good music. Not a rock-star voice, but I always enjoyed his songs more than Roger Hodgson's, maybe due to the piano/keyboard, Rick's songs just seemed a little more down to earth (not as preachy, maybe?). Someone else can post the biggies, Goodbye Stranger, Bloody Well Right. I'm gonna post of my personal favorite deeper cuts. Rest in peace sir Starting out with maybe my favorite song of Rick's.. then again it could be this another day, it might be this one all the falsetto vocals on Supertramp songs, that's Rick too
  3. nsiap
  4. This guy is a pretty fun watch and tests all the new snacks when they come out
  5. Took a little digging and some help from my brother's friends, but it is a Zorlac skateboard logo, but it was co-opted by a punk band from Florida, "This is a Pipe Bomb", here is the orig logo:
  6. HEB lunch special today (I already ate half of it, I’m not some chirpy bird)
  7. Thanks for the heads up. Devo has been teasing a lot of videos on their facebook feed, they are restoring them to hi-res.
  8. Could probably go in a different thread, but I think it tangentally relates, and gives some good insight on the current state of the business: Coupland Dancehall Closing
  9. Great album (love the Hummel, one of my favorite pieces to play, first movement anyway, although Mr. Crisara made me play the third movement for a jury one year, holy hell, I suck at trills...). This one and Hot House Flowers I listened to a lot in college. Just noticed Wynton is coming to Austin in November, might have to check my calendar for that one (and Herb is coming in January, good couple of months for the trumpets).
  10. My aunt had this album and loaned it to my mom when I was about 7 years old. We had a stereo in the living room and I would get up on Sunday morning and just grab a record and listen to it. Some things, like Pink Floyd's Ummagumma, a 6 year old just cannot comprehend. But when I put this one on, I knew I liked it.
  11. Standards? We have no standards here. Post away.
  12. And some Herb. Whipped Cream gets all the talk for the album cover, but I think Going Places was their peak, that album is just about perfect. This is nothing technical, but it just glides along, and I love that held-out note at the end.
  13. Now some early 80's Brit-pop. Nick was the lead singer for Haircut One-Hundred. This whole album is really great, very horn-oriented as opposed to they prevailing synths at the time, very soulful (as in blue-eyed Brit soul...)
  14. Some more funky stuff
  15. Thanks to everybody for posting, I've "learned" a lot of cool shit here, got some new bands to check out. I'm gonna post some more as individual posts as to try to keep this thread from bogging down too much (as far as loading all these links...) First up, some funk outta Detroit City
  16. I'm sure most of you who studied under Mr. Crisara know that he also played on Paul McCartney's "Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey" but did NOT play the solo, that was Marvin Stamm.
  17. I Wish kicks so much ass. I love on the chorus, the first 3 brass hits are on the downbeat, but then that 4th one is on the previous last 16th beat, like a punch in the chest, my favorite part of the whole song.
  18. I almost made that the thread title but figured hardly anyone would get it
  19. As an offshoot from the Chuck Mangione thread. Post your favorites, jazz, pop, rock, classical, whatever. Share any stories if you want. First up, always loved the break at 1:18 or so Nextt up, I mentioned this one in the Chuck thread. I remember, 1980, my mentor Willie Streider , he as a senior at Sealy when I was a freshman, took me under his wing, we drove up to Sam Houston in Huntsville for a district-all state tryouts clinic, driving through the pine trees on a rainy morning and he put this tape on. Blew me away, still does. Willie (Will as he goes by now) made all-state, went to UH and then became the long-time trumpet instructor at Texas Tech, retired a couple of years ago. Alan Parsons songs always had some killer french horn lines. I actually wanted to play french horn but when I started band (5th grade, do any bands start that early anymore?) in Hempstead, they didn't offer it, just cornet or trumpet. Wanted a cornet but trumpet was cheaper, and we were poor, so there you go. Another one with some great horn runs..
  20. 3C. Haven't touched a 7C since maybe 10th grade. Well maybe during marching season, but definitely not since college. Had a Schilke something something at one point, but it was too shallow as well.
