  1. Could probably go in a different thread, but I think it tangentally relates, and gives some good insight on the current state of the business: Coupland Dancehall Closing
  2. Great album (love the Hummel, one of my favorite pieces to play, first movement anyway, although Mr. Crisara made me play the third movement for a jury one year, holy hell, I suck at trills...). This one and Hot House Flowers I listened to a lot in college. Just noticed Wynton is coming to Austin in November, might have to check my calendar for that one (and Herb is coming in January, good couple of months for the trumpets).
  3. My aunt had this album and loaned it to my mom when I was about 7 years old. We had a stereo in the living room and I would get up on Sunday morning and just grab a record and listen to it. Some things, like Pink Floyd's Ummagumma, a 6 year old just cannot comprehend. But when I put this one on, I knew I liked it.
  4. Standards? We have no standards here. Post away.
  5. And some Herb. Whipped Cream gets all the talk for the album cover, but I think Going Places was their peak, that album is just about perfect. This is nothing technical, but it just glides along, and I love that held-out note at the end.
  6. Now some early 80's Brit-pop. Nick was the lead singer for Haircut One-Hundred. This whole album is really great, very horn-oriented as opposed to they prevailing synths at the time, very soulful (as in blue-eyed Brit soul...)
  7. Some more funky stuff
  8. Thanks to everybody for posting, I've "learned" a lot of cool shit here, got some new bands to check out. I'm gonna post some more as individual posts as to try to keep this thread from bogging down too much (as far as loading all these links...) First up, some funk outta Detroit City
  9. I'm sure most of you who studied under Mr. Crisara know that he also played on Paul McCartney's "Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey" but did NOT play the solo, that was Marvin Stamm.
  10. I Wish kicks so much ass. I love on the chorus, the first 3 brass hits are on the downbeat, but then that 4th one is on the previous last 16th beat, like a punch in the chest, my favorite part of the whole song.
  11. I almost made that the thread title but figured hardly anyone would get it
  12. As an offshoot from the Chuck Mangione thread. Post your favorites, jazz, pop, rock, classical, whatever. Share any stories if you want. First up, always loved the break at 1:18 or so Nextt up, I mentioned this one in the Chuck thread. I remember, 1980, my mentor Willie Streider , he as a senior at Sealy when I was a freshman, took me under his wing, we drove up to Sam Houston in Huntsville for a district-all state tryouts clinic, driving through the pine trees on a rainy morning and he put this tape on. Blew me away, still does. Willie (Will as he goes by now) made all-state, went to UH and then became the long-time trumpet instructor at Texas Tech, retired a couple of years ago. Alan Parsons songs always had some killer french horn lines. I actually wanted to play french horn but when I started band (5th grade, do any bands start that early anymore?) in Hempstead, they didn't offer it, just cornet or trumpet. Wanted a cornet but trumpet was cheaper, and we were poor, so there you go. Another one with some great horn runs..
  13. 3C. Haven't touched a 7C since maybe 10th grade. Well maybe during marching season, but definitely not since college. Had a Schilke something something at one point, but it was too shallow as well.
  14. Out having a couple of brews, when I get home I’ll start a brass thread for all us band geeks…. No woodwinds allowed!
  15. Ah yes, Tom, another TA of mine, cool
  16. Went to school with Craig, nice guy. Also had Bob Cannon as my TA one year.
  17. Yeah, I mentioned it upthread
  18. Thanks for the heads up, I will definitely check that out
  19. No I just meant that once in a while a song would come from somewhere other that where you would normally expect, in this case a Billy Joel song, that had a killer trumpet solo (2 actually)...
  20. God damn you. He's coming to Austin, he better not! (Side note, what a glorious time that was for trumpet players, Herb, Maynard, Chuck, Chicago, BS&T, EW&F-I remember one year at jr high band camp, yeah I know, at TLC in Seguin, some guy in our dorm had the sheet music to "Got To Get You Into My Life" with the trumpet parts, we all made copies on those old xerox machines with the super slick copy paper, still have it tucked away somewhere.. even outliers like the Freddie Hubbard solo on "Zanzibar" and Singers Unlimited, check out their version of "Sweet Georgia Brown" if you've never heard it, killer...)
  21. Just saw that as well, yeah, very cool. That was always the true end of summer for me, catching the DCI finals on PBS.
  22. Dammit. Wore this LP out back in the day. As an up and coming trumpet player, Maynard and Chuck were on my turntable constantly, trying (and usually failing) to play along. Rest in peace sir.
  23. Not sure how the first one relates, but I KNOW how this one relates
