Revisiting the Mangalica chops. I was inspired by this guy’s video:
I did something similar. Simple sear, starting them off in a cold pan over the fire to render the fat. Then seared on each side. Instead of a brown butter sauce, I finished them with a bath of butter, rosemary, and garlic and then added a compound garlic-scallion butter. They were pretty much perfect. Because of the fat and marbling you can and should take them at least to medium. Searing the edge crispy was genius. Sides are unimportant but prosciutto and parmesan stuffed mushrooms and a baked sweet potato.

Russia is also on a timer due to the muddy season. If they are going to invade, it’s got to be this month.
There’s that, and there’s the fact that I think somewhere in the area of 60 percent of Russia’s available Battalion Tactical Groups are deployed to the border area. There are naval assets from the Baltic and Pacific. These units can’t stay forward deployed out there forever, it isn’t sustainable. You’re coming up to “move them or use them” territory.
On the information side— I can’t overstate how bad the messaging is from the separatist leader, who is 100 percent controlled by Moscow. He is claiming that they uncovered 130 mass graves of old people and children murdered by Ukrainians. He’s said the situation on the Line of Contact is so devolved that they may need to request Russian help and that they expect it to come. This is not deescalation or even a holding pattern. It’s escalation.

yeah, this is big. I said before I grew up in Embassies and they never want to evacuate everyone. Also seeing the Russians are doing the same with their facilities in the Ukraine.
How do we walk this back @956 Worldwide?
Yes, that’s what RIA Novosti says, it is Russia state controlled media and so it would be unlikely to report something the Kremlin didn’t want reported.
Everything I have seen reported is that the belief is that Putin has assembled an invasion force. They are not there for drills or intimidation, they are there to invade. That said, there’s also a belief that a final “go” has not been decided and that it is Putin himself who will decide it. I do not see anything at all that would turn this around save an announcement from Putin himself that the option was off the table, and a rapid drawdown of units from near Ukraine and Belarus. The past few days have seen the opposite of that. And I don’t think a diplomatic breakthrough is hovering, absent a complete capitulation on every one of the demands Russia sent around.
Even then, I think Putin has decided to, at one time or another in the near future, either incorporate much more of Ukraine into Russia or install his own preferred leader by force. No matter what accommodation he is offered.

Reports that the U.S. embassy will fully evacuate. A complete drawdown of a major facility like that is an expensive, complicated, logistical and security nightmare. It’s a last resort move that is pushed against at every step, this is not cheap signaling.

The burden of proof is always on the one making the assertion. I didn’t see anyone drinking donkey semen or donkey urine. I saw actors drinking fluids they called donkey semen and donkey urine. That which asserted without evidence may be dismissed without evidence. Show me one continuous shot of the donkey urinating and that urine going into a person’s mouth. Otherwise I’ll assume you replaced a urine glass with one filled with apple juice between shots
I remember the first time I saw an episode of that show. I was visiting friends who were watching it. I couldn’t believe they bought into that crap. They had “contestants” (i.e. actors) drink some concoction supposedly made from rotten fish or something like that. They scooped the carcasses out of this big tank and put them in a blender, pulverized it, and poured it into glasses. But in the shot where the actors were supposedly drinking the stuff, whatever they were drinking wasn’t even the same color or consistency as we’d seen in the previous shot. It was clearly not the same substance.
Those shots could’ve been filmed on different days. They could’ve conceivably filmed the shots where they were drinking the goop a day before they filmed the shot of them blending the rotten fish. How they splice it together and narrate it doesn’t make it reality. They’re putting on a play. It’s fakery.
In that same episode they had a “contest” where the beautiful girl is handcuffed to the steering wheel of a shiny sports car suspended off the top of a tall building. The hero had to climb down a rope ladder, free her, and carry her back up to safety before time ran out and the car would crash down to the ground. You can’t actually do that. You can’t risk someone actually getting killed on a stunt like that. Both actors were secured by wires. Plainly visible. The guy didn’t even use his feet while being lowered down the rope ladder and raised back up again after “rescuing” the helpless young maiden. It was a total farce. Then after they had returned to safety, the car was cut loose and it landed between two big oil drums on the ground which exploded in big fireballs. The car didn’t explode, of course. I’m sure it was just an empty shell. Why wouldn’t it be? No, there were pyrotechnics in the two big drums that made a big flash and my friend gasped as if she was actually watching something real. I felt bad for her boyfriend. If that had been my girlfriend I would’ve dumped her right then and there.
They’re putting on a weekly show. They can’t risk injury to their actors nor running out of people willing to consume disgusting and potentially dangerous substances. to appear on their show every week. No, the burden of proof is on them. If I didn’t see it, it didn’t happen.
Joe, the moon landing stuff is more interesting than your theories about animal semen.

Why even bother with the narrative? I guess bureaucrats need jobs too.
The narrative is powerful. In this same country (Slovakia), a hydra of neo-Nazis and opposition leftists came very close to successfully killing the ratification of a (very boring, pro forma legal framework) Defense Cooperation Agreement with the U.S. this very week. Almost every argument they made was a word for word recitation of Kremlin arguments about who is to blame for Ukraine and who is ratcheting up tensions. Polling showed that its coincided with a massive dip in popular approval of NATO and that 60 percent of the country believes that the U.S. sparked the crisis. These narratives are paper thin but appealing to a certain demographic and so its going to keep getting pumped out.

This is what a Russian Embassy in a European nation that borders Ukraine posted a couple hours ago on its public Facebook page (in Russian).
Quote‼️ More than 130 spontaneous mass graves of civilians who died from Ukrainian aggression were discovered on the territory of the Donetsk People's Republic (DPR). This was stated at a briefing on Friday by the head of #DPR Denis #Pushilin.
💬"Today, only on the territory of the Donetsk People's Republic, more than 130 places of mass and spontaneous burials of victims of Ukrainian aggression have been discovered and uncovered. We are talking about #mass_burials of civilians killed during the operation of the armed forces of #Ukraine on the territory of the DPR: these are Snezhnoye, Debaltseve, Khartsyzsk, Ilovaisk," he said.
Quote📢Head of the #Donetsk_People's_Republic (DPR) Denis #Pushilin said that he does not rule out that #Russia can come to the aid of the Donbass republics if #Ukraine unleashes a full-scale aggression against them, but this decision should be made by #Moscow itself.
‼️"There is a situation on the line of contact - it is heated to the limit. Now we are looking at one of the options: Ukraine goes on the offensive, starts using all the weapons that it had, plus the weapons that were imported into the territory of Ukraine and continue to be imported, allegedly for protection. This is beginning to be used against the civilian population, against the cities and regions of Donbass.<...> I do not rule out that if a full-scale offensive is unleashed, if settlements and the civilian population are destroyed, then Russia can take such steps. But this the decision, if such is made, should be made by Russia itself. But I would not rule it out," he said at a press conference on Friday, when asked under what conditions, in his opinion, Russian troops could enter the DPR .

What isn't considered blood money these days though? Just participating in the Olympics is considered blood money. It's going to be like the world cup in Qatar. Just your mere participation should be blood money. If you're gonna do it why not do it for the most money. Honestly I don't follow free style skiing. So I've just heard of her a few weeks ago when people started bringing this up. So my history of what I think of her is pretty limited.
Zhu Yi is the figure skater.
Modern day China and Germany in 1936 are very comparable. That’s not to say that China will become what Germany did in later years, but it’s a statement of fact that the policies and treatment of Uighurs in today’s China is not by any means better than Jews in mid-1930s Germany and by some measure considerably worse with a bit more sophisticated propaganda. I know it’s not what you want to read and I know Godwin’s law will be invoked but those are the facts.
So yeah, there’s a difference between being some foreign athlete in Berlin in 1936 and voluntarily choosing to put on the Swastika.

I may be the only one who geeks out on atmospherics around diplomatic meetings, but this recent photo of the Macron-Putin meeting is too good not to share. The statue in the photo below was apparently moved into the meeting room shortly before the awkward table summit.
Who is this mustachioed gentleman? It’s Tsar Alexander II. What relevance does Tsar Alexander II have to the meeting? Well, in 1876 he implemented a major step in Russification of Ukraine. This included, among other things, banning public readings or performances in Ukrainian, banning Ukrainian language literature, and removing any Ukrainian language material from schools. His decrees also stated that Ukrainian (which he banned) didn’t exist which makes perfect sense in a Russian context. He had earlier closed Ukrainian Sunday schools.
If you buy into diplomatic symbolism, Putin is telling Macron what he intends to do.

Some very interesting (and surprising) poll results from a handful of European countries regarding their attitudes on Ukraine and their willingness to come to Ukraine's defense. Lots of other charts at the link.
Lol, first of all God bless the Poles. Maybe my favorite nation. Always itching for a fight and even better, itching for a fight they know they will lose. Poles kick all kinds of ass.
Second, this shows a real gap in understanding among European publics of what NATO and the EU are. I’m unsurprised, as it reflects a lot of other data I’m too familiar with. A lot of those Italians who hope NATO does something but their country doesn’t really don’t get that NATO is them.

More warning signs: Lavrov announced Russia “won’t accept” the response the EU gave it in the name of 27 members after Russia sent letters to each of them demanding security guarantees. The EU states decided to allow Borrell to answer for the bloc. Lavrov simply said it wasn’t good enough and demanded 27 different responses from each country. It’s clearly a bid to try and fracture the EU and show it as incompetent— and also clearly a ploy to have something to wave around as evidence that Russia isn’t being respected or dealt with on its terms.

I'm all for her getting the heat... she made the decision. I'm just willing to cut her some slack given her age and probably the romanticism of China from her upbringing.
I think your story perfectly proves she has no fucking idea what life in China is like for the average citizen and she was too young and too ill informed and probably was strongly pressured by tiger mommy to bring great respect and honor to the family blah blah blah.
Kids get exploited for their talent and/or looks every day. Sucks that an American kid is getting that done to her by the Chinese. Maybe she figures it out. Maybe she doesn't. Guess we will see.
What’s insane to me is that Twitter, Facebook, and all these apps are blocked in China. It’s illegal to download them. But Chinese state media and government officials are all on these accounts spewing propaganda 24/7 and they do fuck all about it. It’s unreal to me that these fuckers have blue check marks and yet THEY BAN THESE PLATFORMS.

There’s almost no reason for optimism. Every signal is that Russia wants a fight. Normandy talks yesterday ended with a stalemate as the Kremlin announced it was all Ukraine’s fault and they couldn’t agree on an implementation interpretation. Thr SVR has started cranking out warnings that Ukraine is about to be the aggressor itself. Putin can’t leave these units there forever. POTUS does not tell people to “leave now” on national TV as part of an info operation.

Ok, posting pre-shit I’ve cooked. I got a tip on raw Mangalica loin chops, which are hard to get here. Most of it is imported as sausage or bacon. This is the Cadillac of pork, from a Hungarian curly haired breed that is slaughtered late, raised with care, and produces crazy marbled meat. Take a look at these loin chops, the marbling is on par with what you see in prime beef.
I am thinking a pan sear and some simple sides. Will update.

Line I said in this or maybe the other thread on the Olympics... there's no way a 15 year old (her age when she decided to compete for the Chinese) who grew up in the US and spent a couple weeks a summer in China had any idea of the ramifications of such a decision. So I'm willing to cut her some slack. She also will make a fuck ton more money from them than she would from team USA because she's their little shiny propaganda piece right now.
That being said I think she's learned pretty quickly she can't say fuck all over there and the reality of China is not where she spent her summers. Maybe she cares and feels conflicted. Maybe she's 18 and doesn't give a shit because this Olympics will set her up for life.
I think it will be more telling what she does and says over the next 5 10 20 years with her platform. But with her mom being born in china she probably still has family over there that could disappear if she says anything negative. Like I said a lot of shit for a 15 year old to think about that I guarantee she never did.
I hope she is thinking about it now. A few days after the opening ceremony, Gu fielded questions on Instagram and a user asked “what should people in China who can’t use Instagram do if they want to follow you.” She responded “there’s a VPN for free in the App Store” which prompted an outpouring or protests that VPNs are NOT in China app stores. They also noted that her ability to use the app means she’s getting a special dispensation to use it by the Chinese government. To cap it off, screenshots of the exchange were later pulled from China’s WeiBo by censors.
I think it’s fair to ask her to grapple with this type of thing to include some pretty serious criticism. But as they say, money doesn’t smell, especially when you don’t have to live by the same rules as everyone else.

I would quibble somewhat with @Shady Ray calling the UK a two bit player, as NATOs second most capable military, perhaps most capable intelligence operator, a bigger economy that Russia, and with the real teeth to sanctions that effect the ability do do business in the City of London— the UK can bring a lot to bear. Bottom line is that you can’t ignore a UNSC permanent member that is nuclear armed, in the G7, and that has force projection similar to your own if they are interested— even if you think they don’t have a right to be.
But that’s only if you have a real chance of opening daylight with Washington and that isn’t happening. It’s hard for me to overstate how angry they are over Skripal and Brexit vote meddling. In some ways, they even outrun the United States.
This episode does show (in a bad way) where Russia is on resolving this diplomatically. Ordinarily a good faith partner doesn’t release embarrassing missteps, “gotcha” or not, if there is interest in productive conversations now or ever in the future. It serves no real purpose aside from humiliating your interlocutor.
The cameras in the room for the “translator” mishap are….interesting. These things are seriously stage managed. The usual format is photo at the top, wave to press, enter room and maybe a photo at the beginning, close doors before a word is said. I’d be interested to know if the Brits agreed to video during talks or if that was sprung on them. Either way— any discussion carried out on camera is not one where you want to have a real talk. Getting shit like that on camera and out is just designed to belittle and piss off your counterpart, and the fact is that it happens all the time. Some very good diplomats are in fact notorious for over talking their interpreter and it’s never more than an inside eye roll or joke.
Bottom line, this was a belligerent performance in every sense of the word and that’s not good news for Europe.
Related— Russian SVR announced that nearly all “combat capable” Ukrainian units are near the Line of Contact in Donbas and hinted that THEY might be preparing an offensive. It’s all over the Slavic language press. And I know @immamac thinks it’s far fetched but this is exactly the type of groundwork you lay if you want to invent a justification for your own intervention.

Oh this is Lavrov at peak Lavrov. You have to know what you’re walking into with him. Or any Russian, diplomacy is a contact sport. And for our British friends, a good reminder that the Russians compete with us— they LOATHE the British from even the Great Game era and before. They really love to humiliate them.
This is a good example of what it’s like to sit down with Russians, which is why almost everyone tries to avoid it unless completely necessary. They consider taking a high level meeting with the sole purpose of humiliating their interlocutor to be a diplomatic win. They also are never sitting down to find a win win, it’s always “if we win you lose.” The vast majority of normal countries don’t try to bait ministerial level interlocutors into gotcha moments no matter how bad shit has gotten.
And Truss was just overmatched. Remember that Lavrov has been foreign minister of Russia for sixteen damn years. As in many Western countries, Truss is not a foreign policy expert. Lavrov knows infinitely more on whatever he is taking about. He’s done this more than her. He’s on his turf. If he decides he wants to maul you, he does. They knew very well that Truss’ trip was to show alliance solidarity and secondarily to show strength at home. He decided to it would be fun to throw a wrench in that.
And you’re walking into the Bear’s den. Nerve-wracking enough alone, but the Russians amp it up. Every step along the way is designed to intimidate and throw you off and I wouldn’t be surprised a bit if this involved things like crazy last minute schedule shifts and delays, to even interpretation format shifts. This happens at the working level, too. You’ll go in with something to talk about, after four hours you will walk out exhausted after being brow beaten for a misstep you made on something that wasn’t even on the agenda.
All stuff that a seasoned Russia hand will expect and take in stride (mostly) but overwhelming to the amateur. No one in the world wants to walk into Moscow and deliver a “fuck you” to that man, it’s a pants-shitting experience.

She does invite tons of criticism and I think some of y'all feel a lot stronger about this because she's of Chinese descent. And it's fucking China (fuck them). We shall see. The one option Ukrainians have that Afghans didn’t— they’re white Christians who can literally walk into the EU and the first world and start working somewhere. If this goes off, I’d want nothing more than to see Russia get mauled. That said, what would I do if I was a Ukrainian and a father or a husband? I’d be sorely tempted to say “fuck it, let him have it.” My grandkids will speak perfect Polish/German/Czech, drink good beer, and take holiday in the Canaries and these assholes’ grandkids will be stuck in Kharkiv.
I try to be pretty detached, but I have friends and people I care about deeply in the country. Wars fucking suck. They suck more if you die. I don’t want them to die.
