  1. A friend and I took his apartment fridge down to the Alamo to get into Spike and Mikes free once. Good times.
  2. You people are still here? Go home. /ferrisgif
  3. I have one of their covers for my Mustang. It’s very nice.
  4. “Sure, yeah I taught some Chinese guys. But they were just part of China’s expansive and well known general aviation community. Just some regular guys who wanted to learn about regular stuff like landing on aircraft carriers and fighter tactics. Totally normal $100 hamburger stuff. Nothing to see here.”
  5. I've made it a habit the last year or so to spend at least an hour going very systematically through my parents stuff when I go to visit them. So far I've taken about half a ton of books to Half Price or donated to the local library book sale. I'm going through each room, bookshelf by bookshelf. They have an outbuilding with a bunch of shit in it, and the garage is half full of straight nothings. But those get worked on in the summer, so those are slow going. My Dad has three file cabinets. Last time I was out there I found "grade incentives" where he had taken my report cards from elementary school and written how much he had given me for each "A", "B" etc. Also tons of bank stuff from the 70s and 80s. So I'll start chucking that stuff pretty soon as well. My grandfather had a 16 ga. Mossberg shotgun that belonged to my uncle. When my uncle died, ages ago, it wound up at my parents. My Dad took it to a gunsmith to have it worked on. As is his want, he didn't follow up and it probably sat in the gunsmiths shop for a year, maybe two. The gunsmith died. His wife told my Dad to come get the pieces. He tried to parse out what was his from among hundreds of pieces. Eventually he told me that he never could find the stock. I figured I could have another made. On Saturday I found the stock - lost for probably 10 years at this point - in a junk corner of his office. Anyhow, I'm cleaning all their shit out now a bit at a time so I don't have to do it all at once later.
  6. Permanently fixed rudder. The ship is settling. They measure it very simply. They’ve welded a piece of angle iron to the stern and to the drydock. They mesure the bend to determine movement. It was slightly bent when they welded it. The guide explained that the 88/89 drydock repairs were really effective. There has been almost no rust externally. So they’ve determined the ship is rusting from the inside out. View aft to forward underneath starboard side. There’s a very tiny green dot on a patch just top center of this photo. That’s were a German shell from Cherbourg penetrated the hull but did not explode. The shell currently remains aboard. That crazy Dreadnaught bow. Go check it out and drop them a little money. Every bit helps.
  7. So they’re shutting down tours for August because it’s too damned hot. The Leg gave them $25m to fix some more stuff, so they’re likely in dry dock at least through the end of 2023, perhaps into the spring of 2024. They’re going to resume dry dock tours in September for an indefinite period. So if you want to see the ship, which I highly recommend, book it. Here you can see the measurements of the steel depth on the bow in thousands of an inch. Anything below a third they consider replacing or patching. One of 157 blocks on which the ship rests. Bottom to top it’s oak sheet, concrete block, sand table, oak sheet, oak block. These are the new torpedo blisters. The guide explained that they were not sure if they could maintain buoyancy with the 1912 hulk profile, which some were advocating. It doesn’t need to have the fairing down underneath the hull as it’s never going to be under steam again. Ship bottom with steel plate removed so you can see the state before sandblasting, steel replacement, reframing. Marks for checking the torpedo blister welds.
  8. Had to drop by this shop in Dallas for non classic related items. Maupin Metals. Weirdest GM ad I’ve ever seen:
  9. I’ve seen JDAMs referenced a couple times this week, but nothing about the launch platforms.
  10. That is some pretty shitty bait. We all know that would look like Iraqi Road of Death II: European Boogaloo in about 48 hours, 72 tops. A bunch of Poles wishin' a mother fucker would right about now.
  11. I don't see anyone defeated. Just recognizing the threat for what it is. No one is pulling anything over on anyone. But if you don't think they GQP are a legitimate threat, well, the Jan 6 crew out front shoulda toldja.
  12. The idea that somehow if one just had the interest, all would be revealed by an internet search, is incredibly naive. The right has shown us what they want. They are limiting information availability bit by bit. Just look at the insanity of book bannings across the nation. That's just a start. Soon, as atom heart states, it will be byte by byte. If the Republicans had their way, it wouldn't be that you couldn't teach the realities of slavery, it would be that you had no access to the ability to research it yourself. They talk trash about the Chinese, but they'd love to have their authoritarian information control systems. They're just modern day Brown Shirts who want to control what you see, hear, read and think. Every accusation is a confession example eleventy billion.
  13. This performative bullshit has become very expensive. Meanwhile, less money for education.
  14. But he clearly knows what he's spouting is bullshit. I'm not sure the lady upthread did. She was happy in her ignorance.
  15. Is there a way to see the Russian attitudes thread outside of Twitter?
  16. The makes sense. I was out of the country trying to bang Latinas at the time. I'm going to say it's ok I missed this one.
  17. I feel like I must've missed out on something here.
  18. I'll bet she's less sassy at the moment. Never underestimate how stupid people are, in any arena, but especially about travel abroad. Back in my apartment living days there was a young lady down the hall who I hung out with on occasion. She was very good at selling radio air time. We were drinking one night and she was taking a trip to Thailand and was telling me about all the drugs she was looking forward to taking there. I advised her against it, noting that many asian countries have severe penalties if you're caught with drugs. The radio airtime salesperson then went on for some time, explaining to her lawyer friend how US laws followed US citizens around the world like some sort of magic force field. I tolerated this diatribe because I was just sober enough to appreciate that it was both amusing and also, other reasons. Luckily she didn't wind up getting life in prison or canned or something, but it was definitely because God watches over stupid people and not any of her own doing. /csb
  19. First, I think we did already find out. But he's about to really find out.
  20. Aviation full circle. First, there were the guys watching the troops move. Then the guys dropping grenades from airplanes. Then there were bigger airplanes dropping bigger bombs/grenades, then there were planes just to shoot down all those other planes. Drones watched the troops move, then dropped grenades....well you know the rest.
  21. More like Little Round Top. Why are you bringing his grandson into this?
