  1. I'm relatively new to politics, only starting to pay any attention in the last few years when a psychopath took over. I get that democrats aren't some saints who are going to fix everything and the democratic party apparatus is very poorly maintained garage sale tricycle. But people on here talk like being a Democrat pre-Trump is some Scarlet Letter. "I'm a conservative, I voted for all these Republicans until Trump, but now..." or whatever, like it's some evidence of being sensible and not some bleeding-heart liberal. But were conservatives ever really not overtly racist, environment-destroying, greedy shitheads? Because that's all I've really seen from that party. Keep gays from getting married, sell off public land to the highest bidder, focus entirely on the unborn rather than the born somewhere else, and ensure that black/immigrant voices and votes are minimized. The whole federal spending thing is clearly a joke. I'm not proud to be a Democrat, it's not like they have been routinely ahead of the curve as far as these things are concerned. But I'm sure as shit proud to have never called myself a Republican. This fucking bullshit didn't start 1/20/16.
  2. Member how Washington state was hit hard at the beginning and had that really shitty nursing home situation? And how Trump has attacked Inslee for being incompetent? And how, despite being basically ground zero for Covid in he US, Washington state is solidly in the bottom half of cases and deaths per capita, despite them being the canary in the coal mine for the rest of the god damn country? Jesus christ, it feels like Trump has been president my entire adulthood and I'm 32 fucking years old.
  3. Took the little girl out for a hike on a gravel forest service road specifically so she wouldn't get muddy. Welp...
  4. How long does this fat fuck think he's going to live?
  5. Mango is a holy terror at 3 months. She's going to be a beast before long though. 34 lbs @ 3 months, which looks about 10 pounds more than the average female Dobie weighs at that age. Big brother continues to enjoy the company.
  6. Are India's death numbers today just a backlog? They have been steadily increasing all day and are over 2,000 now.
  7. Diablo, those are male house finches. They use to be a strictly western North American bird but got introduced in NY I think about 50 years ago and spread from there. It is amazing how many new birds you will notice once you start looking up, especially in April/May if you're living in Texas.
  8. Don't worry, he's been destroying wildlife refuges and Indian burial sites in Arizona while people are distracted by the pandemic to put up Wall. As if the country weren't cursed enough as it is.
  9. Donnie is starting to become a bit more tolerant of Mango. And at 8 weeks, she is no longer the limiting factor on runs/walks, the senior citizen is.
  10. Mango the doberman came home on Wednesday. She has not yet made friends with the old man, Donnie, and Ziggy the cat will only come out of hiding when the puppy is definitely asleep. But my wife is now perfectly content with quarantine.
  11. I used to work at North Cypress Medical Center and saw caracaras near the hospital a couple of times. White tailed hawks are generally found farther south, but if you head west of Houston a bit, you can pretty reliably find them. Paul Rushing Park is a good spot. I don't think I've ever seen them perched, always soaring, but I did once watch a pair dive bomb a bald eagle invading their territory out in that area. That was hands down the coolest wildlife encounter I've had around Houston.
  12. They have been expanding north. I've seen a few in the DFW area even, although mostly outside the city itself. In the Houston area, I've seen flyovers as close to the city as 1960 and 290. If you go out to the Katy prairie, particularly Warren Ranch Lake, they are pretty regular. So are bald eagles, and white-tailed hawks, which are one of the coolest looking raptors in Texas. Unfortunately, my photography game is lacking.
  13. I'm a PA and have worked in the OR at multiple hospitals in large cities. Wife is also in CRNA school. At every place I have worked at, the CRNAs do the majority of intubations for the cases they are running. Depending on the facility, the MD may or may not be in the room during induction and intubation, but even when they are there, the CRNA does the intubation 90+% of the time. I would not say most good hospitals have MD-only intubations, based on my experience in many DFW and Houston-area hospitals.
  14. Our boy, Donnie is getting up there in age, at least 10 years old. He's still just about as lively as he has ever been, which is to say not very, but I can see that it's starting to take him more effort to get up and go for walks. My wife got him before I was around and he's been there for her through many moves and multiple rounds of school, so it's going to be horrible when he passes. Hopefully he's got a few years remaining, but in the meantime we put a deposit down on one of these doberman girls to help keep him young.
  15. Denton got crushed today, or testing is finally catching up. 54 new cases, over a 50% increase in total county cases. 31 of these are at the state-funded living facility for the mentally disabled, which is a recipe for disaster.
  16. I work in Denton but live elsewhere, so I basically just drive to the hospital and back home every day. Driving out for lunch since the cafeteria is closing, and it seems like just about everything is still open and a lot of people are out and about, so that's nice.
  17. Denton county going to creep into double digits after having just 2 cases as of this morning.
  18. I've had maybe 2-3 colds in the last decade, so if I start feeling like shit, I'm going to assume I caught it. I work in healthcare, as does my wife, so it seems like a foregone conclusion that we will get it. Bartscott.gif
  19. Heard that we are getting tests here in Denton on Monday. I take that to mean that we have tested 0 people thus far.
  20. Looking to spend a week here in May with the wife. From what I can tell online, it seems like the island has largely recovered from the 2017 hurricanes. I've got an airbnb on the south side of the island in Fish Bay. Any recs on restaurants/bars? I know we will have to drive into Cruz and Coral Bay for that. We also plan on doing some snorkeling. Any tours or specific areas of the island to do that? I'm interested in doing a half-day fishing charter as well, but don't necessarily want to pay the full price for just 2 people. Anyone know anything about trying to book a shared charter with another small group?
  21. Work in Denton and live in Decatur (not voluntarily). Can't wait to see what I will be coming home to this evening, if I'm able to get there.
  22. I discover new people to hate every day now. It's exhausting. I miss the days when I didn't feel the need to pay so much attention to this shit.
  23. I heard that on the radio and was shocked to discover that Georgia had apparently elected an 8th grader. Imagine having days, weeks even, to come up with a 2 minute speech in the House of Reps and dropping that gem. Badass alert!
  24. This is the worst surly thread of all time and we haven't even hired a couple shitty coordinators yet. Can't wait to see this place after we lose by 20 to Utah. It's shaping up to be a great offseason.
