  1. Bump, although a slightly different area. Didn't feel it warranted a new thread. Heading to Santa Monica area for a week in mid-August with the wife and bro/SIL and looking for things to do. We have spent about 16 hours in LA before, enough time to eat at Sugarfish, which was delicious. Our must-do's so far are a day trip out to Channel Islands NP, one of the theme parks and Korea Town. We may also take in a Dodgers game. Other things we would probably be interested in would be hikes (if doable in mid-summer heat), possible day trip to SD, food and booze (particularly Asian food and breweries), cool events that time of year and touristy things that aren't really Hollywood-centric (walk of fame, Rodeo drive, etc.). We are all late 20's/early 30's. Recs?
  2. San Bernard NWR was the first place I traveled out of town to bird. I had no idea what I was doing, but the barred owl I stumbled upon to start the day was pretty unmistakable. Cool shots, I'm hoping migrants are hanging around in good numbers still when I head to the coast next weekend.
  3. It certainly makes her a little less intimidating looking, which is fine. She's got to be pushing 100 lbs, so her ridiculous size provides the "don't fuck around with my people" vibe.
  4. In other doberman self-harm news, Mango broke a couple of toes being a maniac at doggy daycare a couple weeks ago. She just got a new splint and this is the first time I was able to get the cone on. Here is her "You're dead to me" look.
  5. I drove out to San Angelo for the first shot this last weekend as well. Took maybe 10 minutes and was the Moderna vaccine. I felt like I had allergies or a really minor cold the next day. The wife really did not have a good time, but was pretty much back to normal 24ish hours later.
  6. Dobermans are just dachshunds on stilts and mine has the same habit of eating everything and puking it up in the middle of the night, particularly socks or underwear that aren't behind closed doors.
  7. She is just shy of a year old now, and Mango dwarfs Donnie. His legs and snout seem so much shorter than I remember because hers have gotten so absurdly long. Keeping this monster sufficiently exercised during the blizzard was a blast!
  8. Yea, they're alive still. I'm pretty sure there is a substantial population in NYC, but they nest around electric substations which I guess helps keep them warm. I've seen them fly over my house in North Austin since the storm, and even had one come to the feeder during, as you can see in this excellent binocular photo. I had never seen them do that before.
  9. I ended up heading to WilCo and getting the barn owl. Also found a pair of burrowing owls not too far away that a photographer was getting great shots of. Lmk if you want location details. Here is my horrible cell phone to binocs photo of the burrowing
  10. In my 5 years of birding, I've yet to find one, despite seeing 5 other owl species in Texas. It looks like Granger Lake is a reliable place for them though, which I believe is not terribly far from you, Doug. I may have to make a trip out there myself to find them.
  11. So with my water pressure slowly returning, would the recommendation be to continue running a drip in the faucets until temperatures exceed freezing for a while this afternoon?
  12. Water pressure slowly returning in 78752
  13. No water in 78752 as of this morning, but still have power.
  14. Our luck just ran out, power out in 78752 for an hour now. No fireplace, should be a fun night.
  15. Windmill. Google photos just reminded me that we took the old dog there exactly 5 years ago.
  16. Doing some primitive walk-in camping at Colorado Bend Monday-Wednesday. It's my first time camping since my little bro and I spent a couple nights in Lassen almost two years ago. Far too long. We are taking the doberman pup with us as well, so it will be an interesting experience for sure...
  17. I don't know where to put this, but I just moved from one of Texas' many armpits, Decatur, to North Austin, only to find out my house Rep is Republican Michael McCaul. The district stretches from north Austin all the way to what looks like@Huckleberry hood in NW Houston. What. The. Fuck? That's absurd.
  18. Mango and Donnie's bond grows ever stronger... just kidding, she annoys the shit out of him.
  19. Sociopaths very rarely off themselves.
  20. Lol, fox News cuts away as Marjorie starts talking.
  21. This makes me want to rage-text my parents...
  22. Texas is kind of the dividing line between states with massive amounts of public lands out west and those states that are primarily privately owned from Texas to the east. I don't know the numbers, but I would doubt that any state west of Texas has less public land acreage than Texas total, not by percentage, despite our massive size. As a Texan who loves the outdoors, it's pretty fucking depressing. Especially as a large portion of that public land is pine forest in the east of the state, which, while important, is not the greatest place to visit, particularly given the surrounding towns.
  23. I tried not to talk to my fellow Wise county residents any more than necessary during my 16-month sentence to that wasteland, but what summed up the community best was a church sign posted in October that read "The rapture is coming. Get right or get left".
  24. Anahuac is amazing. In addition to the giant flocks of snow geese, there are at least a dozen duck species, many raptors (in my early birding days i saw white-tailed kite, peregrine falcon and probably 10+ northern harriers in a few hours), dozens of waders and plenty of smaller perching birds like vermillion flycatcher. Not to mention otters and gators. I would recommend it to anybody in the Houston or East Texas area, in the winter especially. It's also both walkable and drivable.
