As far as Midland goes, I always found it odd that a school located in a place that was not even remotely settled by Americans during the time of the Civil War would name a school after any U.S. figure of that time period.    A Comanche name would be much more appropriate.

This one may have an ounce of credibility as union soldiers were along the frontier a bit prior to the civil war, and Robert Lee is in an area that was the outer edge at the time,  but they weren't anywhere near what would become Midland, which was deep in Indian Territory.  It still has dick-all to do with the Civil War other than the two founders of the community were confederate vets.   956 already highlighted the reasoning for these naming conventions, I was merely commenting on how extra stupid it becomes when used in a location with zero connection to the confederacy at all, like Midland.

At least Midland and Tyler are very publicly telling everybody how racist they are.

Did Tyler change the name of its high schools back?  I'm pretty sure it didn't since my younger son is a junior at Legacy.  I think I might have heard something?

I mean, when I started this thread about Tyler actually doing something good for once, how was I to predict that Midland's problems would be dumped into the thread and people would just assume the two towns were acting in concert given their proximity (that's a joke).

It's okay.  There's plenty to hate about the racist assholes in Tyler.  There are plenty.  But my guess is that the school board and its newly-elected, Latino president, want to not go through that again in reverse.  I hope I'm right.

You are absolutely correct and I apologize, I should not lump Tyler in with Midland, because while the racists in Tyler fought for it, much like the Confederacy, they were a lost cause.

Well, they fought against the name change and lost, but your point is correct and the historical analogy is delicious.

Also, I should correct my statement above that the School Board president is Latino.  Licea defeated the previous school board president, who had been on the board for the past ten years in a contested election.  Another board member, the only one who voted against the name change originally, was defeated in a contested election as well.  She had been on the board for eleven years.
