Being out in a public setting like a restaurant with lots of conversations going on at surrounding table is a beating.

All I hear is a very tinny squawk and all voices are gobbledygook.  Couple that with the tenor and pitch of a woman’s voice, such as my wife’s, and I just sit there like deaf and dumb grandpa and mutter to my soup and occasionally blurt out a response to something that sounds vaguely decipherable that turns about to be nowhere near what the others are conversing about.

Then I go back to my soup.

May I recommend every so often looking up from your soup and loudly saying “Yep - and that’s why she’s my side piece”….And then go back to your soup.

How many of you with tinnitus have hearing aids? I hardly notice it when I am wearing mine.

Same here. All hearing aids will help some with tinnitus, but there are certain brands that will mask it nearly completely. Talk to your doctor for a referral to a specialist and they can help pick out a good type for you.

The last time I stayed at the condo in Brek I saw TV ads for a doctor in Denver that specialized in tinnitus treatment promoting hearing aids to cancel out the frequencies. Never followed up on it and frankly it sounded kinda snake oily.

Talk about hearing aids. Brands. Options. Comfort. I know nothing.

Find a good ear doctor and have them test you. Everyone's hearing loss is a little different and they can go through all the different types that would work for you. If you're in the North Austin/Round Rock area, PM me for a great recommendation. Your insurance should cover most or all of the cost. I have pretty shitty insurance and mine covered a nice pair of mid-quality aides.

The aides I have play white noise in the background. You get used to it pretty quick and it masks the tinnitus sound. Tinnitus is basically your brain coping with the fact that there is no sound of certain frequencies. It's why most people's tinnitus gets worse in quiet areas. The white noise gives your ears some noise to process.

Somewhere on surly is my journey with a severe inner ear disorder that included tinnitus, hearing loss, aural fullness, vertigo, and dizziness. I’ve gone to six different ear doctors and learned that 99% of them have no idea what they are doing. When I called one out on it, he admitted it and had me contact a dr in San Antonio that specializes in these types of issues. She was very good, put me thru five hours of bizarre tests, helped me a bit and the condition is now manageable. I never found an Austin Dr who was good.
