one of these days, someone is going to have to explain to me why Gini is an auto-start in Klopp's midfield. yeah, he is solid at closing down and shielding defenders from the ball but he really offers nothing going forward and the advanced metrics available on understat say as much. the best thing you can say about a Wijnaldum possession is "he didn't turn it over". I hate Shaqiri coming on and then being forced to hug the sideline. we've been so much better offensively when he's been used as a free floating midfielder. Just too many non-factors on the field and we will rue the Mane and Salah misses.

I think Gini is an auto-start when it's not a midfield of Milner/Hendo. Those two are defensive minded and Gini is not great going forward. I would have started K8A or Shaq instead of Milner or Hendo.

I agree he's mostly benign when you pair him with Shaqiri and Fabinho, but I also am disappointed at the lack of K8A because his skillset suggests he's literally just a better version of Gini as a box-to-box midfielder who can win the ball back and then take defenders on and advance the ball. He hasn't been spectacular, but I think his floor on any given day this year is still relatively close to Gini's ceiling.
