It it happened, I wouldn't mind tampering Barion Brown from LSU.

If we wanted to tamper with an LSU receiver we might as well go for their slot receiver, Aaron Anderson.

Random scatter shooting with Bobby, plus some Texas portal talk from Bobby

Saturday

By Bobby Burton

Not sure how many of you watched the OU-Alabama game last night.

The Sooners lost 34-24 after going up 17-0.

Quarterback John Mateer was the focal point of an OU offense that scored just seven points over the final 40 minutes of the game and threw a pick six that completely changed the complexion of the game.

**

So this is what I want to discuss this morning:

If you were the GM of OU, would you bring Mateer back for 2026?

Mateer led the Sooners to a 10-2 regular season record and into the CFP. And he could return to Norman next season.

On the other side of the coin, guys like Sam Leavitt of Arizona State and Brendan Sorsby of Cincinnati are available via the portal.

If you’re the OU general manager, Jim Nagy, what would you do?

I think most Sooners fans would say to bring Mateer back. But others might think the they could do better.

Does anyone think Mateer is the guy to lead the Sooners to a national championship? I don’t think so.

Yet, he’s proven he can help get them to the playoffs.

That’s where we are in college football right now, debating between a returning starter at QB or trying to discern if an upgrade in the portal. And that decision has to be made in the next two weeks.

So what would you do as the OU GM?

**

I am told the move of Josh Hoover of TCU to the portal came with a bit of acrimony. The Horned Frogs, allegedly, did not follow through with finances promised for this season.

It’s a cautionary tale for players who think every school and every coach is the same, and that they all follow through on their promises.

Not a good look for the Horned Frogs or Sonny Dykes IMO to lose what would have been a four-year starter at QB.

**

Meetings between Texas players, coaches and the Longhorn personnel department are ongoing.

The discussions, I am told, could even stretch into early January for many players.

Why?

Well, there are so many of them (60+) and they all deserve the requisite attention.

Plus, there are some situations where you have to wait to see what other players will do.

For example, if any or all of Tre Wisner, Jack Endries and Jelani McDonald decide to return, it could alter the overall revenue share allotment for others on the team.

In other words, this is going to take some time to be fully figured out and there could be more player movement into the week after the Citrus Bowl.

He sucked in the second half of last year and he’s sucked almost all of this year. He’s a pussy and he’s soft. He’ll command 7 figures and then cry on the sidelines with his painted fingernails about how he’s been wronged for not getting targeted after multiple drops in each game. Bama fans are cheering him to the portal.

Other then that though what would your problem be with brining him in? (This is my way of saying everything you said about him is accurate).
But, there’s another plausible path where he gets his head right in a contract year, becomes a top 5 pick and has the greatest season by a WR in Texas football history (not an absurdly high bar). That’s not exactly implausible. The WR room next year has a very decent floor but I don’t believe in its ceiling as presently constituted. I really want a WR 1 badly if we want to be serious about being favorite to win it all next year as opposed to in the mix.

We need 3 OL lineman, a really good RB a decent body at DT, and starters at LB, 1 CB and safety to set the floor of the team as playoff likely, but if you do all that and don’t get a day 1 WR are you laying points in the college semi’s?  I think so.

You’re being grim about some of the needs. Can quality guys not get promoted to the starting lineup anymore? Are we just perpetually fucked unless starters only come from the portal? Why the fuck did we pay for all of this talent at DB if it’s all worthless? Are we writing Barnes off already?

Your premise on Williams is great and all, but have you actually looked at his game by game stats? He was great in that one game last year against Georgia. He had a few other good games. Then the book was out on him - rough him up early and he starts hearing footsteps and bitches out quickly. The guy has attitude issues, drop issues, and he’s meek in size. Can all of that be turned around somewhere else for the low low price of $1M+? I’d rather let someone else figure that out.

If Texas needs a WR1, there are better options already out there and will probably be more heading into the portal on 1/2/26.

You were replying while I was editing to say everything you said originally was correct about Williams and who he has been. It doesn’t have to be him but I want a WR #1 for the reasons I said.
could we make everything we have work in the secondary?  Sure. I just see 26 as national title or bust. If it doesn’t happen next year for sark I don’t think it ever will. The Muschamp hire is awesome. I’m going to trust him completely. If he says we don’t need guys back there I believe him. He’s such a gift taking that job.
If we win it all him and Sark could go on a serious run together. We just can’t leave any powder dry this offseason.

National title or bust is certainly a take. I’m sure it’ll work out. We should be competing for one every year but to say championship this year or we’ll never do it is rough. Injury luck is what you need to have a chance for the title. And we will win one with sark if he stays. Mack had the same issue till he didn’t. With the playoff now and having to play better teams to have a  chance I really think you need to stay healthy to have a chance.

Mack had the same issues until he had Vince Young. You know, just a generational player. Let’s not act like Mack was some coaching guru. His best skills weren’t in-game traits, other than his kicker whispering wizardry.

Holy strawman. Title or bust doesn't mean if we don't do it this year, we'll never do it. It means we are willing to make sacrifices to optimize our chances this year. But if it doesn't work out, we'll still be ready to compete again next year or the one after that.

Was responding to “if sark doesn’t win it this year than he never will. “ of course we’ll win another one and probably multiple with the new landscape- with or without sark

Wasn’t stanning  for Mack brown, but sark will eventually find his Vince young whether it’s arch or dia or the future. We’ll win a championship with or without sark in this new landscape.

Lotzier Brooks is their best receiver now and it’s not even close. I would send Williams to the portal.

I would argue Germie Bernard is their best WR and it's not close. Then I would go Isaiah Horton and then Lotzein Brooks in that order. Williams would be 4th in that rotation. He seems like a crybaby pussy who is bitch made.

IT says Derek Williams may not portal out now that Akina is gone.

Would be massive. When I saw that he was a portal candidate, and then actually put his name in, I was pretty sad. Hopefully now that the cancer is gone in both Akina and Scott, maybe now we can get it together. Sark hiring two coaches that 1) is too old and sucks, and 2) was the worst RB hire I've seen since I was a kid

I hope he stays. I Feel like everyone gave up on him a little too quickly this season after coming off an ACL injury and having Akina coaching him. I think he will be much improved next year.

Everyone, for whatever reason, always gives up on someone because they tore an ACL/MCL, even if they heal. Unless they were a speed demon, there is no reason to panic. He's not a RB or WR.

Relevant note on whether we may pursue a TE, or not:

Jack Endries to Play in Bowl Game

By CJ Vogel

New report from our @Bobby Burton on Coffee & Football this morning:

Texas tight end Jack Endries WILL play in the Citrus Bowl for the Longhorns on December 31st. Following the bowl game, Endries will make a decision regarding his future – NFL or returning to Texas.

Endries met with Steve Sarkisian and the Texas staff on Thursday and opted for this course of action regarding his future.

No ultimate decision regarding his future has been made just yet, that will come in early January.

--- --- ---

Personnel decisions (another article):

- Waiting on a decision from tight end Jack Endries. As of late last night, he was expected to opt to go pro but was struggling some with the decision. He had a meeting with Sark and personnel folks yesterday.

- Tre Wisner’s rep also met with Texas yesterday. There was no final resolution. Wisner still has three options on the table: stay, portal or head to the NFL. Any reporting to the contrary yesterday that a decision had been made was not completely informed.

- Following up on Gerry Hamilton’s reporting, Trevor Goosby is leaning toward a return to Texas. Yet nothing is finalized.

- Texas also continues to speak with Hero Kanu. Kanu could go pro or return to Texas. No decision has been made.

**

As it relates to the portal, I want to remind folks that Jaden Baugh is one of several RBs Texas will/would likely look at should they enter the portal.

The idea that it is Jaden Baugh or bust is inaccurate despite a slurry of reporting that makes it appear otherwise.

@immamac So do you still believe Endries is gone? Would suck, but it would also get Townsend and Winston more quality time, and they both have amazing hands and catching ability.

I’m not saying it’s preordained and can’t happen. It’s just what I believe is most likely to happen one way or another. I think 2026 is a massive pivot point for the program.

I do wonder what caused Sark to gain self-awareness? It's not like he has ever listened to fans or anyone else that isn't his boss. After 5 seasons I just can't see how he came to this conclusion. I don't think he's on the hot seat, but I'm willing to bet CDC probably had a talk with him about what he's willing to do to win. Gut your staff and start over on different position groups? If he keeps Flood it's all for naught. Yes, PK probably needed to be let go, and Akina for sure, but I'm not sure how that will help us score points?

If he truly believes the D is the problem, he's a lost cause. The defense isn't the cause for lacking TD's. If anything they kept our heads above water. PK and Sark has a Kirby problem, but how is that all n PK? Sark could only score twice with a TD and FG, and last I checked that's not on the defense. Regardless, I'm personally happy with the Muschamp hire. I appreciate PK for all he did, even if a lot of it was head scratching he still managed a top 10-15 overall defense in all but 2 seasons, which is not saying a whole lot considering he was only here for 5.
