Congrats to the Vandy Whistlers and their automatic bid.

The bottom four of the SEC better not make the tournament or we need to change the Conference slogan to: It just means nothing. Everybody gets a trophy.

Kentucky will and should get in, there aren’t enough teams behind them that are more deserving

Lame. Finishing 13th should mean something. Something bad I mean.

Ah well. We'll see tomorrow.

They lost to Lipscomb, Wofford, Murray State, Western Kentucky, Xavier.  They were 1-1 versus Louisville.  Miami of Ohio, Northern Kentucky or Wofford is their 2nd best non-conference win.  I’m not sure what you’d call UNK with their 2nd place conference finish in the 3rd worst conference.

Their first scheduled 13 games (two were canceled) were against sub-.500 teams.  I could not tell you which conference any of those teams are in.  Might even be a last place finisher or two in there.  Actually, at least 3 opponents were last in their conference.  Two more were last or last in their division.

They were 4-7 in May.  Swept twice.  Lost their only tourney game when it may have been a must win.

They don’t deserve to get an invite.

Those are all things I already know. Now find a team behind them not projected in the field that is more deserving. Only team right now that might not get in that is projected to get the short end of the stick is Cal Poly (RPI 30) but they play tonight an have a shot to snag the auto bid in the Big West

Just from D1s first 4 out and teams to watch, I’d hav Virginia, Xavier, SELa, UTRGV, and Cal Poly over them.

if you have a losing conference record, you better do something in non-conference.  They were 4 games under then lost their only tourney game.  I view them and Baylor as a toss up.  Baylor didn’t schedule hammered dogshit in the non-conference except for Sam Houston.  But that is understandable given they’ve had 1st round picks and solid teams very recently.

If they get in, you are rewarding terrible non- conference scheduling and allowing them to hide behind the SEC.  They didn’t play 2 of the top 4 teams, went 1-5 against the other two.

What has Virginia done? Virginia dodged 4 of the top 7 teams in the ACC not including themselves then lost day 1 in the ACC tourney to Boston College who finished 28-29. Non conference SOS is worse than Kentucky’s

Cal Poly is in

SELa has a worse non conference SOS than Kentucky. Both them and UTRGV got to host brackets for their conference tournament and neither made it out of their bracket. They are a combined 2-9 in Q1 games.

Xavier is the poster child for gaming the RPI. Hard to compare results against similar opponents in Baseball because the game can be random.

These bubble arguments always come down to the same debate every year. Is it more impressive to go 22-8 in the Southland or 13-17 in the SEC. Would UTRGV and SELa finish better than 13-17 in the SEC? Would Kentucky finish better than 22-8 in the Southland? We will never know.

Does that strength of schedule allow for weekend games versus midweek games?  Does that strength of schedule account differently for a 3-2 loss versus losing via the 10 run rule?

Virginia was 5 games over in conference play.  In their first 7 games, they played 2 tourneys with 4 teams from the top 4 RPI conferences.  They didn’t play FSU cause it was canceled.  Of the top 7, they missed 3, not 4.  One of those was canceled then they played 2 of the top 5 on the road.

Of Kentucky’s first 13 scheduled games, six were against teams that won no more 25 games.  The other 7 had no more than 18 wins.  Those weren’t just poor teams they were from weak conferences.  These were teams that have done absolutely nothing in college baseball.

Virginia is 12 and 3 with two 1 run losses in their last 15.  They won 2 of 3 at Georgia Tech.  They won 2 of 3 at Va Tech.  They swept Miami at home.  All during this span.

Kentucky is 6-9.  Swept at MSU and Vandy.  Swept OU.

i do not believe that SELa or UTRGV would do better in the SEC.  I do believe they should be rewarded for their efforts in comparison.  If SEC teams continue to be rewarded for subpar efforts, then these other teams will never compete because the players will always have to upgrade for that chance.  The Southlsnd has done well to only get 1 team.

The SEC is the master at gaming the RPI.  The Big East has figured that out the past few years.  Maybe WVU and KU this year.  It is more advantageous to schedule easy wins than to challenge yourself and risk losing a game.

You can poke holes in all their resume’s, that’s why these teams are on the bubble. You pointed at Kentucky’s non conference SOS as a weakness (which it is) then tried to put teams with worse non conference SOS ahead of them. So what criteria are we using? The one that supports whatever team I want in? Kentucky has 8 Q1 wins UTRGV, SELa, and Virginia have 7 combined between the 3 of them and only UTRGV has a better non conference SOS.

You can go deep into the weeds on these arguments down to any detail you would like. Like the fact that sure Kentucky got swept by Vanderbilt in Nashville, but they lost all 3 games by a combined 4 runs. They lost 2 one run games to Auburn. So sure they are 3-9 against the top 4 teams in the RPI but 7 of those losses were by a combined 10 runs.

Im not going to lose an ounce of sleep if Kentucky gets left out of the field but I think it’s disingenuous to say they aren’t deserving, at least relative to the teams they are being compared to. You aren’t facing Kade Anderson, Liam Doyle, and Kyson Witherspoon in the Southland.

I said Virginia dodged 4 of the top 7 because you can’t judge them for a series they did not play. They finished 63rd in the RPI with an 18-17 record against Q1-Q3 opponents. They could’ve swept Florida State or they could’ve gotten swept, we will never know, so they are what they are.

2nd best day of the year tomorrow, second only to opening day of college baseball. We will find out tomorrow.

You and others, I’m sure the committee included, will reference the SOS and RPI.  They are both a big circle jerk.  The quadrants are bullshit.  It’s difficult to buy into beating Mizzou on the road as a Quad 3 win.

UCF is a good example of the shit representing the RPI/SOS.  They are 20-5 in non-conference.  They are 9-21 in the Big 12.  They are 3-0 versus the ACC/SEC.  2-0 versus 40 win Stetson.  Lots of Florida schools in that non-conference schedule.  They didn’t even leave the state until conference.  We cannot say those midweek game outcomes are different because the circumstances are different then ignore it when using a metric to help set the field.  State of Florida champions.  Big 12 second to worst team.

Interesting that you listed those pitchers.  Take LSU.  Three of their 4 best pitchers are newcomers I believe.  One from UC San Diego, one from Wofford, one freshman.  One of their better hitters is from a lesser Utah school.  Thats 3 guys from one bid leagues.  Riojas and Spencer for us from smaller schools.  Some guy named Skenes was from a nothing school.  That Ace Reese was kinda mid at Houston.  There’s a lot of guys out there that can be impactful.  They’re  underappreciated at the smaller schools.

The truth is that if you want something useful it will have to be very elaborate.  Not sure many would have patience for such an endeavor.  You can’t treat baseball similarly to other sports because you don’t run the same team out there every day because of the pitching.  Just using the SEC tourney as an example.  We got Utenns #1 in their 2nd game.  Vandy got their #3 while going with their #2, at worst.  Those are in no way equivalent from a strength of schedule or win probability standpoint yet, to my understanding, the RPI/SOS treat them equally.

As others have mentioned, if you can’t get to .500 in your conference, which should be the most important part of your schedule, then you best win your tournament.

The committee can make some decisions to better the game.  We shall see.

Nah, let's just start our own network that only talks about the longhorns.  We could call it the Long Horn Network.
