Think Elliot has just cultivated a culture where you can be yourself and whatever motivates you is what motivates you.

That may be. But the team sure attracts a ton of players of faith.

It does, but that's not unusual for athletes though.

I would think Elliot just has a very accepting locker room - I have never gotten the vibe that it is basically mandatory, like Baylor, or OU softball.

No way it's mandatory. That's just not how it works.

He's not being literal. He's just saying it's such a huge part of the culture of the team that it's difficult for a non believer to fit in.

I honestly didn't know that OU softball really emphasizes it.

Baylor prays after every match and invites the opponent to join them. Texas has always joined them.

Yeah, contrary to current popular belief, an organization can encourage or at least welcome religion by not endorsing any single brand or flavor of it.

Maybe. I don't think that's entirely realistic, although a nice idea. But this is the volleyball thread, and we're about to enter the tournament.

I just know Texas players speak about their faith more openly in interviews than players for other teams. That's my observation.

Perfect, but I don’t derail very good threads with stupid-ass shit. I post about volleyball in volleyball threads. You’re too goddamn fucking stupid to grasp that.

You're a cunt.

We're talking about the goddamn volleyball team, based on an article about a volleyball player for that team.

And, in case you hadn't noticed, there's no games going on.

Cunt.

Please, Twice, you stupid mother fucker, enlighten me how this has any mother fucking thing to do with 2025 Texas volleyball.

You're too fucking stupid to get it.

But I'll fucking spell it out for you.  Torrey Stafford, a 2025 Texas Volleyball player, in the quoted article, made several allusions to her faith and to a family atmosphere.  Madi Skinner made similar remarks at other times, as have other players.

Two posters that contribute more on this thread than you do commented upon it, as did I.

I'll be honest. I have a rough time with these first two rounds. All the upsets seem immaterial, because they're just blasted out of the next round or at regionals. Obviously I get excited for our matchups, and Penn State is a pretty big name to be slated for the second round matchup. Probably the biggest name school we've ever faced that early. Partly because it doesn't get much bigger than the Nittany Lions.

I bet at least 13 of the 16 hosts of the first two rounds make it to regionals. And at least half of the regional hosts make it to the Final Four. And that's being conservative.

Yes, the volleyball tournament is generally chalky and you will almost never see an unseeded team make the final 4 like you occasionally will in baseball and to a lesser extent basketball. Baseball probably has the most parity, but part of that is due to the variability between a bad team having a batting average of .230 and an elite team having a batting average of .280. Leads to more unpredictable outcomes. Volleyball, football, and tennis have more predictable outcomes based on roster talent.

Yep, in VB, you might get an unseeded team (or a team seeded 5-8) in the regional semifinals. Wouldn't bet too much on them going any further.  Same with WBB - usually the superior talent and coaching beats back any potential upsets of teams outside the top 16 by the Sweet 16.  The most notable I can think of in the last 5-ish years was 10 seed Creighton making the Elite 8 in 2022 and 9 seed Miami making the Elite 8 in 2023.

In VB, an 11 seed won it all (2004) and an unseeded team made the finals (BYU) in 2014.  Been a long time.

I think softball might be the least chalky - there's also an unseeded team or two (or three sometimes) in the WCWS, and one made it all the way to the finals in 2022 (holla).

I'd be curious to see softball vs baseball over 10 yrs or so.  Would bet anything softball is more chalk.

It's really been the past 5 years I think that softball has started showing more parity.  Some teams seeded nationally 8-16 would make the WCWS, but it was really in the last 5 years, starting with JMU in 2021, that you started to get 1-2 (or more) unseeded teams in OKC.

In the umbrella of women's bracket sports, softball is least chalky.  But its way chalkier than NCAA baseball.  Baseball has 5 unseeded champions since 2008
