This didn’t play out as publicly as Tennessee’s spectacular week after firing Butch Jones in 2017, but it may be an even more impressive train wreck

It’s not as deadly as it would have been before the transfer portal. As long as they have a coach in place by the portal window, there is enough talent on the roster that with enough NIL money they could be ok next year.

They have an unbelievably soft schedule next year. USC, Mich, Wash are the only teams they play that are in the top half of the big ten this year. Depending on how those 3 teams are next year, they could feasibly play the entire season without facing a ranked team. OOC is Marshall, Temple, Buffalo.

No matter who they hire they can buy their way through that schedule.

However, the portal door swings both ways.  It would have to be a home run hire to keep the talented guys on the roster.  There are no home run hires left in the bottom of the barrel.

Down to two commits. One has signed.

Two have signed and 1 is only committed. While looking for this information, I saw that Army has 71 commits. What is that about?

There’s no home runs left but you could call up some NFL OC and pull off a double through the gap with that schedule. That’s about as good as they can hope for at this point.

I don’t see any way they don’t end up with a downgrade with their first hire after Franklin, but I thought that was most likely as soon as they fired him.

Even with the probable downgrade in the short term after Franklin, it was time for him to go after the back to back losses as 20 point favorites.

If he had just lost to Ore, osu, and IU, he probably doesn’t get fired and everyone just says “same old James”.

Without a doubt one of the best program builders in the country. Several obvious flaws that showed his peak was 2nd tier in the big ten.

It's 50 this season and it was 49 or so last year. It is unique to the academies in that every student is 'on scholarship' and receives a stipend. Add in the extreme differences in culture/ training obligations and academics, and their washout rate is higher than Big State U.
You'll find Navy and AF in the same situation.

P-State should go after Greenspoint's favorite coach...

He was terrible at WVU, but excellent at Troy, going 31-8 w/ 3 bowl wins.  Not sure what would make you think UNT could do better - they never have before.

He is not a great recruiter and is conservative to an extreme fault. Imagine Jason Garrett if he took a bunch of hallucinogens and watched a 10 minute YouTube video on analytics. UNT could have at least tried to go after a G5 coach with some upside. Hiring Neal Brown is punting on 4th and 1 on the 35 yard line.
