  1. Going to be hard to get around governmental immunity in order to hold the county liable.
  2. Yeah, all that is fair. But speaking to a point Texas Fight seemed to suggest, I don't know that it's fair to say the parents fucked up by sending their kids to camp where it was obvious they'd be sleeping in a flood plain. Even with all that historical data you cite, the parents assumed that the staff at Camp Mystic was equipped to respond to a possible flash flood, and I don't know if that assumption is a parental failure. As I mentioned above, I've never before thought to ask what system Camp Champions has in place to respond to possible flash flooding conditions, and it's not like the chances of that area along Lake LBJ flooding are 0%. Maybe that's naive of me, and I'm sure I'll ask the question before paying the camp fees for next summer if Champions doesn't reach out first. Along those lines, I wonder if riverfront or lakefront camps in the area will take some kind of hit next summer. No matter what assurances camps will provide, I can see some folks look at what happened on July 4 and say "nope."
  3. I expect nothing but hospitality, manners, and sobriety from the fans in Columbus.
  4. Apparently there were a shitload of people of varying intelligence levels that didn't see this coming at all.
  5. Yeah, good point. I didn't move to Texas until 1994 and don't recall hearing about the 1987 flash flood before this weekend. I guess it's a combination of complacency, faded memories, and a "that was a freak weather event" rationale.
  6. Same here. My kids have attended Camp Champions for years, which is on Lake LBJ. They've stayed in cabins that are right at the shore's edge, and I've never before thought that anything bad might happen. And I know that lake is a lot different than the Guadalupe or Llano Rivers, but I'm guessing from now on Camp Champions will publish to any current and prospective parents a detailed disaster response plan, even if the odds of a catastrophic event like this are miniscule. All waterfront camps are going to develop a "we will not let that happen to your child" type of marketing plan. Too many parents won't view what happened at Camp Mystic as a lightening strike.
  7. Yet another futile attempt to persuade people that he has any humanity or empathy.
  8. It'll matter in that a group of wealthy families of deceased campers will lobby the legislature for some reform, and the legislature will pass some performative bill that won't do shit.
  9. Side note: It was marketing genius that Viagra rhymes with Niagara.
  10. I love the Quinn Ewers Being "Quinn" thread.
  11. I'm also skeptical that Carmy is really walking away from it all. I get that he may have lost some love for being a chef, and his pursuit of excellence was a lot about him not dealing with the other shit in his life. But it's like Tom Brady retiring after winning his third Super Bowl, or Michael Jordan retiring after winning his third NBA championship (yeah, I know MJ did just that, but he came back in the middle of his second season away).
  12. And we thank you and your four friends for your service.
  13. All I know is that there were an awful lot of chemtrails over the Hill County last week.
  14. Yeah, it's right there on the sign. But still, when I heard myself tell my wife, "I'm serious, I only know these people from an anonymous website," I understood how that might be weird from her perspective.
  15. I don't know -- I hadn't done a deep dive in the communications that the camp leadership may have received.
  16. It was a great finale, but I shared Syd's "what the fuck" reaction over Carmy walking away from the restaurant. I understand the point that being a chef and chasing the grind of operating Michelin-rated restaurants was Carmy's way of running from everything, and it's going to make for an interesting Season 5 storyline of Carmy looking to do something other than cook. But The Bear is quitting The Bear? S4 didn't have the same magic as S1 and S2, but a lot more cohesion and story development than S3. And some folks might think all the feel-good reconciliation in S4, which is a sharp turn from all of the conflict and "fuck-you" moments in prior seasons, was too schmaltzy or contrived. But I really liked it.
  17. He was really good. Unlike the John Cena cameo from S3 which sucked and felt too forced.
  18. Eh, we all have our weird shit. For example, my wife at her first Surly tailgate: Wife: "Do you know these people?" Me: "Sort of. Not really." Wife: "What's your connection?" Me: "The internet."
  19. I don't believe anything changed about that. You just can't relocate a city like that. Instead, they improved the levee system and other flood control improvements.
  20. Caps on wrongful death damages are a factor. But there will still be lawsuits. Lots of them. And possibly satellite litigation on insurance coverage.
  21. I think lawsuits and rebuild costs (especially if the camp buildings and other improvements were underinsured) are pretty big obstacles to overcome. And remember that they demolished Robb Elementary. I know a mass school shooting is different. But for similar reasons, I think there's going to be too much pain associated with that site to allow for Camp Mystic to ever return. And on a related note, since these "rare" flood events are becoming much more common, I wonder how many parents who send their kids to Texas camps located along a river or lake will reconsider. And for those camps who aren't located in areas as vulnerable, you can bet your ass that their leadership will be preparing detailed disaster response plans and circulate those to parents in the coming years.
  22. I think it’s mainly the aspect of kids, and the innocence of young kids away from home at a summer camp. I don’t think as many of us would be so emotional about this if the victims would have all been adults saying at some riverside RV park.
