A little surprised Greta Gerwig wasn't nominated for Best Director for Little Women but I'm not sure who you push out to make room for her.

Have we had a nominee be in both the Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress before? Surely, there has been but I can't come up with one.

Fairly short list.

best actor is tough this year...Joaquin and Leo both killed it. i'd give the edge to Joaquin since he's never actually won, and he should have for The Master.

best director also tight...i could see Tarantino just getting best screenplay again.

some quality films this year.

No, the movie is about the reporter who was sent to do a puff piece on Mr Rogers. So Hanks being up for Supporting is correct.

I didn’t see it but how is Tom Hanks in the supporting category for Mister Rogers?  Isn’t the whole movie about him meaning it would be best actor category?

Matthew Rhys' character is the main character.

Weird how some of that gets done. How was Jamie Foxx's character in COLLATERAL considered for "Best Supporting" -- he had more screen time than Cruise, IIRC.

Is Brad Pitt really "Supporting" in HOLLYWOOD? I really need to see this movie this week.

OSCAR SO WHITE! talk not going away on twitter. Does that sort of stuff have any influence or affect on the Academy or you guys?

In terms of the Mister Rogers movie Tom Hanks is definitely a supporting actor in terms of screen time.

I'd say Pitt is basically co-top billing with Leo in Once Upon a Time based on screen time. It's a fairly substantial role.

It seemed like he had more screen time than Leo. Maybe it was to make sure the two didn't go up against each other. Regardless, I think Leo should win.

Academy voters are 90 percent white, 3/4th male and have an average age in the low 60s.

It has no effect on anyone. People want to bitch just to bitch. I don't care who makes a movie as long as it's good and not Oscar bait bullshit. I didn't hate Green Book because it was made by white dudes. I hated Green Book because it was shitty.

WELL! I actually enjoyed Green Book (but did hate The Shape of Water, like everyone else--or at least everyone else should have-- in my defense).

Adding 1917 to a category by itself between the please win and sure why nots. If it wins I'm EXTREMELY ok with it. It is a technical marvel of a film. The characters are kind of ancillary to the visual spectacle of it all, but I'm a character, writing, plot kind of guy and Parasite and Jojo Rabbit were more up my alley in that regard, but 1917 was an amazing cinematic experience.

Once can enjoy a movie that is shitty or certainly not best picture material.  I think some people on here enjoyed Marriage Story, but no way that flick is best picture material.

This is pretty good.  I might eliminate the "Sure Why Not" category, put Joker in the "Self Indulgent" category and put Marriage Story down with Ford v Ferrari, though.

Been a few years since I thought one movie clearly stood out from the pack.  And Toy Story 3 didn't even win that year.
