  1. In a hot climate, wouldn't you want the return air up high so that the warmer air is the air being conditioned?
  2. PSA - and SIAP - The REI annual sale is going on right now. They have the REI Flash 65 pack at 50% off - basically $100. It seems to get pretty good reviews as a budget-minded pack at $200 - so at $100 seems to be a pretty good deal. Lots of other stuff on sale too of course, but this one caught my eye.. https://www.rei.com/product/893906/rei-co-op-flash-65-pack
  3. Did NCAAFBALLROX make it over? I think his company was http://ranchhandroofing.com/index.html , Can anyone confirm?
  4. Re: James Brown.. He also came in for his first start against OU and got the come from behind victory.
  5. USAA has some good general info which I think is open to the public: https://www.usaa.com/inet/wc/advice-real-estate-homebuying?wa_ref=pub_global_advice_homebuying_main If you are a University Federal member and have good credit, I've found them to be good to work with and tough to beat on rates over the years.
  6. I'm definitely all for Agile methodologies. But there are several Agile development methods. Agile Scrum is one that is widely used , of which I am not a fan. Some good info here, including the 12 principles of agile development. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Agile_software_development
  7. Last I researched them, they all have spotty reliability. For that reason, I recommend buying through Costco because they extend the factory warranty by a year. They also have some deal if you use the Costco credit card they add another 2 years to the warranty: https://www.costco.com/concierge-two-plus-two-warranty.html
  8. I've been in the the habit of drinking alcohol in the evenings (whiskeys, gin, wine, etc.) I'm looking to cut back a bit, and trying to find some substitute drinks that might satisfy the same ritual of sipping on something, without the alcohol. The ideal drink would have a bit of a bite of some sort (spicy or perhaps bitter) to encourage sipping, and not be too unhealthy as far as calories, sodium, etc. Ideas?
  9. I prefer a Kanban or Scumban model to Scrum. Running fixed-length sprints to me is arbitrary and wasteful and rarely in my experience works. Some reasons I don't like sprints: What if I'm coming up to the end of the sprint and running behind? Do I cut some corners to get it complete? Do I have the work cross over into the next sprint( now have to document a bunch of extra stuff). What if I finish my tasks earlier than expected in the Sprint. Do I take it easy for a day or two waiting for the Sprint to end? What if you have dedicated testing teams waiting on development to finish something? Are they waiting around til the end of the sprint for something to do? Or are their sprints staggered? That requires extra planning. What if you don't foresee something, or something new comes up that is critical? It interrupts your sprint, or it waits. With Kanban, you simply maintain a list of things to do, prioritize them, and as team members finish a task, they can take the next task off the top of the board and start working on it. The to-do list can be constantly updated and modified. Much more flexible, IMO. If something critical comes up, you can start work on it right away. If you forget something, you can add it in right away. If you have a dev-test pipeline, tasks can move from team to team whenever they are ready to move. If a task is easier than expected, great. Take up the next task when you complete it. If a task is harder, no problem - work on it until it is complete.
  10. My take is prison, at least any significant sentence, should never be about punishment. The only people who should be in prison are those deemed to be a likely risk to society at large. Someone making a mistake, however serious, should be appropriately punished and/or forced to make recompense for their offense; but prison serves no purpose to society except to keep truly dangerous people segregated and controlled. As a means of punishment only it hurts society more than it helps.
  11. You guys notice that Saltines (Original Premium) have changed recently? It's like they're not as crispy and less salty. I had to start buying the Keebler Zesta's instead.
  12. Franklin's video on trimming and seasoning a brisket. The trimming portion was especially helpful to me.
  13. Not sure I follow your meaning. But I've had a lot of brisket that tastes too salty. The 1:1 salt:pepper by weight (1:4 by volume) worked well for me and wasn't too salty. As for seeing the meat through the rub, Franklin does it this way too, so it's not a totally crazy notion.
  14. I've used the above method for hot-n-fast brisket on my UDS twice with very good results. It's posted on about every BBQ forum out there, and seems to produce consistent results for people. It's about as simple as it gets. I recommend ordering some pink butcher paper on Amazon prior as I hear it can be a pain to find.
  15. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amazing_Grace Check that one off the list too..
  16. Is this real life? I feel like i'm taking crazy pills.
  17. I too find Terry Blacks to be too salty. Have had the beef rib and brisket twice and both times.. Meat was cooked well, great smoky flavor, but the overly salty bark almost ruins it for me.
  18. Not looking for new books necessarily, just ones you've discovered as an adult and really enjoyed. Ready Player One - I'm sure everyone knows this one by now. Must read if you were a kid in the 80s. The movie was shite by the way.. The Dog Stars - Peter Heller - post apocalyptic theme. Written by an outdoor magazine writer. It reminded me of a Comac Mcarthy novel, but not as overly wordy and dark. The audio version is great too. If you're a dude who enjoys the outdoors and has ever contemplated survivalist scenarios, I can't imagine you wouldn't appreciate it.
  19. Interesting. Because the WiFi AP they give you w Google fiber is complete shite. I have a Netgear R7000 cause it will switch gigabit speeds.. it's ok, but not super impressed overall. Parental controls don't work as advertised, the 5ghz is janky, and logging is non existent. I'm considering a Ubiquiti system, or maybe flashing to an open source firmware first to try it out. That comes w it's own headaches though..
  20. My employer sells me stock at a discounted price -15% in an ESPP plan. I generally just sell it right away to collect the automatic profit. Anyway, the employer reports the discount as wages on my W-2, so I pay tax on that up front. Well turns out the IRS won't allow the brokerage to report the cost basis on the 1099 adjusted for the taxes already paid, which I didn't know last year.. you have to manually adjust it which is a bit of a PITA to figure out and document. Turns out I was double taxed to the tune of about a grand last year and have to file an amended return. TLDR - if you participate in an ESPP plan, don't go by the 1099 for the cost basis, you are screwing yourself.
  21. Just received from bobinhouston in my email: I didn't change my password and my prior password is still the same (I logged out and back in to be certain). I also have a decently difficult pwd to crack. Posting here assuming the notification was sent in error and so as not to flood Bob's inbox if others had the same thing occur..
  22. Team minivan here. I don't really understand the requirements for something bigger than a sedan if you already have a big SUV and this would be your DD for work. But whatever.. your parameters describe a class of vehicles called crossovers, of which there are a ton. Every mfg has at least one. If your wife will be driving it, I'd opt for something w all the latest safety features.
  23. I would recommend a more general focus CS program than something specifically focusing on information systems or data science or something. You need to learn all the theory and basics to give you a good foundation for the continuous learning you need to do to stay relevant in whatever sub fields there are. I went through the CS program 20 years ago, and very little I learned was on-the-job immediately practical. But all of it gave me the basics to understand, reason, apply logic, problem solving strategies, etc. which is really what you need to be able adapt to an ever changing landscape.
  24. I think Bryan Devendorf is such a subtely great drummer. One of my favorites.
  25. Van Halen 1984 - Reunion Arena, I was 9 or 10.
