  1. I use a Hero4 silver on the standard GoPro Chesty. camera shake has alwaays been a problem. I ran that thing as tight as it will go. some trails are smoother than others. not gato. constant rattle. my cheapskate solution was simply to tie a couple knots in the straps to where there's almost no stretch left. that thing is so tight now, I either keep it in my pack or unbuckle it for sustained climbs or whenever I'm not filming. a friend of mine recently offered to loan me his gimbal. I'll probably take him up on it. but you have me scared that it takes too much work. personally, the gimbals are so smooth, it hardly looks like mountain biking. it's a very visceral thing, for me. I find videos that look like flight are often boring. it's more about reliving the experience. speaking of, rewatching the video from yesterday, I noticed the first major mistake I made on my crash: I forgot to drop the saddle. (the second mistake was fixating on the rock I eventually hit, instead of looking far ahead). can't remember if I shared this one. shorter and less shaky than the other video I made.
  2. sonsabitches who reply to everything with a video. related, but the opposite: I get excessive pleasure when I enter the men's room and the lights come on automatically. usually means I can breath like a normal person, immediately. once in a blue moon, though, there's a camper in there, like your friend.
  3. my buds all went to Brushy for a second day in a row. I had my mind set on this place, weather and fitness be damned. sketchy ride today. damp and snotty in places, hero dirt in others. at least the wood was dry. tweaked my wrist very early in the ride (toward the end of the video). really didn't even notice it when it happened, but the pain ramped up through the whole ride and was a major distraction and confidence killer. riding solo didn't help. skipped out on a couple of goals. trying to get more comfortable on TTFs for my upcoming trip to Bentonville. as usual, a song stuck in my head and I had to make a video with it. Dirtbombs, again. 1080HD.
  4. you need some air, dude. but I think anyone running <25 psi is insane, especially if they're not running procore. I run around 28. I was having some intermittent squirreliness a while back, and I thought it was my shock. turns out my floor pump has gone out of cal. I pump the needle up to around 32 now, and it feels good. I was probably running somewhere south 25, but because the gauge said 28, I had convinced myself that the softness in the squeeze test was just my massively strong hands. everyone's comfort zone is different. but if I was you, I'd try Maxxis Ignitors (w/ EXO casing). I love those. I run them on my hardtail. any rolling resistance you think your saving with those Rekons is cancelled out by the low psi. you've got a full-suspension. no need to roll marshmellows and risk your rims on a root or rock. again. personal taste. and no, the patter of the weep doesn't indicate anything, that I know of. the Nevegals I used to run were solid ooze on the sidewalls. never had a problem there. the knobs would wear out or tear off, or I'd get a big rock puncture in the tread that leaked even after plugging it. that's when I'd replace the tire.
  5. just Stan's weep. not a big deal. just a reminder that hot weather dries it out faster, and need to refresh it. I probably do mine twice during the summer. maybe three tumes, if the heat comes early. at least around here, your knobs will be shredded before you need to worry about the weepage.
  6. no shit, 2x. great job, Braff. that made me look back at my Strava feed from when we did South Boundary Trail, last year, after 3 days of DH at AF, last year. we started at the Osha Pass climb: 10.1%, but only 1.4mi. I was seriously sucking wind. took me 52 minutes. KOM is like 18. anyhoo. what happened was the saw, like this one https://www.lowes.com/pd/Corona-RazorTOOTH-18-in-Pruning-Saw/1000108027 made too quick work on the cut. half-fallen tree I was working on gave way suddenly, and the pressure I had on the saw drove it down, the tip going into my shin, just next to the bone. I'd never seen a fountain of blood like that before, and I didn't take the time to see if it was pulsing before I tied it off with my shirt and started (briskly) hiking out of there. short drive home from the trailhead, stopped off at my neighbor's house where the kids were and asked him to drive me to the ER. fuckin mess. shoes are trash. only 5 stitches, but I've found I have to keep a tightish dressing on it if I'm on my feet for any length of time or it will start flowing again. dunno. probably ok, now. just feel these needly little tears sometimes when I try walking around with it uncovered. PA that stitched me up was hot, though.
  7. off the bike for a couple weeks. trailwork oopsie, the other day. good thing I don't give a shit about paydirt.
  8. man, it is hard (for me) to stay motivated, riding solo; esp in the heat. get someone to ride with, not only for safety, but to push each other. rolled out yesterday around 4:30, a little later than usual, but still a 102+ heat index. it's not a high-mileage ride, but it's steep and intense. lots of ducking and weaving. I'd already been out the lake, snorkeling with the kids, feeding hotdogs to the fish, so I was ready for a nap before we even started. my buddy still wanted to go, so I went. after the first dirt section, I knew I was gonna be ok. but you have to stop occasionally and manage your core temp. funny story, Braff: I fired up the smoker last saturday, so figured it'd be a good time to finally breakdown and do some real maintenance on the bikes, while I was already hot and sweaty. serviced both rear hubs and switched out the chain, cassette, and chainring on the Kona. I had already pressed in a new BB, a couple weeks ago, which didn't cure the creaking, as I'd hoped. bike runs silent, now. anyway, the derailleur mounting bolt was about a half-turn loose, which would atleast explain the funky shifting in the middle of the cassette. oops. oh. +1 on 1x.
  9. "ok, everybody shut up." [normalize breathing] "this's wd, what's up.?" heat rides? every week. carry a platypus of semi-frozen electrolyts, take breaks, all good. hang your jersey in a tree on breaks, and it actually feels cold when you put it back on. gravel (for isu dude) heat (for Texas dudes (three bikes ago...this video makes no sense unless you ride there (as usual)))
  10. bruh: five-seven-five I was told there'd be no maths ok, cool. hook 'em
  11. it was brutal. it was the threat of resorting to cannibalism that incentivised me to keep the pace up. jk what kurdt said. welcome to centex. I love that tech climbing. Twin Oaks would have been boring as a climb; but was fast, fun, and a little hucky 'backwards'. a little adventure on a different trail. good times, good company.
  12. what's to figure out? it's Dallas. the feds are involved. kill shot came from The Grassy Knoll.
  13. the article is accurate. rules on leaders, hook size, etc. you say snag, but I think what you really mean is foul-hook. here's how we hooked up. to me, this is snagging because they're not feeding. you're hooking them in the mouth, but on the outside. maybe they react to the bright color, but not because they're hungry.
  14. just curious, what do salmon running upriver to spawn eat? sure, you're not 'matching the hatch', but you still have to execute. you still have read the water, put the fly on target, at the right depth, then wrestle 20+ lbs of fish to the net with a fly rod. I would absolutely love to get back out west and do the kind of fishing Colt's doing. but this definitely had it's own challenges and aesthetic appeal. but you're right. downtown is a circus. we fished the DSR, which has controlled access to keep it sane. much nicer area down-river, closer to the estuary. downtown DSR
  15. non-Colt is correct. Pulaski, NY, last fall. mostly king salmon, but a few steelhead. guide said my rig was way too light, and he wasn't wrong. smoked my drag on the first day. had to palm it, after that, which made it more fun, esp on the steelies. going back this fall, with a new reel.
  16. so Spider Mtn is pretty cool, but the have a lot of trail still to build. just 4 trails, but they're fun. I think my favorite is the double black. there's really only one scary rock garden on it, but it's the steepest trail out there which levels the playing field for me to keep up with the moto guys I was riding with. they're much better at looking far down the trail and picking the fasted lines into the turns. I'll get there, some day. I too have a lot of work to do. sorry, song's been in my head for a week, but it seemed appropriate.
