  1. Insurance is weird, man. At the micro level, an individual is never going to pay enough in premiums to cover a total loss of their house. So when something like this happens the insurance company takes an enormous loss in the area. Even if every single person in the affected area had been paying $1,400/year for the last 25 years, that's what, 10% of what the company is going to pay out on the macro level? Obviously most of them are fine overall with large annual profits, but $1,400 on a micro level doesn't seem all that crazy.
  2. As much as I would like to agree with this, who the hell really knows? This whole campaign in Ukraine has shown them targeting civilian infrastructure as much, if not more, than military targets. At some point in time, I'd imagine most of their nukes were pointed at military installations around the world, but at least some of them are likely targeted at London, DC, NY, Paris, etc. Gaming this out, if Putin wanted to put himself in the strongest position (not strong, but strongest), as you did in this same post when you said: "The point isn't that we wouldn't leave a few missiles behind (though the goal is that we get 100%). It's that after that initial strike, we have an opportunity to open a line o communication and say, "look--that was a real bad hit. But we didn't hit any of your cities. So everything's fine. But we still have 1,200 warheads; you have just a handful. So let's call a ceasefire and put this thing to bed." If he's able to get off even one of the remaining missiles at a major western city, your idea doesn't go so well, and nukes start flying everywhere. I wouldn't be surprised to learn that a lot more of them have been re-targeted at civilian populations recently.
  3. That’s a good point I’d never considered. Even a small amount of water getting in, and that would’ve been a relatively cheap repair, could become a shitload more expensive if it isn’t cleaned up for weeks. Could be another justification for why some people decide not to evacuate
  4. DeSantis could always ask for someone to bus back all those migrants /No CR
  5. The bolded part really shows that YOU JUST DON'T FUCKING GET IT. If ALL it takes is the threat of using a nuke, then Russia doesn't need to recover economically, politically, OR militarily. Because he wouldn't even need a military. The military is complete shit right now. All he has is the threat of nukes. If the threat alone works entirely by itself, then (and I'll say it again for you) HE WOULDN'T NEED A FUCKING MILITARY TO TAKE WHATEVER THE FUCK HE WANTS! Letting him take the win like that is the only 100% guaranteed way we end up in a direct conflict.
  6. I hate words like this, but in retrospect, the correct answer was a better choice than the two before it. 7. Notorious is a more accurate word than disreputable, if going by the actual definition of the word
  8. Nothing will stop a weim from taking what they want.
  9. Fair point. Depends on how you define escalation. Is anything we do pure, unwarranted escalation? No. We respond to the opponent's escalation by coming up to their level (i.e., they go from 6 to 7, we got from 6 to 7. They go from 7 to 8, we go from 7 to 8. You can't deny that this meets some definition of "escalation of our level of involvement". But I can't argue with your point that we're not escalating unilaterally.
  10. Based on the account it was posted from name "Real Subtitles?", I'm pretty confident it's fake.

  12. It would certainly be tempting! Also, part of me wonders what I would do in that situation. Like, the door or that wall of glass is almost guaranteed to give out at some point right? And a massive swell of water is going to wreak havoc on everything down there and possibly weaken the entire structure. Would it not make some bit of sense to drill a couple big holes in the lower part of that door and let the room fill/equalize at a more gradual pace? Maybe this belongs in the dumb question amnesty thread.
  13. I’ll never understand why anything built on the seashore is ground level. Is it really that cost prohibitive to put absolutely everything on stilts/piers/whatever? I sort of understand if you’re quite a bit inland and the only risk is a direct hit from a near-record-breaking hurricane, but within short walking distance to the beach? That’s just crazy
  14. I’ve gotten additional details. Apparently they were jogging on the trail behind my place and passed a woman who said β€œbe careful, there’s a copperhead right in the middle of the path back there.” They eventually came across the snek a few minutes later and its head was already mostly smashed, but it was still wiggling around. They dropped the big stone and ground it’s head to put it out of its misery. Not sure what would’ve caused the rattling sound they described. Didn’t have this when I first posted, but here’s a picture they took as they approached it.
  15. Couple screenshots from the video

  17. IMG_0320.MOV ID? These broads claimed it was rattling
  18. He straight up said this, but I don't know if he realized it. He said "someone out there has now decided that core economic infrastructure is a viable target." Now THAT is something I could see Putin arranging. "They blew up our pipeline first, now it's totally fair game for us to destroy all that stuff that we're not supposed to under the Geneva Convention (or whatever international law it is that says those things are off limits)."
  19. Ended up hitting up the archives. Did the first 20 and these were my results: Fail - 0 1 star - 0 2 star - 1 3 star - 6 4 star - 6 5-star - 7 So my initial assumption was only half right. No idea how you could ever fail, but not all that hard to be perfect. It's definitely fun though
