  1. Not conducive for the over bettors.
  2. Because the first possession tells the tale every time. Rookie.
  3. It’s only 8:14 now.
  4. Wtf with the fair catch?
  5. You were expecting snow?
  6. You didn’t watch the Michigan-IU game, did you?
  7. I just posted this in the trivial surly thread in response to nnm complaining about the little drummer boy (song). It should probably go here too because…damn.
  8. RIP Zakir Hussain. The baby Jesus should’ve been so lucky. Pa rum pum pum my ass.
  9. No one in this game is going to be bothered by the cold.
  10. Lulz. I took the Over but I’m less optimistic than that.
  11. I’m very excited about this game but I’m curious about how much interest there is around the country and with casual fans. Obviously it’s huge in Indiana. I spent my adolescence in northern Indiana about 30 miles from South Bend so I learned to hate Notre Dame, and Notre Dame fans, at an early age. I’m a Big Ten fan and I’ve been following (and profiting from) the Hoosiers’ history-making journey all season long. It’s complicated because my feelings about ND have softened since former Buckeye Marcus Freeman took over the coaching job. I have a lot of reasons to be interested in the game. Obviously the Fighting Irish have a huge national fanbase. The Hoosiers don’t. My assumption is that this game doesn’t seem all that sexy to the casual fan. But I don’t know. Is this something people are looking forward to or is it something they might watch just because it’s on, otherwise most people just assume that naturally ND will crush IU and they’re waiting to see what happens in the games tomorrow?
  12. I’m happy to report that there has been an evolution (revolution?) in fruit stickers. It’s a game changer. Leave an un-stickied tab on the sticker to allow for easy removal. (Why didn’t anyone think of this sooner?)
  13. Whenever the Republicans have shut down the government, their attempts to blame it on the Democrats have never been successful. I don’t see why this time will be any different.
  14. Oh, Urban’s an opportunist who only goes places where shit is going well, is he? Does that explain why he didn’t take the Texas job? Did you hear Mullen say about UNLV that “we were one game away from making the playoff?” I guess that makes him an “opportunist” too. Time will tell how he fares in Vegas. I wouldn’t hold my breath waiting for him to make the playoff even after they expand it to 16 teams.
  15. Jesus, got lucky there. Don’t know what UNLV was thinking on that last set of downs. Almost squandered some sure points. That FG will probably clinch it, though. If I were a Rebels fan, I wouldn’t be thrilled about Dan Mullen taking over.
  16. RIP Zakir Hussain. https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c2exzm9r043o Grateful Dead family member and musical icon. Best known as a master of the tabla Indian drum. He played with a lot of artists but I was introduced to him by the Dead. (That’s true about a lot of artists.) He passed away at 73 on Sunday but I just heard about it yesterday. I didn’t have time to post about it until today. The dude was amazing and I doubt whether most people know about him nor what a loss his passing is. I say “RIP” because it’s our custom but it’s probably more appropriate to say “Live on” which he will do in my music collection regardless of any eschatological fantasies anyone might hold. I think this was my first exposure, the first track on this CD (which every Deadhead should own): That band was first formed by Hussain in ‘73 (such a great year in musical history) as Tal Vadya Rhythm Band. They changed the name to Diga Rhythm Band in ‘75 when Mickey Hart joined and released the album in ‘76. That’s a relatively accessible track. This goes a little farther. Listen to the whole thing because Zakir really slays in the last 90 seconds or so. I can’t say offhand how many times Mickey worked with Zakir over the years. Mickey released a couple books with companion CDs in the early 90’s. (The first book, Drumming at the Edge of Magic, is excellent. The second, Planet Drum, is more of a museum piece but it’s also great. Both discs that accompanied the books are fine. Mickey and his Planet Drum cohorts also performed some live shows. If you’re a Deadhead then you probably already know the names Airto Moreira and Flora Purim. Here’s a track from the Planet Drum disc with just Airto and Zakir. The Dead (and Bill Graham) turned me on to Miles Davis who turned me on to John McLaughlin. John and Zakir worked together in the band/project Shakti. Buckle up. This is a trip. I’ll bet I’m the only one here who owns this album. Released in ‘87, the same year I saw my first Dead show, McLaughlin is a collaborator. This is the title track authored by Hussain. (The second track is titled Zakir authored by McLaughlin.) Truly a great loss. Thank you, Zakir, with all my heart and soul.
  17. Usually white men.
  18. And they say “Quack quack quack!”
  19. I don’t think that cleared up anything. “Ignore the trolls” is the least understood rule of how-to-internet on this website. Surly trolls are well fed.
  20. Remember Trump’s first term? He would float all kinds of crazy shit that the press would report. “Trump considering…” And the media would fall for it every time. And then a lot of the destructive shit he’d do quietly after 5 o’clock on a Friday with no fanfare. I’m with Sawbonz that Trump isn’t likely to privatize the USPS. I think it’s more of the same kind of bullshit that he floats in order to generate outrage and distract from other destructive bullshit. He’s a fucking troll and the best way to respond to trolls is to ignore them. Unfortunately he’s also about to hold the most powerful office in the world again so we’re forced to pay attention to his bullshit because some of it he’s going to actually do. It fucking sucks that we have to go through this again because our fellow Americans have such short memories. Fortunately Trump is a lazy, incompetent moron and privatizing the USPS would require attention and effort to which he’s disinclined, and it would have negative repercussions with his rural base so he’s not likely to go through with it.I doubt he really cares that much and the Republicans in Congress probably aren’t in to it. But if it grabs a headline, he loves that. All part of that firehose of bullshit he loves to spew in order to desensitize us. He’ll destroy a lot of shit but he’ll talk about destroying even more. And remember, the first thing he wants to do is cut his own taxes further, use the DOJ to attack his enemies, and start deporting brown people. He’ll privatize the USPS as surely as he’ll build a wall and replace Obamacare.
  21. Article I of the what?
  22. He couldn’t handle being silent and listening to the game. If the play-by-play guy wasn’t speaking, he felt it was his job to just keep jabbering. It was painful.
  23. That’s nothing. Ever heard Mack Brown call a game?
