Columbus radio is playing Ewers’ comments from a recent press conference about his time in Columbus. He roomed with Jack Sawyer who was in his recruiting class. A bunch of those guys he came in with are veterans on the Buckeye team now. He said he’s looking forward to seeing them again. I’m sure that’s a complex dynamic because he’d like nothing more than to win the game on the field but but they’re also guys for whom he feels genuine affection who gave him nothing but support both when he was a teammate and when he chose to leave the team.
His story, with leaving high school early and making six figures in Columbus without ever contributing anything meaningful to the team’s success, only to leave the team who made him a millionaire in order to chase more money and immediate playing time in his home state, is unprecedented. And now he has a backup QB who a segment of the fanbase would rather see take his job away from him. There’s a ton of pressure, and opportunity, on the young man’s plate right now.
Obviously I’m hoping his reunion with his former roommate Captain Jack will turn out differently than you hope it does. Let’s just hope this new expanded playoff doesn’t result in any career-ending injuries to the players on these teams from whom we’re demanding more and more sacrifice in order to entertain us.
